R.I.P. Ronnie Spector, who passed away at age 78 after a brief battle with cancer. "Be My Baby", "Walking In The Rain", "Baby I Love You", "Frosty The Snowman", "Sleigh Ride", and on and on. She was Brian Wilson's friend, fan, and inspiration. So very sorry to hear this. Ronnie, Estelle, Nedra and Phil together provided some of the greatest pop ever committed to wax. May she rest in peace.

My first memories of Meat Loaf were at junior high dances circa 1989 or so, when the DJ would play "Paradise By the Dashboard Light," and somehow all the girls would be excited and dance in a group to it, singing along ... and none of us boys knew it. At all. (To this day, I don't understand how the girls in my class had various group knowledge that nobody else had.) We stood along the wall, clueless.
Then around my junior year of high school he came back with his massive hit, "I Would Do Anything For Love," and I wondered who the hell was this old man and why was he trying to be a cool rock star when he was so old and pathetic? I just checked, and he was 45 at the time, which is how old I am now. Father Time is laughing at me.
RIP, Mr. Loaf.

My first memory of Meat Loaf was on the 1976 Ted Nugent album, Free-For-All. I bought the 1975 Ted Nugent album and loved it. It's one of the best hard rock albums of that era. So, I then bought Ted's follow-up album, Free-For-All. Ted was an average lead vocalist and Derek St. Holmes was a great lead vocalist, but Free-For-All featured yet a third lead vocalist - Meat Loaf - and he was great! Then, a year later, Bat Out Of Hell came out and I remember thinking, "Hey, I know that singer!"

Unknowingly, my first memory of Meat Loaf was his cameo in Wayne's World, but at the time, I had no clue who he was. Then, in eighth grade, I Would Do Anything For Love was a massive hit. I wasn't overly aware of his previous material at that time, but it was interesting that, in late 1993, just as alternative/grunge was really starting to take full control over the rock spectrum, here came Meat Loaf with one of the most unlikely hit albums of my lifetime. That song, and the second single Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through, were everywhere in late 1993 / early 1994. I didn't really get into him until about my early 20s, and really didn't go beyond compilations until I was around 33 or 34, when I bought the first two Bat albums.

Well this was my intro to Meatloaf! I will never forget the first time I saw the dinner scene in Rocky Horror.

Betty Davis, funk musician whose debut album band included the likes of Larry Graham, Neal Schon, and Greg Errico (of Sly and the Family Stone), has died. She was 76.
Davis was also a wife of Miles Davis for some time, and is considered to have been a major influence bringing him toward electric music including rock and roll and funk. Miles included a photo of her on the cover of his great 1968 album Filles de Kilimanjaro and titled a song after her, the fabulous "Mademoiselle Mabry" (Mabry being her maiden name).
I ought to post one of her songs, but I much prefer Davis's tribute to her.

Very sad news. Loved his distinctive voice and piano playing. So many times I welcomed "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" on the radio. "Conquistador" is a favorite, too. I also enjoyed his performance on Concert For George. R.I.P. Gary Brooker.
