This song fits into so many threads and categories for me. It's what I've been listening to lately, it's a song I wish The Beach Boys would've covered, it might be on my Top Ten Songs list, and it's definitely a summer song, reminding me of simpler times - riding my bike, catching baseball in the backyard, going swimming at the local pool, and listening to a transistor radio.
I remember "Lazy Day" but it wasn't for me in those days. Sounds great now though.

Lyrically it's an end of summer song, but it still has a summer vibe to it. I actually hadn't heard this since it was released in the late 90s, but it popped into my head just now, and I still love it.

Here’s an ironic one. Today by Smashing Pumpkins came out just as I was starting my graduating year of high school, and so it’s a kind of bookmark for me of that final high school year. Obviously the story behind this song is not a happy one, being about self harm and depression. I was fully aware of the song’s meaning at the time it came out. But it’s one of those songs where there is what the artist meant when they created it, and then there is what the listener takes from it.
On my final day of high school, a warm and sunny June day, (for all I remember, today might be the anniversary) I burst through the school doors into the parking lot, threw off my childhood like a tattered jacket onto the ground, got into my boyfriend’s K-Car (a nice Reliant automobile) and the two of us cruised the downtown loop together, blasting the radio with the windows rolled down. Today came on the radio, and I have a very distinct memory of the cheerful sounding intro and then the words “Today is the greatest day I’ve ever known” blasting from the stereo, with the sun and warm air on my face, and a warm and sunny feeling inside as we cruised. That was a unique joy and I don’t remember ever feeling exactly like that again.
So despite its intended meaning, for me, Today is a happy, summer song about leaving behind the scars of childhood and high school, knowing I was a fledgling jumping out of the nest, soon to be moving to a new town for university, taking care of myself for the first time, beginning the next exciting chapter of my life.

I was really hoping on getting some Summer Ales and debuting my summer playlists for 2021 this weekend, but with temps struggling to hit 60, I might hold off until next weekend.

You know me, Mr. Contrarian Type, but I don't think I've ever done a summer playlist before.
(I'm the guy who, in college, would sometimes make a point of NOT going out on a Friday or Saturday specifically because everyone did, and then would try to round up people on a Tuesday afternoon instead... Truly, I get it: I have been, and sometimes still am, an annoying human being.)
Maybe it's just that I'm getting older now, and more accepting of conventions, but with the summer-talk lately, I was thinking maybe I should put one together. Now whether I'll actually make a point of listening to it a lot through the summer, I cannot say. I guess we'll see.

My trying to put together a summer playlist back in 2005 is what lead me to The Beach Boys.
In 2005, I compiled two CDRs are various summer sounding songs from my CD collection. Going into 2006, I wanted to expand it, so that's when I got Sounds of Summer (and also Jimmy Buffett's Songs You Know By Heart), and expanded to four CDRs. I think most of what's on those CDRs are now on my Spotify summer playlists.

I finished my Summer 2021 CD this week, just in time for Memorial Day. I had planned to do a "various artists" one, but because of our recent discussions about a possible Beach Boys' 60th Anniversary album, I got sidetracked/influenced and the comp ended up being entirely Beach Boys-related:
The Beach Boys - Pacific Coast Highway
01 Do It Again (2012 Version) - The Beach Boys 02 Spring Vacation - The Beach Boys 03 That's Why God Made The Radio - The Beach Boys 04 Strange World - The Beach Boys 05 Somewhere Quiet - Brian Wilson 06 Sail Away - Brian Wilson 07 Full Sail - The Beach Boys 08 Don't Fight The Sea - Al Jardine
09 One Kind Of Love - Brian Wilson 10 This Beautiful Day - Brian Wilson 11 I'm Feeling Sad - Brian Wilson 12 Don't Worry - Brian Wilson 13 Tell Me Why - Brian Wilson 14 Summer's Gone - The Beach Boys 15 Whatever Happened - Brian Wilson 16 Pacific Coast Highway - The Beach Boys
17 Mexico - Dennis Wilson 18 Tug Of Love - Dennis Wilson 19 Too Cruel - Mike Love 20 The Right Time - Brian Wilson 21 From There To Back Again - The Beach Boys
22 Isn't It Time (Single Version) - The Beach Boys 23 Saturday Night - Brian Wilson 24 Surfin' - Mike Love

That's a pretty good BB selection there, Sheriff.
I'll probably post more summertime songs next week, when we have more summertime weather.

First off, Jerry Keller's "Here Comes Summer":
Next, "Summer Breeze", in the version by The Isley Brothers:
Last, "Her Face Forms In Summertime" by The Future Sound of London, with the most gorgeously summery guitar I know:
I dedicate these to bellbottoms, who I hope is doing OK...

Here is a transcription of my "Summer Driving Music" cd-r that I just found at the bottom of the jockey box in my car...I burned this over 10 years ago, and, well I don't listen to cds in the car anymore. But I do listen to the same music (from my phone):
1. All Over the World--ELO 2. It's a Beautiful Morning--Rascals 3. Highway Star--Deep Purple 4. No Matter What--Badfinger 5. Beach Baby--First Class 6. It Must Be Love--Madness 7. Drivers Seat--Sniff 'N' the Tears 8. Living in the USA--Steve Miller Band 9. Dizzy--Tommy Roe 10. Paper Sun--Traffic 11. Little Bit O' Soul--Music Explosion 12. What I Like About You--Romantics 13. Sunday Mornin'--Spanky and Our Gang 14. Finally Found a Home--Huey Lewis and the News 15. Human Race--Red Rider 16. Dance the Night Away--Van Halen 17. Holiday--Nazareth
Yeah, it's all over the place, but that's how I listen to my music!
