“Pet Sounds” is tough to rank. While it’s clearly a high quality track, I probably would have voted it off a round or two ago if I were the lone voter (i.e. it probably would have squeezed into my top 10). But, again, I’m not big on instrumentals and I really do like a fair amount of these “worst” tracks.

Instrumentals aren't usually what I'd want from the Beach Boys--and indeed, the ones they actually played on rate very low with me--but when they're actually well played and interesting, I can enjoy them. It's funny I wouldn't want more of them considering how highly I rate their instrumental tracks. But probably unsurprisingly and not unusually, I want those voices.

I'm not sure if I prefer Nearest Faraway Place to Pet Sounds.....but I might. Pet Sounds is the only track from said album that I never listen to on its own. I don't even think it's the best instrumental on that album.
That said, I think it's a good track, but I do wonder how it would fare in a game like this if it were not included on the album which bares its name.

I don’t listen to “Pet Sounds” on its own either, but you could probably say that about a lot of these tracks. And for me, that’s especially true of “Nearest Faraway Place”. I think “Pet Sounds” is far better regardless of who wrote it, produced it, or which album it was released on.

I promise I'm not trying to be contrarian here, but I do sometimes find myself listening to Nearest Faraway Place on it's own. So, considering that, I guess I could probably say I prefer it to PS.

This has me thinking about how I listen to the tracks. I listen to Pet Sounds much more often than 20/20. And I listen to Pet Sounds straight-through; whereas, I tend to skip around and skip over tracks (like “Faraway Place”) on 20/20 depending on my mood.

I think Pet Sounds is great, personally. Honestly it's baffling that anyone might like Nearest Faraway Place more than it. To me they are in different universes.
To me, the latter is a corny pop song, minus vocal, with gaudy muzak flourishes in a vocal's place. Pet Sounds is interesting and textured song on its own.
Well, I like both songs - but “Pet Sounds” is on a whole other level. My second favorite Beach Boys related instrumental after “Mexico”.

I probably listen to “The Nearest Faraway Place” more on it’s own than I do “Pet Sounds”, but it’s because I listen to the album Pet Sounds in its entirety quite often. I tend to skip around on 20/20. I also usually listen to the version on The Beach Boys 1968, which is not even the version we were voting on.

Realistically I don't intentionally listen to either track on its own, ever, unless we're doing a review/ranking exercise here. Otherwise I listen to "Pet Sounds" in context of the album, and I listen to "Nearest Faraway Place" not at all--shuffle accidents notwithstanding.

For anyone in the mood for just the instrumentals - this is a good listen. Great background music for work.

Yeah - other than as a “B” side - none of these “hits” ever charted on their own. But I rather enjoy “Moon Dawg” and “Misirlou”.

If I'm going to listen to BBs instrumentals, I'm looking to the mid-late 60s stuff and not a lot else. (Some of Dennis's more recently released ones are interesting, too, but it's hard to know what they were intended to be--instrumentals or just unfinished.)

Happy New Year, everyone! After a long weekend, round 14 is complete. A Young Man is Gone and And Your Dreams Come True make their exits, with 6 and 5 votes, respectively.
A Young Man is Gone: 6 And Your Dreams Come True: 5 It's About Time: 2 California Saga: Beaks of Eagles: 1 Tears in the Morning: 1 Pet Sounds: 1
We're in the final stretch. We'll now be voting for just ONE song going forward.
- Pet Sounds - It's About Time - Tears in the Morning - California Saga: The Beaks of Eagles
I'm going to vote for Beaks of Eagles. It's a song I rarely listen to unless I'm giving the full Holland album a spin.

“It’s About Time”
Edit: I’ve changed my vote to ”Beaks of Eagles”
