We're just over a month away from the start of a new calendar year, and a huge announcement for a 2023 album was made today. www.spin.com/2022/11/metallica-new-album-tour-details/Metallica will release their 12th studio album - 72 Seasons - on April 14, 2023. It's their first studio album since 2016.

A 3:30 single from Metallica? What's the world coming to!?
Personally I always preferred the more elaborate, classically influenced, multipart songs like are on Master of Puppets to the more straight-ahead stuff like this. But it could be a lot worse. And it's good to see them active with new material.

I tend to prefer their longer songs as well, but since their albums have gotten increasingly longer, mixing up short punchy songs like this one with the longer ones should, hopefully, help balance out the album.

And of course it is worth keeping in mind, this is the lead single. So most bands aren't going to opt for a 12-minute epic as an album's first single. (Though this band did release some long singles in their day, including the 7+ minute "One" and the 8+ minute "Master of Puppets"...)

And, even more recently, their lead single for their 2008 album Death Magnetic was The Day That Never Comes, which was just a shade under 8 minutes. But, coming off the horrific misstep that was St. Anger, I think they chose a song that really announced that Metallica were "back" with that one.

Iggy Pop released a new album today, Every Loser. For 75, he's still rocking really hard.
The album was produced by Andrew Watt, who also produced Ozzy Osbourne's last album, but also has worked with people like Lana Del Rey, Morrissey, Miley Cyrus, and Justin Bieber. The core band seems to be Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Guns 'n' Roses bassist Duff McKagan, and Watt, along with appearances on some tracks by the late Taylor Hawkins on drums and Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard.
Here is the first single, released late last year, "Frenzy." The high harmony in the chorus (starts around :43) makes it sound like a Guns 'n' Roses song. Oh, and the lyrics seem like an angry 15-year-old boy wrote them.

Iggy sounds pretty good for a 75 year-old rocker. From the sounds of that first single, I think Iggy's fans might like this new offering.

I have to admit, I'm not actually a real Iggy fan: I like bits and pieces from his career, but am nowhere near a completist. (I think I know and like maybe 8-10 songs?) But I did enjoy a few of the songs off this one, having previewed it a bit this morning. I especially liked the ballad "Morning Show."

I guess Watt has some go to musicians. Duff, Smith, and Hawkins all appeared on Ozzy's album too.

I just saw that the psych-rock/pop band Temples has a new album coming out this spring, produced by Sean Ono Lennon and mixed by Dave Fridmann (classic era Flaming Lips and numerous, various others). Here is the first single. While I've seen the name Temples, I haven't been up to speed on them. Reminds me some of things like MGMT, Tame Impala.
Not necessarily set on buying it, but I'm going to try to remember to give it a full listen when it arrives. I could see myself enjoying this.

This morning I have been listening to the new album by Scottish folk musician (and author) James Yorkston, released with "the Second-Hand Orchestra" (which includes Swedish guitarist/musician Peter Moren of the rock/pop group Peter, Bjorn and John) and, interestingly, Nina Persson, a Swedish singer best known as the vocalist for the pop group The Cardigans, whose "Lovefool" was a big hit in the '90s.
It's a lovely ramshackle bit of elegance, if those words can fit together. Here is a live performance of one of the prettier songs.

I'm glad to learn (albeit about two weeks after the fact) that the Lemon Twigs have a new single, "Corner of My Eye." The very retro ground, one might say twee, have done some really cool things in the past. This is a nice little ballad with some insanely high singing...what a voice.

Billy Squier just teased new music, which would be his 1st in 25 years.

Dolly Parton joked that if she got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, she'd have to release a rock and roll album. Well, it seems she's delivering on that promise (see, rock and roll albums don't have to take 20 years), with a little help from her friends and several fellow RNRHOF members. ultimateclassicrock.com/dolly-parton-rock-star-album/

Smokey Robinson will release on April 28 a new album of nine originals written and produced by Robinson himself, the questionably titled Gasms.
The first single, "If We Don't Have Each Other," was released this week. It's a slinky, understated tune that shows Robinson to be in pretty strong voice. The production is very much stripped down to the essentials to the point that a person could be forgiven for thinking it's a really good demo, featuring bluesy, clean-toned electric guitar, hi-hat, and hand-claps accompanying Robinson's voice (which strays into falsetto a good amount).
