Yes, thank you. It was decidedly different than the usual "best-of" polls.

Yes, thank you. What does it say of me that I enjoy talking/posting about worst/bad songs? Don't answer that!

You're not alone. It's interesting that threads on Pet Sounds can generate crickets. Yet, bring up MIU, KTSA, or SIP?

"All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."
- Leo Tolstoy's famous opening sentence to Anna Karenina.
Along the same lines, it's Dante's The Divine Comedy, it's Inferno that everyone remembers; nobody much cares about Paradisio. I think the reality is that we sometimes run out of ways to say "hey, that's really good: I enjoy that," while we find infinite ways to discuss what we don't like.

Okay, I have to agree the lyrics to It's About Time are a bit pretentious. What elevates the song to a higher level IMO is the break in the middle where the drums and everything drop out, and then the transition to the close - it changes keys in a magical way, and then we finally get to hear Carl rocking out on guitar. I think the end of side one is the perfect spot for it. Side one has several mid-tempo numbers - Slip on Through, This Whole World, Got to Know the Woman, It's About Time; and then side two is mostly slower songs. Works well for me.

I agree totally with your first paragraph. As I posted, I'm not a fan of the song, but the break in the middle and the rocking out on guitar salvages it.
As per the sequencing, what if Side 1 ended with "Cool, Cool Water" and Side 2 with "It's About Time"? You mentioned that Side 1 has several mid-tempo songs and Side 2 has mostly slower songs, so flip-flop "Cool, Cool Water" and "It's About Time". It even works better that way lyrically.

For me, it's not just the lyrics of "It's About Time" that I find problematic. There's something about the arrangement (and parts of the performance) that just isn't to my liking. Thanks to Joshilyn's song analysis video, though, I know that the underlying music isn't the problem. I think the bass figure over the changing chords is very groovy. And I've always loved the breakdown section with that steady bass riff and Mike and Brian's vocal parts. What a breath of fresh air that section is! Then the unappealing aspects come roaring back. I don't like the guitar playing. Particularly as heard at 2:16. And at the same time, Carl's improvisational vocal wailing is mightily unappealing. Culminating in one of his absolute worst vocal moments at 2:27. They really pulled that back in the mix but it still stands out! To his credit, he recovers toward the end. That said, these moments are just that...moments. Carl's lead vocal is entirely fine otherwise. Arrangement-wise, I think the percussion - combined with other elements - might be the main drawback for me. It's expertly played, I just don't care for it stylistically. I can't help but think that I'd like the song much more if Brian had produced it (and the lyrics were at least partially rewritten).
