The trailer for the upcoming Sparks documentary is out. If I'm not mistaken, Sheriff John Stone is a fan? I have to admit other than seeing their name and some clips in passing on this board, I can't say I know a thing about them, not a song or even their style. I'm about to watch the trailer to learn a little something, anyway!

The big hard rock oldies tour of Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Poison, and Joan Jett has been postponed locally for a second time, with the originally 2020 show now set for August 2022.
You've got to think Motley Crue in particular assumed they'd have the buzz of their biopic behind them when they unretired, not realizing they'd have to wait another two years (and lose that momentum).
The only major outdoor show still on locally is the Green Day/Weezer/Fall Out Boy show in August--except GnR, which is technically still on but widely assumed to be postponed again.

Thank you for the link. I am REALLY looking forward to this. Sparks has deserved a documentary for a long time. 50 years and 25 studio albums. I think it's time. I've been threatening to start a Sparks' thread. I think it's time for that, too. I would like to post a 20 song "Best Of Sparks", just in case anybody would like to explore it.

Please go ahead, Sheriff. I became reacquainted with the Mael brothers some ten years ago. The album that made the greatest impression on me was Lil' Beethoven (2002). This is the fantastic opening track, "The Rhythm Thief". (I'm no fan of pop videos but Sparks have made some brilliant ones in their time.) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lil%27_Beethoven

Big concert this summer in New York. Paul Simon and Bruce Springsteen are already signed up. How about Billy Joel? Er...KISS (cough)?

I'm really surprised this show is happening. They will undoubtedly have to use some creative camera work. I hope Tony does well:

I wore out my LP of Kimono My House back in High School. Glad Sparks has not been forgotten. They were groundbreaking at the time. I am going to have to check this out. Thanks Kapitan!

I literally wore out my first copy of Kimono My House - Sparks' shining hour IMO. That trifecta of Kimono My House, Propaganda, and Indiscreet is still my favorite Sparks' period/sound.

Watched this today. Edgar Wright was the perfect director for this movie. His style perfectly compliments The brother’s quirky sense of humor. I don’t think you have to be a Spark’s fan to enjoy this. The story itself is fascinating. Thanks so much for the head’s up!

Any other details to share? I'm very interested needless to say.

Any other details to share? I'm very interested needless to say. I rented it on Vudu. It was $19.99 to rent. The previews were very intriguing, and I knew my husband was going to be working on the hot tub all day, so I bit. It is 140 minutes, so it is a bit long, but part of that is the credits and the stuff afterwards. Also - the span is 50 years and 25 albums, so there is a lot of ground to cover. I could watch Russell and Ron converse all day. They are THAT funny! Who knew Russell was a high school quarterback or that their father died when they were both quite young. Their cool mom took them to see the Beatles TWICE! There is a scene where they find out just before they go on a TV show, that the budget for a video has been eliminated by the record company, so they make a frame, and in the course of their interview on the show, sing the song lyrics inside the frame since the show is being filmed. They do it to shame the record company and it is hilarious! The looks on the TV hosts faces are hysterical. Then they try to bill the record company for the materials they used to make the frame! You can't make this stuff up! It's almost Pythonesque. There is quite a bit of their live performances and some pieces of their videos. A lot of talking heads, but they are good ones, like Flea, John Taylor, Weird Al and Jane Wiedlin, with whom Russell evidently had a fling! They don't dwell too long on any one period, so nothing gets shorted. I do recommend it. It was a fun watch.

Finally - FINALLY - it looks like Sparks and specifically Ron and Russell Mael are getting their much-deserved recognition.
