One BBs board didn't even allow the word Beatles to appear as typed: it was replaced by something else, the same way profanity can be changed to other words. (I forget what appeared instead in this case.)
But absolutely, while there was some competition in their minds at times, it's not a real competition, and certainly not a lasting one! These are two great bands. Neither has existed in its classic sense in a very long time. Just enjoy it all!

One more "Mop Tops" reference...
I don't want to get into the whole Mike Love Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame speech, but the one part, the one specific part that bothered me the most was when Mike was bragging about the number of shows The Beach Boys played each year, and he then said "I'd like to see The Mop Tops top that!" How embarrassing. Not the part about bragging about the number of shows performed, but comparing it The Beatles - who hadn't been around for about 17 years! I also found it disrespectful because of the then fairly-recent death of John Lennon. "I'd like to see The Mop Tops top that!" Who the fu-- cares, Mike, except for you, and you looked stupid comparing the two groups, especially in front of that select audience. It's funny that I've noticed that The Beatles rent a lot of headspace, not just in the mind of Mike Love, but in the heads of some BB fans too. I used to see it a lot of previous forums I used to be involved in, where many a positive post about something BB related included some swipe at The Beatles. Like or it not, The Beatles are the Gold Standard. And Mike, they've not been around in over a half century, they cannot hurt you anymore. Wanna beat The Beatles? Top the Anthology doc!! A little amateur psychology here, but I think Mike brings up The Beatles or compares The Beach Boys to The Beatles because it elevates them (The Beach Boys) and him. OK, honestly, there aren't many groups that can compare to The Beatles other than The Beach Boys, but if you want to take one specific category after another and compare them, about the only categories The Beach Boys "win" is longevity and the talent of Brian Wilson.
I also think that Mike thinks that, because it was so long ago, maybe some fans, especially younger ones, aren't aware just how huge The Beatles were (yes, the Gold Standard), so Mike can get away with comparisons.

Wow, that's pretty pathetic.

I guess its possible, but if those younger fans aren't aware of how big The Beatles were, they're likely equally surprised at the crowds The Beach Boys could draw at one time.

Here is a brief article and interview with Mike Love in advance of a show next week at a festival in Idaho. You'll be shocked--shocked, I tell you!--to learn that the Beach Boys were named the #1 band in England in 1966, as told by Love. The man is consistent, you've got to give him that. Really psyched for this week's show in British Columbia!

If you read enough interviews with any of these guys, you begin to see the same stories over and over again. Examples" How many times has Paul told the story about writing "it's getting better all the time" and John chimes in "it can't get no worse?" Or "The movement you need is on your shoulder...by the way, I'll be dropping that line, that's just a dummy lyric...and John says no you won't, that's the best line in the song, I know what it means". Paul is insecure about his status in pop music compared to John Lennon the way Mike is about himself and Brian, and the Beach Boys in general.

I've not had nearly enough coffee to dare press play on that.

I braved the first one, anyway: an interview and "Kokomo."
First, the host says they've been topping the charts for 60s years, which I think is an awfully generous if misleading way to say it... (They've topped the charts, and they've been around for 60 years, but it hasn't exactly been a consistent phenomenon.) More banter. Then the song, on which I have to say Mike isn't sounding good. I always worry when they sound bad in such a controlled environment. It seems more understandable on some outdoor stage, but you'd think the sound would be good enough to have no real excuses at a show like this. It really does seem that Mike has the same sort of inevitable decline, though obviously not to the extent Brian has had.
As for the locash (no caps for them!) song, I didn't bother.

Here is a review of the Beach Boys' Sunday night show at the Greek in LA, as published in LA Weekly. The reviewer is, suffice to say, not a fan of Mike Love (or at least his politics). And I can't disagree that while Stamos being included is fine, bringing out Mark McGrath (and letting him do the Sugar Ray song "Fly"!?) is not a good decision...
But as the title of the review says, "There's Still Much to Love about the Beach Boys."

I do find it kind of annoying how Mike always has to bring in someone like Locash, McGrath, or even Stamos. I thought he sounded fine on Kokomo. I do wonder how many more years he has on stage, though?

I do wonder how many more years he has on stage, though? If it was just for one song, bringing in a Stamos or McGrath or LOCASH wouldn't bother me THAT much (emphasis on THAT). Hey, it's just four minutes, one song, what the heck, go for it. But what bothers me more is Mike's min-set that he's been doing the last couple of years with, I think, three Mike Love solo songs - and long verbal introductions to those songs. The songs aren't that good (compared to Beach Boys' songs he could be playing) and it really brings the show down. You can feel it. I don't think I'm denying Mike the right to perform solo songs or saying that he doesn't deserve it, just that I prefer he not do it.

I think we need to flip the script on LoCash. They are the ones who are bringing Mike and Bruce on as guests, not the other way around.

That part of the show doesn't bother me at all.

I tend to agree. Pisces Brothers in particular was a real momentum killer at M&B shows I attended in 2015 and 2016.
