Obviously, Smile wasn't released in 1966, but it was mostly written and recorded then. Disc 1 of The Smile Sessions are included in this poll but if you prefer the Smile tracks as heard on Smiley Smile, 20/20, or Surf's Up, you can choose to vote based on those versions. Remember, I excluded (some of) those tracks from those corresponding polls. Hopefully we'll all be able to find 10 tracks to vote for. Voting is open!

This is going to be so difficult! Honestly if we did this exercise with just Pet Sounds it would be difficult.

I voted for "Good Vibrations" and "Welcome" as an A-side and B-side respectively, and five at that time voteless PS tracks together with "IWFTD", "DT(PYHOMS)" and "PS".
Nothing from SMiLE. I have great trouble splitting it up -- sorry!

My obsession with The Beach Boys began with viewing Love and Mercy, and the subsequent purchase and repeated listening to discs 2 and 3 of Good Vibrations: Thirty Years of The Beach Boys. This list is stacked full of All Timers and songs that showcase the mind blowing creativity of Brian Wilson. So how does one choose 10 diamonds from a lot of 33 diamonds? I had to go with, what do I listen to the most, and how much did the song influence my love of the Boys? “Good Vibrations”, “Caroline, No” and “Sloop John B” could easily be considered to be Beach Boys All Timers, but they didn’t make the cut for me. So many great songs that I listen to way more than songs from years before and after 1966 also didn’t make the cut (it hurts to leave off “That’s Not Me”, “I Know There’s An Answer” and “I’m Waiting For The Day”). I just started my list from the top and worked my way down. It was the only way to do it.
1. “God Only Knows” - The most perfect song ever recorded. Lyrics, vocals, melody, instrumentation - I wouldn’t change a thing.
2. “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) - This song makes my toes tingle! I feel this song in my entire being. I love those cellos.
3. “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” - The perfect bridge between the “old” Boys sound and the new.
4. “I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times” - I can totally relate to the lyrics.
5. “Heroes and Villains” - I will take the SMiLE version, but that alternate Cantina version on Good Vibrations: Thirty Years of The Beach Boys, will always be my favorite. Sounded so good in concert last year.
6. “Surf’s Up” - The song is mesmerizing. The most creative, beautiful lyrics I have ever heard. Those vocals - Don’t care if it’s Brian or Carl in the lead, just gorgeous.
7. “Do You Like Worms (Roll Plymouth Rock)” - I know, unexpected for sure, but this is one of the songs I would listen to over and over again when I was first “discovering” the Boys. It’s great for road trips when you are driving by yourself.
8. “Here Today” - Love the way this song is structured. One of my most listened to songs. I can’t get enough.
9. “Cabin Essence” - Just beautiful. Love all of the versions.
10. “Wonderful” - It truly is.

I found this one to be one of the more easier ones. The only real dilemma was ranking #10 (more on that below). I'm going to avoid ranking them strictly by quality/preference for now. It's been done in past threads, it does change over time, and it's not necessary for this exercise (other than limiting it to 10 songs). Here goes:
Kinda in order but not strictly...no:
1. Wouldn't It Be Nice 2. God Only Knows 3. Caroline, No
4. Sloop John B 5. Good Vibrations 6. You Still Believe In Me 7. Surf's Up
8. Cabin Essence 9. Our Prayer 10. I'm Waiting For The Day*
*Tomorrow #10 could be I Know There's An Answer or Do You Like Worms
Yeah, I'm pretty sure about these. There's a gap before the next song.

I have a serious problem. I need to include 8 Pet Sounds tracks and 4 Smile tracks. Okay, "Good Vibrations" and "I Know There's An Answer" lost out. After making my selections today I checked my top 100 from a while back and found my top 10 PS/ Smile tracks there were identical. And the 11th and 12th? "Good Vibrations" and "I Know There's An Answer". That makes me feel better about it. I'm even pretty happy with the ranking. I wasn't sure I'd be able to. 1. Wouldn't It Be Nice 2. I Just Wasn't Made For These Times 3. God Only Knows 4. Heroes and Villains 5. Surf's Up 6. Sloop John B 7. That's Not Me 8. You Still Believe In Me 9. Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder) 10. Our Prayer

My picks, again in order of listing in the poll. I was surprised to find them equally split between PS and Smile-era songs:
Wouldn't It Be Nice You Still Believe in Me Sloop John B God Only Knows Caroline, No Heroes and Villians Wonderful Surf's Up (love this song, prefer Carl's lead version) Vega-Tables (all versions, but especially the Smile one with the kitchen-sink BG vocals) Good Vibrations (single version)

I have a serious problem. I need to include 8 Pet Sounds tracks and 4 Smile tracks. That IS my split, but curiously I think I like Pet Sounds and SMiLE almost equally. Hmmm...

Sorry, but in my world, Smile is not 1966. So I voted for 9 PS songs, plus GV. That was an easy solution to a problem! The PS songs I left out were the two instrumentals, I Know There's An Answer, and Here Today. Not that there's anything wrong with them - the title track is the only one that doesn't mean anything to me. Also, too, I think I like the Smile material the most when I hear the full album.

I think you're misreading lonelysummer. I think he is saying he left out four Pet Sounds songs: the two instrumentals, plus "I Know There's An Answer," plus "Here Today." So he voted for nine total Pet Sounds songs plus GV.

I can’t count 🤣. That makes more sense. There ARE 13 songs on Pet Sounds. Speaking of “Here Today”, does anyone else think that the part of the chorus with the descending horns, sounds like something off of Sgt. Pepper’s?
