Just to clarify: Could one of you provide a description and timestamp of "Brian's part" that's being referred to in this discussion?

Just to clarify: Could one of you provide a description and timestamp of "Brian's part" that's being referred to in this discussion? You first hear him in the chorus just after the 1:00 mark. If you still can't tell, it'll be easy to pick out listening to it and the original back to back.

Well dang, I thought I'd be able to go into work tomorrow and listen to the entire new SOS collection, but alas, I have a training that's going to take up the bulk of my morning.

Thanks, The Cincinnati Kid and kds. That's what I thought, but I just wanted to be sure! I'm not 100% convinced that it's Brian, but I don't have any guesses as to who it sounds more like. Either way, Carl's more prominent "ooh-ooh-ooh" and that high part at the 1:00 mark are my two main qualms with the mix. I really enjoy the mix, though, overall. By the way, I went back and listened to the 'vocals only' mix of "Marcella" from Feel Flows and both parts are prominent there, too. Honestly, I think that's a better place for it (as an alternate/'vocals only' track) than on SoS. Oh, and Kapitan, I don't think not noticing Carl's "ooh-ooh-ooh" in the original mix is embarrassing at all. I hadn't either. It's an odd part (and thus not what your ears are expecting or following) that doesn't cut through the mix.

Had you asked me, I'd have said FF included a track-only version of "Mess of Help" and "Marcella," which would have been half right!
I do agree that the copyright (or other rarities type) comp is a better place for fiddling than a greatest hits release, though.

I don't plan on buying any more BB/BW albums but I do follow the relevant threads up to a point, here and at EH, and appreciate many of the posts. I even play the occasional track (on YouTube), although these are exclusively songs that are new to me.
I'd feel uncomfortable posting the following at EH but not here. Whether there's any logic in that is anybody's guess...
I just gave a listen to the SOS version of "Can't Wait Too Long", more out of idle curiosity than anything else, and rather liked what the men have done with it:
Still, old habits die hard and my heart will forever lie with the SS/WH twofer version, probably because it was the one I heard first:

It's possible it could be someone else, but it definitely sounds like Brian's high vocals from that era to me. I don't really have an issue with an alternate mix being included on a best of comp. To me, it's no different than a live version or a re-recorded version being included on a best of, which is fairly common.

My main test of audio is in the car, so I've only been able to closely listen to the first ten or so tracks so far. Listening to rest on some ok headphones at work currently. Early notes are most things have been turned "up". Bass is louder, treble is higher, etc. Some of it works and results in more clarity and more fresh sounding music, some of it makes certain instruments sound flat with a little bit of hiss. Worst example so far is probably Surfin' Safari, but the average listener probably won't notice the bad stuff. For years I've wished for some of these songs too sound more punchy and clear, and I've got my wish, mostly for the better. I expect there will be one or a few more clunkers, but I think reaction was way overblown elsewhere.

My training ended earlier than I thought, so I'm listening to SOS 2.0 right now, via Spotify on PC speakers.
The first change that jumped out to me was on When I Grow Up (To Be a Man), the guitar lick after the second verse is almost completely drowned out by the vocal harmonies.

I was just going to listen, also on Spotify, but it's all buggy this morning. It keeps giving "There was an error in playback" messages, which I could confirm without the message, as nothing will play... I really hate Spotify.
Looks like it's all on YouTube so I'm going to listen there.

That stinks. I'm almost through "disc one." So far, so good.
I still have to shake my head a bit at the inclusion of California Feelin' on yet another BB compilation. While there are a couple tracks on discs two and three I personally wouldn't have put on a best of collection (lookin' at you Vegetables), I can at least see why they're there.

I don't understand "California Feelin" popping up repeatedly. It's just not that good a song (in any of its versions), in my opinion. I think California Feelin' is relentlessly OK. I think it would've made a fine album track on MIU, LA Light, or even KTSA. I don't understand why it keeps popping up on compilations though. Like I said before, somebody at BRI really believes the song has legs. That aside, I'm coming near the end of SOS 2.0. Some of the new mixes are pretty good. The Night Was So Young in particular sounded quite good. None of the new mixes really make me want to buy an expanded version of a best of compilation that I already own, which contains slightly different versions of songs I already own. But, I will say it's an extremely enjoyable set overall. It's got just about anything you'd want in a Beach Boys collection. You have the hits, the unsung album tracks, rockers, ballads, quirky stuff. It's a nice selection of some of the greatest music ever recorded. One big omission that I'm just noticing - The Little Girl I Once Knew. I could very easily quibble about some choices, like the inclusion of California Feelin' and ignoring the TWGMTR album completely, but TLGIOK seems like a pretty big oversight.
