So glad baseball is back, but sad I'm going to miss Opening Day for a third year in a row when I had tickets or planned to get tickets.

I haven't been to an Opener since 2010. I'd really like to do that again one of these days.

The 16-24 Orioles have actually been fun to watch this season. There have been some peaks and valleys, like winning 8 of 12, then losing six straight. But, they don't look like doormats.
And this morning, they announced the #1 overall draft big from 2019, and the highest rated prospect in baseball, Adley Rutschman is being called up and will make his MLB debut tonight.

I just had to comment on a meme I just saw, which is a similar to one I've been seeing for years, about baseball.
It says, and I'm paraphrasing here: Baseball isn't learned at a glance, it takes years of immersing yourself in the game to fully understand it.
This is in line with an attitude that seems to be held by a lot of baseball fans that you somehow need to have a genius level intelligence to understand the game.
As somebody who has been a fan of the game for over 30 years, I call bullshit. Baseball is not that complicated. And, just because you like baseball, doesn't make you special.
A while ago, I referenced fans called "Baseball-istas" and this is exactly the kind of attitude that they have, that they're somehow above fans of football, basketball, or hockey. You're not special, get over yourselves. It's a frickin' game. It's played by kids as young as six or seven. It's not rocket science.
Mini rant over. Tonight, the Orioles for the very first time will host the Cleveland Guardians. I really don't watch any non Orioles baseball anymore, so this will be my first exposure to the Guardians. It's going to take some getting used to.

I remember hearing about that back in 2017-2018. Hopefully it all gets worked out. You guys have some promising young players and it would be a shame to have them go to waste be money is tied up because of infighting or something along those lines.

You guys have some promising young players and it would be a shame to have them go to waste be money is tied up because of infighting or something along those lines. I really wanted to give the Angelos sons the benefit of the doubt. Peter Angelos did a pretty terrible job running the team during his tenure. But, since ownership transferred to the sons, it looked like things were moving in the right direction. They finally started investing in the international market. And, after being neglected for the better part of the last three decades, seemed to sure up the minor league and development system. I fully expected that, once more of the prospects started to come up, that the team would spend more. I still think about the stuff about relocation isn't really anything to worry about. The Maryland Stadium Authority were just allocated $1.2B to split between the Orioles and the Baltimore Ravens for renovations to their respective stadiums. After what happened to the Baltimore Colts, I do think that the State of Maryland and the City of Baltimore will do everything possible to ensure that the Orioles remain in Baltimore.

The Orioles played their 81st game of the season yesterday, reaching the halfway point in their schedule.
After a walkoff win against the Rangers, the Orioles find themselves at 37-44, which has them on a pace to win 74 games which would be a huge improvement over their 52-110 season last year. June was also the Orioles' first winning month in five years.
Things are definitely looking a bit sunnier in Baltimore this summer (even with the resent ownership drama).

The MLB All Star Game was last night. It used to be one of my favorite nights of the summer. Seeing all the stars in their different uniforms on one field. But, I think Interleague play took a lot of intrigue away. And now, all the players wear the same uniform, so the optical beauty is gone too. I think its been five years now since I've watched an All Star Game. I kinda wish I still had the same interest I'm quoting myself here, as I was about to post something very similar, but remembered that I might've done so prior. The MLB All Star Game is tonight. I'll be watching Jimmy Buffett, and will miss by 7th straight All Star Game. Speaking of which, last night was the annual Home Run Derby. I used to love this event, but MLB took a fun event and turned it into a bloated farce years ago. I honestly forgot it was even on until scrolling through my Guide around 9pm last night before settling on a Frasier rerun. I attended the 1993 HR Derby in Baltimore. Back then, it was only one round, but Juan Gonzalez and Ken Griffey Jr finished in a tie, so it had two additional rounds. I think that got the wheels going over at the MLB offices. Even with the playoff rounds, the 1993 Derby took less than an hour. It wasn't even broadcast live back then. ESPN filmed it, and broadcast it later that night in a half hour broadcast. The HR Derby now is about a three hour event. I think a half hour broadcast was perfect for a skills contest like a Home Run Derby.

I don't really follow the Twins or baseball in general, but I will note this trade since it involves Baltimore, too:
"the Orioles traded closer Jorge Lopez to the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday. The Orioles received four minor league pitchers: left-hander Cade Povich, right-handed reliever Yennier Cano, right-handed reliever Juan Nunez and complex left-hander Juan Rojas."

Lopez was a pretty nice story this season, transitioning from a pretty mediocre starting pitcher to a closer who was the Orioles' lone All Star rep this season. Despite a surprising run which sees the Orioles at 52-51 currently, the Orioles are still (thankfully IMO) staying the course with their rebuild, trading their longest tenured player Trey Mancini last night to Houston for pitching prospects, now trading their lone 2022 AS for more pitching. I actually like both of these moves because I do not see the 2022 team contending, but somewhat predictably, fans here are actually like GM Mike Elias stole their puppy.

The Reds also sent a pitcher to the Twins, Tyler Mahle. It'll be interesting to see how he performs, at home he was pretty mediocre, but on the road he looked like a top of the rotation starter. Seems like we got some decent prospects back in return.

RIP to Vin Scully. A true legend in broadcasting. It still amazes me that he did it for 67 years and it's already been six years since he retired. I'll miss him.

And he was still really good at his job right up until he retired. This was a double whammy this week with the passings of Bill Russell and Vin Scully. I'm very sentimental and a large part of my childhood basketball and baseball fandom/following just left us. It was such a different game, a different time, an innocent time. Every time one of these legends passes away, I literally think of that Don Henley song/title/lyric - this is the end of the innocence.
