Do we honestly not have a thread for this? I perused the General Discussion thread and didn't see one.
Last night while listening to NPR's "Fresh Air" and what should I hear between segments but this.
Of course, they don't say who the little interstitial musical segments are by, so this morning I dug around a bit to find out it was Brad Mehldau. It dates from 2018. While I had heard of Mehldau, I had no idea this existed.
Amusing note, AllMusic says this of the song: they "offer up a bright, waltz-like take on the Beach Boys' "Friends," the latter of which is so friendly you can almost sense Mehldau and his bandmates smiling at each other."
1. That's sweet. 2. A "waltz-like take" on "Friends?" As opposed to the original, which was ... also a waltz?

Looks like Steve Perry is getting into the act, too:

That is ... not to my taste.
But I can totally see how Brian Wilson would be the patron saint of these times, between the loneliness and hope his music has featured over the years.

Steve still has some pipes. That being said, I'm not really a fan of the version. Its a tad overdramatic. He gave The Beatles' I Need You a similar treatment on his 2018 album Traces.

Brian did become the first artist on the Rolling Stone In My Room series. Although, he didn't do In My Room. (Facepalm).

Is this one commonly known? I learned of it about 5 minutes ago, listening to an interview with John "Drumbo" French, former drummer and musical director for Captain Beefheart. It's partly a slightly tongue-in-cheek but straight cover, and partly an almost Zappa-like Cruisin' With Ruben and the Jets jokey take.
But anyway, here are Drumbo and Richard Thompson (plus Henry Kaiser and Fred Frith) with a manic take on Surfin USA.

She & Him, always big Beach Boys fans, posted a DIY cover of "Darlin": just a pair of acoustic guitars and a handful of vocals. It's lower energy, kind of a cooled-out vibe, sung an octave down (or in a radically different key). Points for caring about the music, and there are worse things in the world than looking at three or four Zooeys looking back at you.

Here's one you don't see every day: a Beach Boys "Surfin USA" parody (pandemic lockdown) cover produced by a libertarian magazine (Reason), and who do they tag? Mike, Brian, John Stamos, and VDP.

How about a recently uploaded, Adam Marsland Chaos Band performance of (still unreleased) "Carry Me Home"?

Very cool. Hard to believe the BBs abandoned the song. It’s powerful.
