I'm in that exact boat except for me it was mostly Zeppelin and some Queen boots. And some of those were only on cassette (even in the era of CDs)! It wasn't unusual to pay $20-30 for a one-disc boot that sounded terrible. That explains why I was always broke in college...

I only have one or two Queen boots. As obsessive as I was about them in my teens, I never really seeked out bootlegs of them. Although, I do have a couple of bootleg DVDs of them, one from the excellent 1977 Earls Court show, which I keep hoping gets a legit release as many of their long bootlegged concert films got legit releases over the years (Rainbow '74, Hammersmith '75, Milton Keynes '82).

Queen boots were much harder to come by than Zep ones, I recall that. It was a few shows, the Smile recordings, Larry Lurex recordings ... not a lot else. I think the BBC recordings, before that album was officially released.

I think the BBC recordings, before that album was officially released. My father has a BBC recording called "Live at the Beeb" that I'm fairly certain was a boot. I think the BBC stuff was officially released in 1995, was the expanded On Air release a few years ago. I do have a "grey" release of the Smile band called "Ghost of a Smile" that I got at a record show many years ago. There's also a "grey" release called Pre-Ordained that contained five of the Smile songs (leaving off Doin' Alright) and the Larry Lurex songs. That one was actually sold at Best Buy for a brief bit.

The Grammys performers have been announced for Sunday's show. The good news is I won't have to worry about trying to catch the show, as I'm overwhelmingly ambivalent (at best) about them. I'll probably look up Haim's performance after the fact ... and that's probably about it.
Other performers mostly fall into two categories: people I don't like (Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Chris Martin, Billie Eilish, Harry Styles, John Mayer), and people I don't recognize (Bad Bunny, DaBaby, Lil Baby, Roddy Ricch, Mickey Guyton).

It's always the devil with pop music ... every few years, it seems, Satan is coming for your kids. (As a "survivor" of the Satanic Panic of the 80s, pardon me if I'm never especially concerned about Beelzebub invading my earholes.)
But I do feel a little bad for the woman who wrote a children's book about her autistic child finding his voice via Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" only to have that book released around the same time he was selling Satan-themed shoes and giving pole-dancing tips. That's not good for children's book sales!

I think it was about 15 years ago some friends began complaining that SXSW had sold out, gone commercial, wasn't the same anymore. So I don't think this really changes anything, other than continuing a long-since established redirection.

This story could easily fit with the politics thread, but I'll put it here. Jon Schaffer, the guitarist and founder of heavy metal band Iced Earth, was part of the Capitol riot on January 6. He could get up to 20 years, but it looks like he's entering into a plea bargain to lessen his sentence in exchange for information on other people at the Capitol that day. Considering half the band quit in the wake of this mess, and Schaffer is the lone constant member over the last 30+ years, this will more than likely spell the end of the band. www.nme.com/news/music/iced-earth-jon-schaffer-pleads-guilty-to-us-capitol-riot-charges-2922419

Perhaps live music is really returning? The Flaming Lips have announced a good-sized tour for 2021-22, running from November through May. As you can surmise from those dates, it is not just a summer outdoor-venue kind of tour: they're playing clubs around the U.S. and Canada.

Last week, Genesis announced a run of arena shows for November in the States.
Also, locally, the M3 Festival (80s hard rock / metal festival) is set to return from its hiatus on July 4 weekend in Columbia, MD.
I've not heard anything about restrictions, but I guess more information will be forthcoming.
I've seen most of the bands on the M3 bill, but having never seen Genesis in any incarnation, or any individual members, I've pretty tempted to check out their DC show.

Interesting to look through, but I have to admit I don't mind most of these acts not releasing music... I think Jimmy Page is the one I'd be most interested in hearing from. Several of the others, I have liked but just can't imagine liking anything from now. And then quite a few, I just never cared about to begin with.

Several of the others, I have liked but just can't imagine liking anything from now. And then quite a few, I just never cared about to begin with. It's been so long, I don't even think about new music from Billy Joel. Same with Poison. The guys from Poison have pretty much said that nobody would care about new music from them anyway. So, they can either try to release an 80s style album in the 20s, which might garner some interest from a small amount of diehards. Or, they could pull a Bon Jovi and change their sound to make it more acceptable for soccer moms and bro country fans. And I'm thankful they didn't do that. REO and Steve Miller, I'm more a comp / best of guy.
