Beach Boys-adjacent musician and great guy Adam Marsland has kind of* launched a Beach Boys-themed podcast, Pet Squares. The pilot is on YouTube now (as of yesterday), with the idea for the time being that he'll go through the albums in chronological order.
He also has gotten some involvement--he says "consulted"--from Craig Slowinski and Alan Boyd. Between them, they've got a ton of musical knowledge and historical knowledge, everything you'd need. (Adam says he got the idea watching the YouTuber Giggens, whom we've actually referenced here as well, and indeed this seems like it could be a higher-level version of that.)
Here is the pilot episode, on Surfin' Safari. Let's be sure the show gets to some better albums! (I mean, if you want to stop supporting it after Love You, I'd be cool with that! Though I know it would make Adam mad, since he's an MIU/LA fan.)
*I say "kind of" because this is being released as a pilot, and Adam says if it gets a lot of views (and probably most importantly, if he gets subscribers and especially Patreon patrons through it), it will continue. If not, not. So if you like it, please consider supporting Adam one way or the other, be it just watching; subscribing on YouTube (which helps him grow his audience); or even becoming a Patreon patron.

I have a soft spot for Mr Marsland, as the stories and songs on this page helped keep me going through a particularly dark period -- stupidly I'd allowed myself to get embroiled in a telephone scam in late 2014, early 2015, which could well have turned nasty (all water under the bridge now). In fact I told him so, and regretted having just missed out on a Chaos Band gig in Amsterdam. I sincerely wish Adam so much luck with this venture. Having said that, my allegiance now lies with Joshilyn and her ongoing projects. In those dark days I went through all the songs in Adam's list, initially out of desperation but later because I really liked what I heard. So I went through them all again. "1 in 4" is the first in that list. It includes what is probably my favourite couplet ever: "When my baby and I are together in bed / I swear she sees my body on another man's head" Go well, sir.

Darn, I was hoping Pet Squares would be a BB's version of Hollywood Squares. Can you imagine Mike, Brian, Al, Bruce and David as celebrity guests on that show?

I meant to post this the other day, but Adam Marsland posted a second episode of Pet Squares: Surfin' USA. (This went up around the same time as those Carl & Dennis tour videos I posted.)

I watched the Surfin' Safari episode last night. Definitely worth watching. (No surprise there.) I 'liked', subscribed, and plan to keep watching. I hope that encourages him to carry on. So, is Mike playing bass on "Heads You Win"?

So, is Mike playing bass on "Heads You Win"? I just watched it myself. Adam's quite a character! I was waiting for a few words of praise about "The Shift"'s forward-looking harmonic structure but it never came! Interesting to hear about who sang what in the stack, with a few unsolved mysteries thrown in. I'll check out #2 in the series another time.

Ha! Just watched this a minute ago... Fascinating to learn just how much Mike's sax is present on this album, if largely inaudible to me (I'm not a headphones person). For my money the most enlightening information Adam provides, also on this occasion, is about the vocal stacks. In that respect, it's odd he never mentions that the four-part sung title of "Finders Keepers" (losers weepers) borrows the exact "lie" (in a different key) of the vocal stack when The Four Seasons sing the title of "Big Girls Don't Cry". Big/Finders and Girls/Keepers are identical. Not just that, Mike does a Nick Massi with his bass intonation of the BB title. That aside, I love these videos, as full of humour as they are. I understand the next one won't be around for a while. It will be worth the wait. Thanks for linking these, Cap'n.

Thanks, Cap'n. I've got it bookmarked for less busy times (read: next week).

Well, I'm afraid it appears you've missed your chance (as have I). Just loaded it up to watch and got a message that it's been pulled due to copyright claim by Brother Records.
Very disappointing of Brother. Clearly, when actual music is available for free listening on pages other than the band's own, an obviously academic/journalistic critical review of the work should also be available. And there are dozens of "bootleg" copies of these songs on YouTube without any kind of copyright claims.
Brother Records, honestly, you suck for this.

Bummer. Did he play music from the album? Or did he recreate it closely enough to fool the machines? Whatever the case, blocking videos like this is NOT in the best interest of the group!!! I was looking forward to watching it. Maybe, since he's already created the video and many fans are interested, he'll host it somewhere else.

Well, that stinks. I just finally sat down to watch the Surfin' Safari episode last night.
