I've started putting together a summer playlist. Obviously I'm including some (okay, a lot) of the familiar summer staples, but I'm also balancing it out with some non-obvious songs. To help with the balance, I've found myself including songs that aren't necessarily about summer, but just kind of sound or feel like summer, for example, Fox on the Run by Sweet sounds like a summer song, to me.
So, what are some songs that sound like summer, but aren't necessarily about summer? I mentioned Fox on the Run above, but here's another I put on my playlist (along with another T.Rex song, Mambo Sun).

KDS, that was fast! I started perusing my iTunes and have, like, three songs so far... I pulled up my Spotify Summer playlist and pulled the ones that aren't summer themed, or by The Beach Boys, Buffett, or Bob Marley (even though the lyrics of those three aren't always specifically about summer of course).

Here are a bunch that I think sound like summer, or make good summer listening. To me, that means usually light, upbeat, exciting, positive, refreshing... Not everything here is all of those, but most are some. And I think I avoided anything too specifically direct about summer.
I only went up through bands/artists starting with "G." It's a little time consuming!
“Seems So,” Apples in Stereo “Sugar Sugar,” the Archies “Nude Beach A-Go-Go,” Azealia Banks “Sexx Laws,” Beck “Army,” Ben Folds five “A Good Man is Easy to Kill,” Beulah “Can I Keep Calling You Baby?” The Bicycles “Uptown Girl,” Billy Joel “Floater,” Bob Dylan “I’d Like to Be Your Lei,” the Brown Flamingos “Zig Zag Wanderer,” Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band (on my mind thanks to jk) “Rise and Shine,” the Cardigans “Perfidia,” Carrie Rodriguez “Here We Go Again,” Christopher Owens “Password,” Cotton Mather “Elevator Operator,” Courtney Barnett “Something So Strong,” Crowded House “Me Myself & I,” De La Soul “Everybody Come Down,” the Delgados “Dapper,” Domo Genesis (feat. Anderson .Paak) “Hey Man (Now You’re Really Living),” Eels “Stare at the Sun,” Eleanor Friedberger “Veronica,” Elvis Costello “Hey Deanie,” Eric Carmen “Tropical Ice-land,” the Fiery Furnaces “Barcelona,” Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballe “I Was Born to Love You,” Freddie Mercury “Faith,” George Michael “Lust For Life,” Girls “I’ll Have to Dance With Cassie,” God Help the Girl “Some of Shelley’s Blues,” Great Lakes “Paradise City,” Guns n Roses

These songs, while not specifically about summer, sound like summer to me: Steve Miller - Serenade The Beatles - It's Only Love A lot of Steve Miller songs have a very summery vibe to them. I have Wild Mountain Honey on my list, but Serenade's a good one too. Also, nice to see a Beatles song that isn't Here Comes the Sun.

“Sugar Sugar,” the Archies
“Uptown Girl,” Billy Joel
“Faith,” George Michael
“Paradise City,” Guns n Roses
Yes! Especially Uptown Girl - brilliant choice. Paradise City, too. I have that last one in my list as well.

It's partly because I first heard the Help album in full in the middle of the summer of 1994. Another one that I forgot to list is The Downeaster Alexa by Billy Joel. It always conjures up images of seeing the fishing boats in the harbor of West Ocean City.

I'm still working on my summer playlist, but so far, here are my songs that "sound" like summer, even if they don't have any obvious summer things about them:
Ce matin la - Air Coming Back to Life - Pink Floyd Money City Maniacs - Sloan If There Is Something - Roxy Music Sister Disco - The Who Miss You - The Rolling Stones In the Street - Big Star Runnin' Down a Dream - Tom Petty Groovin' - Young Rascals Ocean Pearl - 5440 Fox on the Run - Sweet The Tide is High - Blondie Remember a Day - Pink Floyd Mellow Out - Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats Smooth Sailin' - Leon Bridges This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide - The Kings Easy - The Commodores Sugarcane - Wide Mouth Mason Come Dancing - The Kinks Blue Jean - David Bowie Hooked on a Feeling - Blue Swede Metal Guru - T. Rex Boots or Hearts - The Tragically Hip Rock Lobster - The B52's Paradise City - Guns 'N' Roses Wild Mountain Honey - Steve Miller Band Shake - Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats Rattlesnake Charm - Sean Hayes Poets - The Tragically Hip Nightswimming - R.E.M. Sundown - Gordon Lightfoot
I definitely enjoy a mix of high energy fun tunes as well as more mellow ones, for the full summer experience in one playlist.

Looks good, bb, what I can see of it (I'm not on Spotify). My own big summer song is actually called "April", which I heard on a restaurant terrace last July during what was probably the hottest day of the year. I enquired about it and was told it was by a band called Beaumont. I tracked it down and discovered it on SoundCloud, where it's attributed to Beaumont keyboard player Mathieu Kyriakidis, who wrote the music. His sister Gael wrote and joyously sings the lyrics: soundcloud.com/mathieu-kyriakidis/april

This song fits into so many threads and categories for me. It's what I've been listening to lately, it's a song I wish The Beach Boys would've covered, it might be on my Top Ten Songs list, and it's definitely a summer song, reminding me of simpler times - riding my bike, catching baseball in the backyard, going swimming at the local pool, and listening to a transistor radio.
