OK, I was obviously being a sarcastic jerk with that above comment about mic stands, but Adam actually kicks off the episode with a little spiel about exactly that, but turning it back around to emphasize Bruce's key role in early California rock music. Way to make me feel bad, Mr. Marsland...
(In all seriousness, I hope everyone knows that despite sarcastic comments about various people or their music, I do respect everyone involved in each of the bands. Making music for a living isn't easy, and all of these guys had key roles in making some of the best ever. Yes, I will make fun for the caps, the shorts, the comments, the mic stand adjustments, the inaudible instruments, the endless remakes...but that doesn't mean I don't think they're all awesome. It's teasing. Fun, of the sort I'd have with my friends.)

Poooff! I found it quite an exhausting listen. Admittedly, I was dog tired last night, but still. I was looking for a place to pause it to take a toilet break but there wasn't one! Once the admittedly eloquent Mr Marsland starts speaking, man he does not let up. Maybe there was too much preamble, maybe there was too much about this tiresome melt-down business. The parts about the songs themselves were spot-on, as always. But please, Adam, make it a habit to name Craig's team-mates each time. Joshilyn, Will and John deserve it.

Well, I posted something similarly crusty at EH and got a sweet reply back from Adam. It's all here if anyone's interested...

A new Pet Squares is up, Side Two of Party, and with what Adam calls "a *very* deep dive into both "Barbara Ann" and the concurrent single "The Little Girl I Once Knew," including a breakdown of song vocal areas and the intro." Sounds fun, looking forward to the listen.

Sounds fun, looking forward to the listen. It is fun! Good to hear "Barbara Ann" getting some attention. And "TLGIOK" is, of course, extraordinary. In its closing minutes Adam mentions two songs from around that time that have strong musical connections with "TLGIOK". Both are on YouTube and both are worth hearing.

New from Pet Squares, "Pet Sounds Part 2: Actions & Reactions."
Part 1 was very interesting, a lot of discussion of what Brian was doing in the year or so leading up to the recording of Pet Sounds. Once he was staying home, how busy was he in the studio, and when? What was the timeline around the band's sessions and releases throughout 1965 and '66? What kinds of ideas was Brian having about what might go into the album that became Pet Sounds? Those kinds of things.
I'm sure Part 2 will be similarly interesting.

I really recommend this episode. Adam's take on the label's versus the band's support (and/or lack of same) is really interesting.

I'd say this mini-series is a must-watch not just for BB fans but for anyone interested in the development of popular music in the 20th century. Adam is the business.

Part 3 in the excellent Pet Sounds series: Thanks, Cap'n. I shall be watching, not tonight, maybe tomorrow... Adam's series, the guest episodes of Beach Boys Talk and Jacob Hobbsen's A Book of Brian are unmissable in my book.
