Sportsmanship refers to fair, generous, and appropriate behavior. So, taking advantage of a favorable count seems fair and appropriate to me. Some more examples.
A hard slide into second base to try and break up a double play to keep an inning alive is fair. Taking out a second baseman with the intention of hurting him is not (Albert Belle did this a couple times).
Pitching inside to a good hitter to try to jam him. Good sport. Throwing at a hitter's head because you're made he hit a HR or to try to take him out of the lineup. Poor sport.

Tidbit I learned from our local centenarian legend of a sportswriter Sid Hartman: the Twins' .808 (21-5) home record is the highest in MLB history, just beating out the '32 Yankees. There are five home games to go...

Reds are in the playoffs for the first time since 2013. It feels so satisfying as I remember in 2013 thinking this is going to be it for the playoffs for a few years, but I didn't think it would be this long. I like our chances against the Braves.

Congrats on the Reds making it.
The Orioles flirted with contention around Labor Day, but we've still got a ways to go. It was nice to see some rookies like Ryan Mountcastle, Dean Kremer, Keegan Akin, and Austin Hays produce, but most of our best talent is still on the farm.

I though you guys might've been able to get by the Astros without their trash cans. I have a soft spot for Nelson Cruz for the one great season he gave the Orioles.

Baseball lost a legend...Bob Gibson passed away at the age of 84 from pancreatic cancer. He was one of the fiercest competitors the game has ever known. In addition to being a Hall Of Fame pitcher, Bob Gibson was an excellent basketball player. He played basketball for Creighton University, and after graduation spent one year with the Harlem Globetrotters before joining the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team.

In fact, we didn't score a single run in either game. A shame, because Trevor Bauer threw a gem in game one and had multiple guys on base throughout. Now he'll probably be the first Red to win a Cy Young and play for someone else next year. I'm glad I was in the mountains and missed most of it.

R.I.P. Dick Allen (1942-2020). To me, he will always be Richie Allen, who played third base early in his career and first base later in his career with the Philadelphia Phillies. Richie Allen was my first favorite player in any pro sport. We've all had them. I had his baseball card. I used to imitate his unique swing. I would listen to Phillies' games on the radio every night (back then they were only on TV on Sundays). I actually got to see him play at old Connie Mack Stadium, and he hit a rocket off the left field wall for a triple. I was very young at the time and shocked when Richie received thunderous boos every time he came to the plate. I was too young to understand racism and what Allen was experiencing in Philadelphia - and on his own team - at the time (the mid-1960's). He wore a batting helmet ON THE FIELD because fans would throw things at him. I was devastated when he was traded to the Cardinals. Thanks for all the memories Richie Allen.

As you all know, I'm not really enough of an MLB fan to have many stories, and I actually hadn't even heard of Dick Allen until SJS's post. But here is a little column of anecdotes from a local sportswriter, including his success against the Twins in the early '70s when he hit two inside-the-park homers, as recalled by former pitcher Bert Blyleven.
Thought SJS might like to read it.

Thanks for the link, Kapitan. There are a lot of fascinating stories about Dick Allen. He was a very - VERY - controversial figure in many ways. Michael Tollin, who was involved in the production of the Michael Jordan documentary, The Last Dance, is working on a documentary about Allen. It's a shame Dick Allen passed away now that he's on the verge of making the Hall Of Fame and the documentary on him finally nearing completion.

It was just a matter of time. Now I'm curious when the Kansas City Chiefs will act. I don't hear nearly as much about them.
