The writer says Wilson "didn’t sing on every song and mostly on the verses, but when he did sing it was far better than one would expect. While most musicians his age have lost a step vocally, he still sounds like the Brian Wilson you remember, which is no small feat." So it seems either Brian had a really good night, or the reviewer didn't notice when somebody else was handling parts he thought were Brian's. (Sometimes Brian still sounds really good, but "he still sounds like the Brian Wilson you remember?" He hasn't "lost a step vocally?" That seems highly debatable.)
Regardless, great to see another positive review.
When this reviewer says "the Brian Wilson you remember," is he talking about the Brian Wilson heard on recent albums like TWGMTR or NPP (which might be true)? Because there's no way, he can be referring the Brian Wilson of those golden Beach Boys gems of many years ago. Even the biggest Brianista in the world will admit that's not even remotely true. Saying something like that just seems like it's trying to get people up for disappointment. Also, this reviewer says that Brian sang GOK, so maybe Matt just took that lead at one show?

Is the "Randell" in question Randell Kirsch, of the Beach Boys touring band? I assume so, but just wanting to be sure I'm not ignorant of some other relevant Randell in the BBs universe.
Assuming it is, it's actually somewhat surprising the schedules allowed that, considering the time of year it is and the Beach Boys' activity.
Yes, Randell Kirsch, but he's not toured with Mike & Bruce for over six years. He's there because Rob Bonfiglio tested positive for CoVid.

Robert Lamm with a keytar! I thought those went out 30 years ago!

Video clips from the tour are beginning to show up on YouTube. Here is (part of) "Darlin" from June 9, with the Chicago horn section and (as usual) Darian singing lead.

From the same show, here is Matt J singing the lead on "God Only Knows," with Brian ... listening.

And lastly (for now, anyway), an hour's worth of the Phoenix show from June 7.
I just was skipping around a bit and see that (about two and a half minutes in) Brian is basically speaking the bridge of "Surfer Girl," at least in this show. When I last saw him, way back around 2017ish, he was doing that through Pet Sounds but singing everything else relatively normally.

Here is "God Only Knows" from June 11, the Concord, CA, show that had a positive review posted a few days ago. (That's the one in which the reviewer said Brian sounds "like the Brian Wilson you remember.")
This time around, Matt Jardine does not sing lead; Brian does. He sounds like the Brian I remember ... from the PS tours of about five years ago, which unfortunately is not a compliment. The same YouTuber posted a clip from "California Girls," in which Brian misses his cue to begin the song, coming in late.
I don't say any of this to say Brian Wilson needs to retire, or that he's being forced, or anything else. That's none of my business, and something I couldn't possibly know, respectively. I'm just posting it because it's out there to see and hear, and you're all Beach Boys fans like me. (I mean, you're not LIKE ME, thank heavens, for your sakes. But we're all fans, is my point.)

That's pretty rough. When I saw Brian, as recently as 2020, he wasn't great, but he was able to ably handle those vocals.
I can see why they might want to pass the baton to Matt on that one.

Well, I'll say it. That is painful. I know I'll be told it's none of my business, but it's time to stop pushing Brian out there. He looks miserable, sounds awful. If this had happened in 1990, everyone would be blaming the evil Dr. Landy. But Landy is gone, so there couldn't possibly be anyone pushing Brian to do this, right? Doesn't it bother the guys in his band to see him deteriorate like this? My honest opinion is that Brian at 80 doesn't want to tour, doesn't want to record, he just wants to sit back and enjoy his final years quietly. How do I know that? I don't, just my gut feeling.

I take a very middle ground here. It isn't anyone's business to tell Brian what to do, but it's definitely our business to decide how we want to spend our entertainment time and money. There does comes a time when Brian's poor performances make watching and listening unpleasant for fans. Where is that point? It's a different point for different people. I'm sure some people have already gotten off board; others would probably watch him sit there comatose while his band did everything, just to be in the same venue.
The part we simply can't pretend to know is what he thinks or feels about it. We can only say what it looks and sounds like to us, which is not the same thing. He, his family, and his band members have all repeatedly said that while it might not look like it, he likes touring: he likes the routine of it, he likes the company, and he likes positive audience feedback. I will accept that as true.
As a fan of the music, though, it isn't up to me to blindly support what might be more or less his therapy. None of us can make him stop touring if he wants to tour; but he can't make any of us go see him, either. There's an easy solution for each fan whenever s/he chooses to make it.

I agree 110%. As fans, its none of our business whether Brian tours or doesn't tour. The only decision we can make is whether or not we'll attend. And, despite what we might say about a performance, there seem to be enough people who still get plenty of enjoyment out of seeing Brian and his band.

Again, it gets back to some people just wanting the opportunity to worship at the feet of the master. I felt that way about Chuck Berry and Little Richard; but I would have felt ripped off if they didn't deliver a good performance. The other part of it is people who are fans of his band. I don't deny that they do a great job playing those old songs; but I don't feel any connection with them the way I do with Brian and Al. I'm not gonna cough up big bucks to see Brian just sit at the piano, and Al to sing lead on one song in two hours. Mike Love may be an evil @$$hole - at least that's what I've been told for 40 years - but he can still engage an audience, can still sing the songs decently; and his current band is at least as good as Brian's. In a way, I'm kind of thankful that the main men of my other favorite band, the Kinks, have hung it up. Dave never did sound good again after his stroke in 2004; and Ray seems to be retired now. Hasn't toured in 6 or 7 years now.

Some fans want to take any opportunity to see these legendary songs performed by a top band with Brian Wilson there in the flesh, and that's fine.
