Today is opening day! The Reds might actually have a winning record this year, so I'm pretty excited.

My Orioles are in full on rebuild mode. We have a new GM, Mike Elias, who helped the Houston Astros go from perennial 100 game losers to World Series Champs, so hopefully, we see the same here in Baltimore, as its been 36 years since our last championship.
After losing a franchise worst 115 games last season, I think this season will at least be a little more fun to watch with some younger talent.

The Phillies had a nice opening day - a sold out crowd, perfect weather, a strong outing from Aaron Nola, a grand slam by Rhys Hoskins, and Bryce Harper makes his debut. Oh, and the Phils won 10-4 over the Braves.

Twins won 2-0 over Cleveland in the season/home opener. There is a certain amount of interest with a new manager and some new key players, but I have to admit to almost total ignorance about them. (My baseball fandom was basically 1987-1991, which luckily included two World Series championships. But I'm basically a nonfan otherwise.)

Jonathan Schoop should be due for a bounce back year in Minnesota. He'll hit some homeruns, but I think he's allergic to walks.

He's had a total of one season that's worthy of such a contract.

"[Team] will regret that mega deal." Pro sports in a nutshell! Especially in baseball where 100% of the money is guaranteed, and some of these deals are for 10 years plus. And there has yet to be a ten year deal that really worked out. I guess the owners just accept that fact and hope they can win a WS before the player declines and chalk up the back end of the deal as "sunk cost."

Oh, and a recent poll voted Harper the most overrated player in MLB.
This I know. I know who's going to pay for a lot of the contract. THE FANS! Ticket prices, parking, concessions, cable TV, merchandise...

Ditto basketball in most cases. (There are nonguaranteed deals, but they are almost exclusively given to young fringe players. The standard is guaranteed deals.) The owners actually negotiated shorter maximum lengths of contracts to protect themselves from themselves. You'd see guys have half a good season getting signed to a 5- or more year deal for $XX million...
That's where football is great for owners. But awful for players.
The Twins tend not to be big spenders, so we often avoid those issues. On the other hand, we also don't win a lot...

I can't say I've ever heard of a MLB contract that wasn't 100% guaranteed.

I can't say I've ever heard of a MLB contract that wasn't 100% guaranteed. I made the mistake of posting about something (a MLB contract) that I admittedly am not an expert at. So I'll try to cover my butt with this one.
Yes, Bryce Harper's salary is guaranteed. But, the one big surprise with the contract - and Harper intentionally wanted this to show loyalty to the Phillies - is that there is NOT a no-trade clause in the contract. So, in effect, the Phillies could trade him to another team who would/could in effect assume the rest/part of the remaining contract. And the Phillies would be off the hook. So, yes, Bryce's money is guaranteed, but not necessarily from the Phillies. That's kinda what I meant. And who knows, in 8,9, or 10 years, Harper's salary might not be considered so outrageous and the Phillies could unload it/him with no problems.

It depends on whether or not the contract is front loaded or back loaded. A lot of contracts of that length tend to be back loaded, as was the one the Angels gave to Pujols. in those cases, the player are pretty much rendered untradeable. Considering how long it took for Manny Machado and Harper to get signed, I thought the owners were wising up a little bit with these deals.

Mike Trout's new contract with the Angels makes Harper's contract look smalltime.

Mike Trout's new contract with the Angels makes Harper's contract look smalltime. He'll probably be traded once the Angeks realize they can't build a team around him.
