Was the omission of "Do It Again" an oversight? My question would be more, "was the inclusion of The Nearest Faraway Place an oversight?"

There may be fewer songs on this list, but I pretty much at least like almost every song on this list. I think this was harder for me than 1964. In order of how much I love it: 1. “This Whole World” 2. “Break Away” 3. “Forever” 4. “All I Wanna Do” 5. “Time To Get Alone” 6. “I Can Hear Music” 7. “The Nearest Faraway Place” 8. “I Went To Sleep” 9. “Celebrate The News” 10. “Cool, Cool Water” Was the omission of "Do It Again" an oversight? Nope! I appreciate the song in that it was a return to a classic Beach Boys sound, and I do like the song, but I don’t “love” it.

Why don't you...like..."Forever"? It's OK, but musically repetitive. And Brian's caterwauling at the end does it no favors. Musically repetitive? And I like Brian's vocal on the tag. There is a version - maybe one of those vocals-only versions that goes on too long where Brian gets a little out of control - but I considered Brian's vocal a positive, an asset to the song. You didn't hear much from him during that era, so it was nice to know he was still there, still contributing.

I do have to say the “lonely sea” part of “Do It Again” is really wonderful. I think it’s Mike’s very nasal (more than usual) tone, that puts me off at the beginning of the song. It almost sounds like he is parodying himself.

I always thought "Do It Again" was one of the true highlights of the 1967-1973 era. It's definitely one of the hits of that era, and a tune that they've kept in set lists, on greatest hits comps, etc. But to me, being a nostalgic callback to the kind of music of theirs I like the least isn't exactly a positive. I'd take a hundred "Time to Get Alones" or even "I Went to Sleeps" over it. Not to discredit "Do It Again." I do like it. Just not as anything really special. I agree with carllove that the bridge is really nice. I like the background vocals, as I'm always a sucker for "dit dit dits" and the like. But the basic underlying tune? It doesn't really do it for me.

I was just checking Wikipedia. While "Do It Again" reached #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, it also hit #8 on Cash Box, and it was #1 on the U.K and Australia Singles Chart. I didn't know it was a #1 hit in England.
The only two higher charting singles from 1967-1975 were "Heroes And Villains" (#12) and "Darlin'" (#19).
"Do It Again" also appeared on three Beach Boys' live albums - Live In London, Live In Knebworth England, and The 50th Anniversary Tour.

Of course it has also been a staple for Brian Wilson: it was redone for IJWMFTT, Live at the Roxy, and has been in his set lists all along. The Beach Boys also included it on about eight comps, from what I can see scanning those releases.

Wow, some surprises here. I didn't now Nearest Faraway was such a favorite, or Diedre, for that matter.

I actually like “Tears In The Morning” as well. The version without his crying voice would have made my top 10 (It’s much less schmaltzy). I really enjoy Bruce’s contributions in this time frame.

I do, too (not including "Nearest Faraway Place"). His arrangements and productions were really polished. Whenever I think of him joining the group, the word that always comes to mind is "pro." This is a talented musician who knew what he was doing. He was mostly a utility player for the group--play this part, sing that part, cover for so-and-so--but he brought a lot to the table. It's too bad he didn't write more, in my opinion (both in the band and as a solo musician). Almost 60 years mostly with the group and he only has that handful of compositions. (And it's not as if the band was always overloaded with quality material in those years, especially the latter ones.)
