I wonder. Because with the reduction in people buying physical copies, presumably the production runs will be much smaller than they would have been in the past--even than 2012 (and far fewer than, say, the Good Vibrations box from the 90s). So maybe doing a 3-disc instead of 2-disc set wouldn't be that big a deal if they're printing 100k instead of 2 million or something. (Made up those numbers, obviously, for effect.)
Also, though, I'd bet more emphasis would be placed on vinyl on the physical side of things than is placed on CDs. I suspect that more people who want to buy a thing are interested in the collectible aspect of it, the artwork aspect, and so on. (So vinyl with free digital download code or something.)
I guess we'll see, probably in about a year.

David Beard of ESQ was on Tuesday's Beach Boys Talk episode before the main (musical) guest, and he speculated something like we've been suggesting here: another comp (with maybe a new song), a few shows used to create a special for later streaming. I forget whether he lumped that into the upcoming doc or whether those would be distinct (in his speculative opinion--he was clear to say he literally has no inside info).
But yeah, you know there has to be more reunion-centered product (even if they don't do shows ... which they will, assuming no tragic circumstances develop). Though really, I don't know what would differentiate a 60 Big Ones from 50 Big Ones (other than 10 more songs). Assuming they stick to that formula of basically putting together a definitive set, it would be almost entirely duplicative. If they go another route and try to make it more a deep-cuts thing, well, nobody would care or want it.
I agree that we can probably expect a 60 Big Ones, which would conceivably be a helluva collection, probably the best BB 2CD comp ever! However, the time restriction - 80 minutes per CD - will limit the selection process. The 50 Big Ones collection has 25 songs per CD. To add 5 songs to each CD is mathematically possible; the band has several "short" songs to choose from. But, it will eliminate some of the possible deeper, longer, over three-minute long tracks. They could go to 3 CDs but I can't see Capitol springing for the extra disc, etc. IMO, Sounds of Summer along with the 2007 companion comp Warmth of the Sun combine to make a pretty damn good two disc collection. SOS is about 75 minutes and 30 tracks and WOTM is 78 mins and 28 tracks, so you could potentially play with the order and add two short songs.

Hoping for a 3 hour DVD of The Beach Boys final performance together with the 5 surviving beach boys and may be guest appearances by Ricky and Blondie and some appearances by the kids and California sound and California saga and something that goes on for 3 hours with all these surviving beach boys that we can watch again and again until we turn 80.
And with real great sound production and cracker Jack performance as by the orchestra and The Beach Boys themselves

And then to see the 5 surviving beach boys come to the front of the stage and sing one last surfer girl acccapella in honor of all we have lost and in honor of Dennis and Carl and so make Brian's 1st song the final song ever performed by The Beach Boys And then to have mike, who is so eloquent say farewell and we will see you again somewhere, sometime and forever in the endless summer... quote author=" Kapitan" source="/post/21135/thread" timestamp="1620340857"] At least you're not getting your hopes up!

Sheriff, I got choked up to in all seriousness when I wrote it and even when I re read it and I had the great pleasure of composing that and communicating with you scholars while grading a stack of papers on The Beach Boys legacy. Just a very wonderful moment for me and thank you for sharing in it. If The Beach Boys reunite for a three hour concert, and we get another 55 minute 21 song "concert film" as a little keepsake, I'm getting some bull horns, grabbing a surfboard, and leading an insurrection at the Capitol Building. Capitol Records building to be clear.

I've already speculated and proposed ideas ad nauseam - and will probably continue to do so - but there are ways to make a potential 60th Anniversary concert different and more fulfilling than just coming out and cranking out 40 songs (not that there's anything wrong with that). What about:
Part 1 - The Beach Boys (Brian, Mike, Al, Bruce & David) come out and perform a 45-minute rock and roll set (with a ballad or two or three interspersed).
Part 2 - The Beach Boys leave the stage, David stays and performs a medley of surf rock songs. David leaves (or stays) and Blondie Chaplin comes on stage for the first time, performing "Sail On Sailor" and "Wild Honey" (with background vocals by the backing musicians). Blondie performing "Feel Flows" is optional. Part 3 - The five Beach Boys return, sit or stand at mics at the front of the stage and do an "unplugged set" of three songs; David strumming an acoustic guitar is optional. Part 4 - The Beach Boys (with Blondie joining them) do a 30-minute set of deeper tracks including tributes (with video) to Dennis and Carl. Part 5 - The encores, with "Fun, Fun, Fun" closing the show. The five Beach Boys join hands, take one last bow, and exit the stage waving to the fans.

I would love to see Part 4 of this show conclude with the closing suite from TWGMTR (From There To Back Again / PCH / Summer's Gone). It's a frickin' shame that the most brilliant thing to appear on a BB album since the early 70s have never been performed live.

What's the thinking behind including Blondie but not Ricky? Is it just that Blondie was more prominent? I ask because they were equals in terms of their group membership, and Ricky lasted longer, after all.

Yes, because Blondie was more prominent as a lead vocalist (and on a fairly popular single) and as a guitar player, and a lead guitarist at that. Also, you could integrate him into the act/backing band easier for a series of songs. With Ricky, you'd have to have a second drum set or move somebody over to percussion. I prefer keeping John Cowsill as the full-time drummer, though I would have no problem with Ricky Fataar being a part of the show. Another thing to consider would be Blondie's contribution to Brian's concerts for quite a few years now actually. He's kind of earned it.

I do see that, for sure. But I also see how integrating Ricky would be a nice gesture to honor his time with the group--especially if it's truly a finale show. I thought Brian's pre-NPP Vegas show did a nice job of bringing him out. They could do something like that. I'd love to see him drum a tune or two, then play pedal steel or something on another one. Just show him off a bit.
Along those lines, it would be nice to get Billy Hinsche involved. I'm not one of those who necessarily supports getting everyone who was ever involved, or all the kids and grandkids, involved. But I think all the members and some of the most prominent supporting musicians should be represented, at least.

Agree on both counts. If the shows are indeed...the last ones...yes, it would be fitting to include Ricky who, like it or not, was a "real" member of The Beach Boys.
(cough) Scott Bennett would probably not be a member of the 60th Anniversary band, which conveniently opens up a spot for Billy Hinsche.
