On TIDAL listened to all the songs on the first disc up to Help Me Rhonda. The bass is universally louder and more booming and sometimes it's good, and it's really great driving music. Don't worry baby has Alan playing bass on it and boy a new appreciation for his great bass work on that song which the new mix favors and highlights.
I really want to know what Dave thinks of these songs because you can certainly hear more of that Tak tak driving Rhythm from his guitar, and on all the songs that include him his part is now louder more distinct and more discernible as part of that unique early Punk sound that they were establishing in the studio.
Sometimes the background vocals are more distinct and in general there is something new and different on every song that perks up your ears and makes you think about the music and the composition. Is anything new and different about California Gurls? That one just did not pop for me in terms of being different though I thought it sounded fantastic.

On that subject, prof, you must surely recall this particular tutorial... That's a fascinating way of putting it. It's his part in what I call the "Carl-Dave guitar machine in full flight" as heard on the Surfin' U.S.A. album.

I also realized several of the early surf and car songs that didn't make the original SOS were left off. Songs like Catch a Wave, 409, Hawaii, and Little Honda.
I know Howie seemed to want to focus away from that era to a certain extent, but those songs are also pretty big omissions in a three disc "best of." Especially when you consider they actually had room to spare on the discs.

... but I think reaction was way overblown elsewhere. Overblown and unrelenting.

I have listened to a lot of the new set. I think the new mixes are interesting, with a lot of new sounds and intricate things to be heard in the songs. However, I don’t know if it is good to have new listeners hear these iconic songs for the first time in new mixes that in many cases sound much different than the original songs. I would rather see something like a 60th anniversary new remixes album or something like that, and release a compilation with the songs as the original creators intended. Just my opinion!!

Yeah, I have mixed feelings (though not particularly strong feelings) about a 'best of' or 'greatest hits' compilation not featuring original mixes. And if it were marketed more directly as a standalone remix album, that would give the mixers even more freedom to be creative. That said, if this set is truly the entry point for a listener, I honestly don't think the mix matters. The songs are the songs. The performances are the performances. Even if they're audiophiles who take issue with any number of things, if they like the music they'll track down the original albums or whichever previous compilation other audiophiles recommend. And I'll say this: if it weren't for the remixes I wouldn't give this set a single listen. Why would I? There was never any need for this release. The 60th anniversary, itself, doesn't excite me. Not sure what the point is. 25 and 50, I get. Those are milestones. But this always seemed like a stretch to me. Especially considering the state of the "group". They're obviously not treating it like they did C50!
Edit: So, yeah, as I've said before, I'm interested in remixes, but finding the right home for them is something to consider. But I fully appreciate that there are competing interests involved in all these decisions.

I think that would be a fascinating option to give whoever would be involved--whether Linett/Boyd or any number of qualified and interesting people--more free reign to really play around with what's there, but not potentially confusing new listeners. Even something like the original set being original mixes (maybe remastered, or maybe more subtle remixes here and there as necessary) and then purchase getting you a code for download/streaming of the more radical remix versions, with that remix-only version also available for purchase individually.

Here is a glowing (5/5 stars) review of SoS from American Songwriter.

It looks like the new Sounds of Summer had a successful launch on Amazon.
It current ranks #12 overall in CDs / Vinyl.
And, it ranks #5 overall in Best Sellers in Pop.

Looking at the Billboard 200, Sounds of Summer moved up to #31, up from 108.
It's just below Kate Bush's Hounds of Love, which leads me to wonder (please let me) if SOS would've cracked the top 30 had it included California Dreamin', a song that even without the bump from Stranger Things would've made more sense on Sounds of Summer than about 15 other selections.

I'm curious...Did anyone on this board purchase the CD or vinyl set?

I did not. After I ended up not buying the Feel Flows set, I think the days of me buying physical media are over, except for maybe new material.

Neither did I, and I have no immediate plans to.
