Paul Simon announced a new album--his first in five years or so--titled Seven Psalms, which apparently will be accompanied by a documentary about the making of the piece. Based on the trailer, its origins were in a dream (from January 15, 2019), which started with just the title. Eventually it was this seven-song, 33-minute album apparently about that most serious topic that is fitting for a man his age: God, dis/belief, eternity. The album to be released May 19.

I'm almost through listening to Metallica's new album - 72 seasons - which was released today.
First impression is more like Meh-tallica.
I felt the same way about their last album - 2016's Hardwired - where there are just a lot of very generic riffs, not many memorable tunes.

Pretty cool collaboration between quirky jazz-funk virtuoso bassist Thundercat and psych project Tame Impala, resulting in a funny kind of space-soul thing, "No More Lies." I don't know whether it's a one-off, or part of an intended collaborative album, or just a song that is part of one or the other's upcoming albums.

Smokey Robinson, 83, released his first studio album of originals since 2009, Gasms. Every review mentions the "cringe factor" of the title, especially coming from a man in his 80s; Robinson, for his part, seems to be leaning into it. I've read a few interviews this morning, and he seems eager to talk about his sex drive (as well as his earlier sex life, including an affair with Diana Ross while he was married in the early Motown days). Reviews are mixed. AllMusic gave it 2.5 stars (out of 5); Pitchfork gave it 7.2 (out of 10). I'm listening now, and it's a low-key, smooth bit of bedroom soul. Robinson sings quite well for a man his age. It helps that he doesn't attempt to sing powerfully, to belt anything out. It's all soft, with nuance. www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mmja4KzHJ9O73yxt2wqw2vwutCVCRSaEk

The Lemon Twigs' Everything Harmony was released yesterday. Check out this gorgeous track, "New To Me." And be sure to listen to the part beginning at about 1:30. When the harmonies come in ... ahhh, that's what I want from pop music!

Cool to see discussion of Lemon Twigs and Extreme.
I am seeing the twigs play tomorrow. I saw them way back in 2017 when their first album came out which I quite liked and kind of fresh despite the extensive homage. Their subsequent work I dipped in and out of every now and then over the last few years and found to be okay but perhaps not living up to the promise of the first. Spinning the new album today - I've definitely heard the singles already over the past few months and also found them to be mostly okay but some of these album tracks are perhaps more interesting. I see it has some strong reviews.
I hold some of Extreme's classic era work in the highest regard alongside Beach Boys and Brian Wilson music. Would echo previous comment and also hope for more melody and harmony in the album.
Glad I dropped into this thread because I'll also be checking out the new Paul Simon work that I wasn't aware of. And Zombies. Life is busy these days and I am terrible at making good use of time outside of work and other obligations so my finger is certainly barely on the pulse now with regard to new music.
I love Luther's endless interest, curiosity and capacity for new music consumption. I have always been relatively narrow and obsessive in my tastes but can always count on threads like this to get an appreciation of what music is still out there to be found if you are so inclined.

That's awesome! I'm listening to the Twigs album again right now. I really like it quite a bit. I'd say it's roughly half a great album, which is a pretty damn good ratio. 2. Cool to hear that. As you can see, both KDS and I (whose tastes diverge a lot of the time) agree on Extreme. Super talented, and super catchy band. Not always doing what I wish they'd be doing, but I guess that's true of any eclectic band: some of the detours are ones you'd rather they didn't take. 3. Thank you! I have to admit it comes and goes, but there's nothing like falling in love with some new music. So even if I get into my same old ruts, I hold out hope there's something else really cool around the corner.

Gotta give it to Dolly Parton. She pretty much trolled the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, saying that if they induct her, he'll have to put out a rock album. Welp, she was inducted, and here comes her rock album. ultimateclassicrock.com/dolly-parton-rockstar-album/

Remember when there would be occasional freakouts over things like Britney Spears kissing Madonna at the VMAs, or some perceived excesses of bikini-clad women in videos in the '80s? It's almost hilarious putting that in perspective of modernity. Case in point, Janelle Monae released the first single, "Lipstick Lover" from her upcoming album. (You might know her best for having had Brian Wilson guest on her "Dirty Computer," though I'd say her best work is the fantastic 2010 single "Tightrope," seen here on a Letterman performance.) And, um, it's not safe for work. It's also strange. First, it's far more explicit than you usually see from legitimate stars. This is usually the stuff of desperation (either up-and-comers or aging has-beens). But second, it's weirdly trying to be funny and sexy, and I'd say actually failing at both. She's gorgeous, don't get me wrong, but this video struck me mostly as just stupid. My takeaway is, Monae is way too talented for this nonsense. (Most importantly, it's not even a good song.)

Today, Paul Simon's new song cycle Seven Psalms was released. It is just over half an hour long, split into seven songs--though so strongly does Simon want it listened to in full as a piece that the recordings aren't split into tracks. It's just one long track.
I am on my second listen. I think that while it's not really pop music, and it's not really any other obviously identifiable kind of music either, it's beautiful. I suspect it's the kind of thing that rewards repeated listenings.

Veteran indie rock/power pop band Teenage Fanclub announced a new album and released the first single, "Foreign Land."
As is typical of Teenage Fanclub, it's a relaxed, melodic tune that honestly doesn't jump out and grab me. The question always becomes: will it grow on me, or just fade away as unremarkable?

Spotify is showing a release date of 2021 for this EP (not sure if that's accurate). The other tracks are Fogerty solo songs.

I didn't see anything on Amazon about it.
But, speaking of EPs, I missed this last week. Ghost released an EP of covers called Phantomine, which includes covers of Genesis, Iron Maiden, and released just days before her death, Tina Turner
