Ha, yes. Any song whose subjects are food, falling in love, Jesus and hypnotism has got a lot going for it. It seems Brian was going to offer it to Stevie Wonder or Elton John if The Voice wasn't interested. At the end of the day he recorded it himself. You can hear Brian talking about this song at 7:53, in what is a pretty lucid interview:

That's one of my favorite old interviews.

I have to give Jeff Beck credit. He has shown good taste in the Beach Boys-related songs he has chosen to cover - "Surf's Up", "Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder", "Caroline, No", and "Time".

Not a cover of the Beach Boys, but this new song by Oliver Sim samples Brian Wilson. Sim is from the band The xx.
This little article in Stereogum includes a brief quote: “‘GMT’ was one of the first songs made for the record,” Sim said in a statement. “I’d chased Jamie to Australia to escape British winter. We worked in Sydney and road tripped down to Byron Bay, stopping at secluded beaches and listening to a lot of The Beach Boys and Brian Wilson on the way. The first song we made was ‘GMT,’ sampling Brian Wilson’s ‘Smile.’ The song was written about pining over a love back home, thousands of miles apart on different time zones. It’s also a love letter to London.”

The Depp/Beck album is out, and so all of their BBs-related music is now available. Those three songs are:

An apparently new--newly posted video, at least--here is Manhattan Transfer doing "God Only Knows" with WDR Funkhausorchester (which immediately is my favorite name for a musical ensemble ever, and I like to imagine means Funk-House Orchestra in Dutch, German, or something).
I should add, you know how sometimes people make a big deal about the complexity of Brian's music because of a fifth in the bass or a half-diminished chord? Uh, this arrangement demonstrates actual musical complexity. (Which, mind you, does not equal quality, necessarily.)

They make a lovely job of "Time". The live performances of it get better as Johnny gets more confident with what is not exactly the easiest song to sing. That's drummer Vinnie Colaiuta going nuts during the second instrumental break ("This is for Dennis!!!"). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/18_(Jeff_Beck_and_Johnny_Depp_album)

This morning--just now, actually--I heard this on the radio. It's "Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)," as recorded by jazz guitarist Charlie Hunter and drummer Leon Parker on Hunter's 1999 album Duo. I don't believe I've ever heard of or heard it before.
If you think you hear a trio, that's because Hunter plays an 8-string guitar, often doing a bass part and a guitar part. The playing is very restrained and tasteful, not a typical jazz "blowing" version.

Here are Michael McDonald and Take 6 rehearsing "Don't Worry Baby" backstage. The message says it was "in a random backstage venue," but I'm assuming it was at the Grammy tribute venue before their performance.

I'd be interested to hear this: upcoming performances by the Vetta Chamber Music ensemble will include arrangements of "Good Vibrations" and, more interestingly, "Surf's Up" scored for two violins, cello, and piano. Maybe recordings will pop up on YouTube (but I didn't see any yet). www.createastir.ca/articles/joan-and-joe-vetta-chamber-music

Back in the late '80s, first half of the '90s, I was in this band that played mainly wedding receptions and office parties (when such things were tax deductible). We had to accompany numerous singers of varied quality, one of whom was Lee Towers. I recall the first and last gigs I played with him were the best. Yesterday, during a meal with SMiLE-Holland following the presentation of the Dutch-language book The Beach Boys in Holland, he surprised me by revealing that LT had recorded the C+TP song "Cuddle Up"! And actually it's not bad at all, if you can get past his vibrato: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Towers

While checking some different versions of this song to respond to Sheriff John Stone, I came across this previously unheard (by me) cover of BW's "Melt Away." I think the natural instrumentation in the arrangement helps demonstrate how it could have sounded different (and in my opinion, much better) had it been produced in a different context than the synth-driven one in 1988.
