In comparing the two yesterday, "Soul Searchin'" almost has a show-stopping quality to it; whereas, "You're Still A Mystery" is much more understated. Man, would I have loved for them to record an entire album worth of that material. These tracks are so good! By the way, I ended up having "You're Still A Mystery" stuck in my head for hours after this discussion yesterday!Doesn't it make you wonder why Brian didn't (re)record it during his more than 25 year solo career?

Well - I missed out on the voting. I am one of the few fans who actually loves Stars and Stripes and who thinks TWGMTR is a bit meh.
1. “Hot Fun In The Summertime” 2. “Pacific Coast Highway” 3. “That’s Why God Made The Radio” 4. “I Can Hear Music” 5. “The Warmth Of The Sun” 6. “409” 7. “ Caroline, No” 8. “Forever” 9. “Don’t Worry Baby” 10. “Long Tall Texan”
There is just something about the Boys voices that makes my toes tingle when I listen to “Hot Fun In The Summertime”. Just wish Mike would have lost those annoying “Yeah’s”. Still - of all the songs from this time frame, that is the one I go back to listen to the most. “Pacific Coast Highway” is just a gorgeous song. Just wish it was longer. I also have to confess to having watched that Nashville Sounds documentary more times than I have listened to Summer In Paradise, so the songs from Stars and Stripes have really grown on me.

Uh, I never really thought much about it. I definitely prefer it to "Saturday Morning in the City", or even "Desert Drive", which were obviously rerecording for GIOMH. But as much I like it, it actually doesn't standout to me as head-and-shoulders above the rest of the Paley material (like "Soul Searchin'" does). So, if he hadn't ever rerecorded or released "Soul Searchin'", I'd be wondering about that for sure. Part of it probably is the long history of Brian sort of abandoning material if it's not finished and released at the time. (Granted he also has a long history of reusing musical bits and reaching back to older material for new projects.) I don't know. I guess in the grand scheme of things I don't think of it as that big of a standout track or a missed opportunity (at least in regards to his solo career - I obviously think it was a huge missed opportunity for the Beach Boys in 1995/6). But this also reminds me, he did revisit it. In fact, I believe the vocal we hear in the Made in California version is from circa 1999. Obviously, now that we're talking about it, yes, I wish he'd have found a home for it.

B.E. Is there anyway you can let me add my votes? I don’t know why I thought I had until today… I'll edit my recap post. No problem! But I can't edit the poll itself.
