An 88-year-old musician you may not know you know passed away Wednesday: Dave Frishberg, a St. Paul, Minnesota, native; U of MN journalism school graduate; Air Force veteran; and jazz pianist and composer died in Oregon.
Who?
Despite a long and varied career including his own albums and appearances as a sideman with the likes of Ben Webster, you probably know him for things like this:

Ninety-one -- now that's a good age! Rest in peace, sir. And now a brief anecdote about "Send In The Clowns": When I was in the semi-pro receptions band in the late 80's, early '90s, we often used to accompany an American singer called Donna Lynton. (I believe she came across to NL with a US revue and decided to stay.) Her last song was always "SITC", which I used to accompany on the keyboard. She used to add clown's make-up as she sang: She had this full arrangement of it, which I didn't stick to (I went my own way as usual). She seemed happy with it anyway, except perhaps at some moments when she was waiting for me to play a chord and I was waiting for her to carry on singing! Very funny, but it always worked out in the end. The other song the two of us did was "The Rose", which she appreciated so much that she occasionally did it twice!

Rest in peace, sir. You and your three buddies were a major part of the soundtrack of my youth. Natural causes... and a good age after a strenuous life. Very sad all the same.

Very sad news. I saw some recent YouTube videos of his and Mickey's live performances and Mike did not look well. Like jk said, The Monkees were a big part of the soundtrack of my youth, too. We watched the TV show in our house every week, and I continued to enjoy the reruns. But the music...jeez...that great music. As many records as they sold - and they rivaled everybody for a few years - I still think their music remains underrated. It holds up as well as anybody's from that period. Mike's contributions, songwriting-wise, including "Mary Mary", "Listen To The Band", "The Girl I Knew Somewhere", "You Just May Be The One", and "You Told Me" were highlights. And, of course, there's "Different drum"; that was a great one, too, for Linda Ronstadt and The Stone Poneys. AM Gold.
I do have a confession. I disagreed with Mike for the way he "fought" to have the group take more control of their music, including song choices and playing their own instruments. Oh, I respected him for his strong stance; he really believed in it and was the driving force in forcing change. However, I always thought the The Monkees were never the same after that. Don Kirshner made some good choices, or maybe I should say that I preferred the previous material more.
Although Davey Jones passed away almost ten years ago and Peter Tork almost three years ago, it does seem like we lost the three Monkees in such a short period of time. It must be difficult for Mickey... R.I.P. Robert Michael Nesmith.

Well as the professor has been saying all along, I was at that final show at the Greek theater and I watched intently and listened to every note because I knew it was the last time I would ever see the monkeys and I knew that Mike was not going to last long afterward.
He spoke so poignantly and philosophically to the crowd about love and it was clear that he was sending his final messages as he felt the angel of death approaching.
And you pardon me for putting it into poetic or spiritual terms , but If you see the videos from that concert you'll know that he was speaking as if already removed from the mortal realm.
He spoke of love and of a deeper connection between artist and audience and music and spirit , and in general it was just an absolutely beautiful evening.
and when I heard the news today I was not surprised because I've seen it coming and I was just grateful for the tremendous gift I had of that final show that final show of Mike and Mickey together.
It cannot be a part of me for now it's part of you......

I am sad to report that bassist, Phil Chen, passed away from cancer on December 14, 2021. Phil was 75 years old. I first became aware of Phil back in 1974 when he joined Robby Krieger and John Densmore's post-Doors' band, the Butts Band. Phil went on to record with Jeff Beck (on Blow To Blow), Rod Stewart (playing on "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy", "Young Turks", and "Hot Legs"), Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton, Ray Charles, Bob Marley, Jackson Browne, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Brian May's Star Fleet Project. Phil later toured with Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger in the Doors Of The 21st Century. I saw Phil perform with Robby Krieger in 2017 in Phoenixville, PA. I saw him milling around the hall before the show. I regret that I didn't approach him and shake his hand. I read that Phil was a great guy who was very approachable and enjoyed chit-chatting and taking pictures with fans. R.I.P. Phil.

I only became acquainted with Phil Chen a year or two ago when I googled Rod's "Sexy" to find out who the heck was playing that awesome bass line.
Rest in peace, sir.

James Mtume died at age 75. Born James Heath, son of jazz legend Jimmy Heath, Mtume was a percussionist, songwriter, and producer with wide-ranging credits spanning work with Herbie Hancock, Don Cherry, and Miles Davis to Mary J. Blige, Roberta Flack, and R. Kelly.
Here is a song Miles Davis titled for him, "Mtume," from the 1974 album Get Up With It. Mtume is on percussion.
