Besides, it's cheerful:It is cheerful, and most satisfying to play! (On keyboard, together with others.) Summer? Beach? Certainly... so I'm sure there's some surf in there somewhere.

I usually opt for Jimmy Buffett's cover this time of year

I was actually debating on dropping this into either New Music for 2022 or Guilty Pleasures. It's a new 2022 release by a Maryland native named Jimmy Charles. It definitely qualifies as a guilty pleasure because it definitely has a bro country feel to it, and I usually despise bro country. However, he does name check many Maryland summer pastimes, with several references to my beloved Ocean City, MD.
Needless to say, the moment I heard it, I couldn't help but add it to my Spotify summer playlists

For me, that song always brings this memory:
Every summer (appropriately enough for the thread and song), an assortment of families on my mom's side would get together for camping trips. (My uncle was the manager of a few state parks over the years, so often we'd go to whatever park he was stationed at.) One year, this was my younger cousin's favorite songs. He was probably about 4-5 years old at the time (meaning I'd have been about 10, probably.) While he liked the song, he misunderstood the lyrics, and so he joyfully and repeatedly sang it as "suppertime, suppertime, sup-sup-suppertime." I'm not sure whether there was an ad around at the time with that lyric changed, or whether it was purely a misunderstanding on his part. But we all sure did think it was funny. I still can't hear the song without thinking of it as suppertime.

I wish The Beach Boys would've covered "Summertime, Summertime", kind of like the Jan & Dean version below. Think what Brian and Mike and the guys could've done with that song in 1964!

Here's a summer song I love, Joe Satriani's aptly named "Summer Song." He's one of the absolute rock guitar masters of all time, though not as famous as many of those who were in more traditional rock bands. Still, this song hit #5 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, and the album (The Extremist) went gold and hit #22 and hung around for months on the Billboard pop chart. Not bad for an instrumental record. (Andy Johns co-produced, which might have helped give it mainstream appeal.)
And in the video, that's the great Gregg Bissonette (I believe currently Ringo Starr's All-Starr drummer, not to mention his long and amazing history) on drums and most likely his brother Matt Bissonette on bass, though I'm not sure what Matt looks like. (He was the primary bassist on the album, though.)
Great, infectious summery melody.

I'd actually heard that Satch song before, but never knew the title.

I'd actually heard that Satch song before, but never knew the title. I think it was used in a car commercial or something at some point. At least I have vague recollections of it. But it also did get a little bit of airplay on radio and MTV at the time...a lot of airplay considering the genre.
(Ah, yes, "selling out," such a sin. If I were an artist like Satriani, I'd be selling out as much as is physically possible, considering being a virtuosic, mostly instrumental rock musician doesn't exactly pay like being a pop star.)

I remember when artists like KISS and Buffett used to get a lot of shit for "selling out," but they were ahead of the game.

This is the "Summer Breeze" I've always known and loved, in the 45-sized version by The Isley Brothers:

I always enjoy this classic on a lazy, summer day. A true work of art. Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong's "Summertime"...
