The Beach Boys / Mike & Bruce will be playing the Oceans Calling Festival in Ocean City, MD at the end of September. They seem to be a bit of a square peg as the vast majority of the acts had their hey days in the 1990s or early 2000s. www.oceanscallingfestival.com/

The Beach Boys are playing a winery up here in the Seattle area, but I won't be going. I saw them at the Puyallup Fair 3 times - 2019, 2021, 2022 - when I could get grandstand seats for $35. To see them at the winery, where it's going to be closer to $100, no, it's not that important to me. It's not like Mike has a new album to promote, it's going to be the same show I saw, and I have bills to pay, mouths to feed. I will be seeing Al and company this weekend, never seen his band before, so this will be a real treat.

Looks like that's his "Family & Friends w/ Carnie and Wendy Wilson" band, so it's the whole shebang. Cool! I am not sure who is in that band now, but in the past it included Bobby Figueroa, Ed Carter, Probyn Gregory, Rob Bonfiglio, Debbie Shair, Matt Jardine, Carnie Wilson, Wendy Wilson, and Al Jardine.

Outside of the Wilson sisters and Matt, I'm not certain who is in the band, but following Al's Facebook page, this seems to be his preferred live format over the last couple years. I might consider seeing one of those shows if it came to my neck of the woods.

I think I would, too. I saw him on a Storytellers tour show, and it was fun, but I'd like to see this band (assuming it is similar personnel to the one I listed, which was '22). I'm much more interested in that than in the M&B group at this point. Though I have to be honest, depending on cost and location, I'm not even a sure thing to see this group of Al's. But it would definitely be under serious consideration.

I've seen Mike and Bruce a few times, and since they've had their recent turnover, the setlists seemed to have gone back to being quite predictable.
Al's show doesn't stray too much from a selection of BB hits, and a couple Wilson Phillips numbers, but it would be a format I haven't seen before.

Never seen Al with his own band. And this will probably be the only chance I get to see them.

I mean the music itself. Song selection, arrangements, etc., those kinds of things. The things people criticized Brian Wilson about a lot during his solo career while questioning his involvement. This isn't meant as a criticism of Al (or Brian) at all, by the way. But I know Rob Bonfiglio was Al's band's musical director a few years ago, and assume he is again. And while we know Al is a tinkerer in the studio, I can't imagine him being a major force in marathon rehearsals, or taking on a Carl Wilsonesque role, calling out someone for singing someone else's part or missing some bit they wanted included. It wouldn't surprise me if Al's role is a lot like Brian's was, which is mostly being the frontman, the name, and yes, having final say over set lists. But I would not be surprised if he doesn't do a whole lot more than showing up and singing.

In addition to Rob Bonfiglio, you also have Matt Jardine, who I would think has a lot of say, too, for obvious reasons.

I'm not sure Matt has the musical chops to take that demanding a role, though. (Of course it might not be as demanding a role with those pros who know the music inside and out, all having played with Brian Wilson and/or the Beach Boys.) Maybe more on the set list side of things, or general comments. But Rob is a serious musician, who, if I am remembering correctly, studied music formally. (Not that this is a prerequisite for being an MD type, but it sure helps.) I've always thought of Matt more like his dad: a great singer who can also play the basics on guitar, etc.
Then again, I may be wrong.
Regardless, I'm guessing it isn't Al doing the heavy lifting. So in that respect alone, is it "his" band or is it the band he's fronting?

It felt like Al was almost following a script at times. And, the keyboardist, whose name escapes him, helped keep Al's stories in check.
