Hey cut...it...out. Sorry, wrong character. Umm....how rude!! Wrong again? Oh well, I'm not really in the anti Stamos camp, but I never thought I'd actually be relieved that it's him guesting with Mike and Bruce instead of frickin' LOCASH. I'll take a whole double album of Brian Wilson / Sebu songs over that one track with LOCASH.

12 years ago I saw Mike and Bruce in Alhambra California at a street fair and John showed up and the crowd went wild of people in there 30 is I guess at that time that remembered him on a TV show which I must admit I've never seen. I will be at the show at the Greek Theater and I will enjoy John who always brings much love and energy. He does not add much in terms of authenticity except his part on Kokomo and it would have been much better if David had shown up but haven't heard much from David lately. Looks like we're not going to see any real Beach Boys reunions whatsoever.

Here is a brief article and interview with Mike Love in advance of a show next week at a festival in Idaho. You'll be shocked--shocked, I tell you!--to learn that the Beach Boys were named the #1 band in England in 1966, as told by Love. The man is consistent, you've got to give him that.

It's a lot easier to win band of the year when you don't associate yourself with LOCASH who, thankfully, were not invented yet in 1966.

Speaking of, guess who else is performing at that same Idaho festival ... none other than LOCASH.

And then he always compounds it by referring to The Beatles as "The Mop Tops" which is stupid. Mike talks about The Beatles like they're still around and active. Really, he does. He talks about them like they (The Beatles) are actually listening/reading what he is saying, and like there is still some ONGOING competition between the two bands. And, even if The Beatles were still around - and even if Paul and Ringo were currently reading - I'm sure they could care less. I think Mike embarrasses himself by continuing to care as much as he does about a single poll.

I agree it comes off embarrassing. Mike's always struck me as very insecure about his place in music history. Which I why I think he keeps bringing up that he wrote the lyrics to Good Vibrations, that he cowrote their next #1 hit with Kokomo, they topped this poll and that poll, all the same talking points that comes up with every blurb. That said, Mike doesn't do himself a lot of favors with putting down The Beatles or the Wilson Brothers, all the while doing shit with the guy from Sugar Ray and a Bro Country act.

Couldn't agree more. The 1966 poll/award, the trip to India, and "Kokomo" ... enough is enough!
Regarding the poll, I've only ever heard one other person ever continue to reference a magazine poll as if it were important: Ace Frehley has repeatedly mentioned being named top guitarist by readers of some magazine or other in the mid-late '70s, as if it had anything to do with an actual measurement of guitar ability. Apparently he used to talk about it all the time in the late '70s during conflicts with other band members as he fought for a bigger role, and he still mentions it to this day.
It's as bad as the middle-aged man in a small-town VFW bragging about how great a high school football player he was. In fact it's worse, because while that guy may have nothing to actually brag about, these people have had massively successful careers. To keep going back to a few events decade after decade is just embarrassing.

And for a guy who very often complains about the way he's perceived (sometimes rightfully so), he sure is tone deaf on to how to rectify that situation.

One more "Mop Tops" reference...
I don't want to get into the whole Mike Love Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame speech, but the one part, the one specific part that bothered me the most was when Mike was bragging about the number of shows The Beach Boys played each year, and he then said "I'd like to see The Mop Tops top that!" How embarrassing. Not the part about bragging about the number of shows performed, but comparing it The Beatles - who hadn't been around for about 17 years! I also found it disrespectful because of the then fairly-recent death of John Lennon. "I'd like to see The Mop Tops top that!" Who the fu-- cares, Mike, except for you, and you looked stupid comparing the two groups, especially in front of that select audience.

It's funny that I've noticed that The Beatles rent a lot of headspace, not just in the mind of Mike Love, but in the heads of some BB fans too. I used to see it a lot of previous forums I used to be involved in, where many a positive post about something BB related included some swipe at The Beatles. Like or it not, The Beatles are the Gold Standard. And Mike, they've not been around in over a half century, they cannot hurt you anymore. Wanna beat The Beatles? Top the Anthology doc!!
