As a lyricist, 1965 for everything and then 1967 for Wild Honey.

No one has picked the obvious year.
1988.
Should I explain?

No one has picked the obvious year. 1988. Should I explain? While I suspect we can guess, it's always fun to hear people's thoughts. Edit - I was wondering, is it Mike's? It's certainly something he refers to incessantly. But yet, he also is very fond of those early years with the Beach Boys, maybe up to or through Pet Sounds. So it's hard to say what he'd say if he were being honest.

So it's hard to say what he'd say if he were being honest. I think it you pinned Mike down and he was totally honest, I don't know that he would rank 1988 as his best/favorite year, but I'm pretty sure he would rank the whole "Kokomo" phenomenon at the top. Just thinking out loud, I came up with these "Mike Love Career Highlights" rankings...maybe according to Mike:
1. "Kokomo" - everything about it; you've heard it all
2. Mike's contributions to and the success of "Good Vibrations" 3. The 1966 poll which placed The Beach Boys as the Top Music Group (or whatever) over The Beatles 4. Mike going to India in 1968 and hanging out with The Beatles
Tie: 5A. The "Lake Minnetonka" story when Mike first...realized...that The Beach Boys were big
5B. July 4, 1980 when The Beach Boys played to over 500,000 in front of the Washington Monument

5A. The "Lake Minnetonka" story when Mike first...realized...that The Beach Boys were big By the way, it being local, I have to note how strange it is that Lake Minnetonka features in two relatively notable moments in pop music history: the aforementioned; and in Prince's movie "Purple Rain," when he told costar Apollonia that she had to "purify herself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka" (i.e., undress and jump in). What? That's not a notable moment in pop music history? It was to me when I was a tween and saw it for the first time...

Kap, if you're keeping score, 1965. As much as I love WH (the BBs' best imo), the volume of great songs from 1965 is larger.

Let's move along to our next Beach Boy. Anyone who still wants to chime in on Mike Love, feel free to do so.
If many believe Mike Love's best work came early in the Beach Boys' career, our next Boy didn't even get a lead vocal for several albums, and didn't become a regular at the mic for half a decade. But once he got into that spotlight, the real pop music fans in the world recognized him as one of the best voices in the world. Which do you think is the best year for...

This will be interesting. I expect more diverse responses. At the moment, I’m not sure where I’ll land!

I've narrowed it down to two finalists:
1) 1972 - CATP, Holland sessions, and the 1972 In Concert tracks
2) 1980 - KTSA, Carl Wilson sessions, and Knebworth.
I'm thinking 1972 will win out, but I'm still listening.

I don't know about best years, but in Mike's case I'll vote for 1970 because of "All I Wanna Do" and in Carl's case for 1971 because of "Feel Flows"...

For Carl, I'll go with 1970. His vocals on This Whole World and Our Sweet Love are incredible. I also think It's About Time might be Carl's best lead on a rocker.
I think 1973 is a very close second.

Carl's too good to narrow down to just one year. I can get down to 1970-73, but that's it.

If I could go back to any year in time and see Carl perform live, the year would be 1969. “Darlin’”, “I Can Hear Music”, “Break Away”, and “God Only Knows” are all included in the set lists that year, he still has his beardless baby face and he discovers his own fashion sense. I considered 1971 because of his vocals on “Surf’s Up” and his songwriting and performance contributions on “Long Promised Road” and “Feel Flows”, but it still doesn’t hold a candle to 1969 IMHO. 1969 Carl is my dream Carl.

My vote for Mike Love is also 1965. I prefer him without a beard, hats or strange robe like garb. Somehow the matching clothes worked for him. My favorite vocals would come later (“Aren’t You Glad” and “All I Wanna Do”), but he had such a great number of fine vocals in 1965, his output that year can't be ignored.
