Interesting! While I hinted at such a thing above--noting I'd be more likely to see this kind of show over another storytellers--I didn't know or expect it was happening. I wonder who will be in the band, former Beach Boys-affiliated musicians as before, or just other hired musicians a la Jeff Ross from his storytellers shows or the people he's worked with in his solo career.

I wonder who will be in the band, former Beach Boys-affiliated musicians as before, or just other hired musicians a la Jeff Ross from his storytellers shows or the people he's worked with in his solo career. From Al's website "Al Jardine has just announced a very special show called the Al Jardine Family & Friends Tour featuring Carnie and Wendy Wilson of Wilson Phillips plus Matt Jardine. The show will feature the hits of The Beach Boys including “Help Me, Rhonda,” “God Only Knows,” “California Girls,” “I Get Around,” “Good Vibrations” and many more classics. Al will be joined by Carnie and Wendy Wilson (of Wilson Phillips fame) and his son Matt Jardine, who has performed with The Beach Boys for many years and most recently on Brian Wilson’s Greatest Hits Live! Tour and Al’s Endless Summer solo storytelling tour. Matt has received rave reviews from both fans and critics for his stunning lead vocals on songs like “God Only Knows,” “Don't Worry Baby” and “Surf's Up.” Rob Bonfiglio, who is Wilson Phillips’ musical director and performs regularly in Brian Wilson’s band, will be leading the five-member band. The show will also feature hits from Wilson Phillips’ catalogue including “Hold On,” “The Dream is Still Alive,” “You’re In Love,” “Impulsive” and “Release Me.” It’s a family affair not to be missed!"

OK, so Bonfiglio makes sense, being Carnie's husband and a member of BW band. So, a five-member band, with him being one of them (presumably on guitar). I'll be curious to see who fleshes out the roster.

I'll be curious to see who fleshes out the roster. Or is that it, and this will essentially be like the Storytellers shows with extra vocalists? I saw there's a date in Bethesda, MD. That's about a 40 minute drive for me, and I saw Brian in that area five years ago. The prospect of Wilson Phillips songs in the setlist might lessen the chance of hearing some deeper gems that don't make it in the BW sets.

If the five-person "band" is Al, Carnie, Wendy, Matt, and Rob, I would not find that interesting at all--not unless Wendy, Carnie, and Matt do more instrumental heavy lifting than I'm aware their capabilities would allow.

Heh, yeah. And he does play some acoustic guitar: it was audible during the storytellers show and perfectly competent for the (mostly simple) songs he was doing.
I shouldn't shit on the idea of five singers backed by an acoustic guitar or two, or a guitar and keyboard (if Rob does that, too). It could be cool. But I'd strongly prefer if they had a five-piece band (including Rob) that supports the vocalists of Al, Carnie, Wendy, and Matt. That, I'd pay for.

I'm with you, I'd rather see a full band too. At this point, this is probably a show I'm taking a pass on. Simply adding Wendy and Carnie to the vocal mix doesn't move the needle to me, especially if it's basically doing to be the same BB hits that already appeared in Al's Postcard sets. And I can't say that Hold On is a bucket list song for me to hear live.

So does this imply that the long running Brian Wilson solo touring show is nearing the end? I look at footage of recent shows on You Tube, and think "hell yeah, this thing should have ended years ago". But the majority of fans speak of these shows as if they just sat at the feet of a spiritual master, "it was unbelievably great, Brian fucking Wilson and his band that is better than the Beach Boys!" I guess I can't fault them for continuing these tours if that's the reaction they get. And then I look at Brian, sitting behind his piano, looking like he is in physical - and probably emotional - pain. It just doesn't seem right. Hasn't he done enough to earn a long vacation now - for the rest of his life? So I'm all for a healthy and strong sounding Al Jardine to take up the touring mantle. Especially if he comes to my town, and especially if it means I might have a chance at being near Wendy Wilson!

So does this imply that the long running Brian Wilson solo touring show is nearing the end? Probably, but I think this is more a case of Al - for some reason at 80 years old - being motivated to go out and do something on his own, as opposed to being second fiddle to Mike (and other Beach Boys) and Brian Wilson for his entire career. Maybe Al is encouraged by the positive reviews he has been getting on his Storytellers shows and is simply expanding on them. I can hear him telling stories about seeing Carnie and Wendy grow up (literally since birth) and praising them for their accomplishments with Wilson Phillips. And speaking of Wilson Phillips, I'm sure Carnie and Wendy, with the band, will do excellent versions of the Wilson Phillips songs, and most importantly, they will be well-received by the audience. Reading the press release about the upcoming shows, I was surprised to see FIVE Wilson Phillips' songs listed as possibly being performed. I mean, I could see two, three, or maybe four, but...
Bottom line? While I probably will not be attending any of these shows (at least not at this time), I have to applaud Al for doing it. He's not gonna make any money and he's not gonna make anybody forget The Beach Boys, but he's 80 years old and still out there doing it, and at least trying to give the audience a little something special. I don't wanna take any cheap shots at Mike or Brian, but the enthusiasm of Al's performance and a traveling show like this might be refreshing.

I don't think it implies the BW touring life is over: there are BW band shows scheduled for after these F&F shows.
However much people have been saying for at least 15 years that Brian doesn't want to be there, he keeps being there. I think it's a disconnect between how things might look and how they are.

Considering how brief Al's Tour (at least so far) appears to be, I doubt we've seen the last of Brian on the road. And, I'm sure Team Brian will want to take advantage of the Long Promised Road doc.

Not to nitpick, but lonelysummer used the term "nearing the end" (I bolded "nearing"). I believe it was in 2019 when Brian postponed his tour for mental health issues. So, there is a precedent for that, and, as we know, Brian continues to struggle with those issues. Now, recently, I am observing that Brian has been increasingly using wheelchairs, walkers, and assistance from others to get around. No, I'm not predicting that 2022 will be the absolute last year of touring by Brian, but at the same time, I don't think it would surprising if it was. I also don't think it is a reach to suggest, again in addressing lonelysummer's term, that Brian's touring is nearing the end.
