Such as it is, anyway...
Presumably no significant copyright-related reissue this year, maybe just something minor for digital release. (Like "I'm Going Your Way," "Carnival (Over the Waves)" and an early "Slip On Through" for 1969, released digitally with no fanfare.)
Mike and Bruce with the reconfigured band will be out there doing what they do.
Al will presumably keep going with his low-key, occasional shows.
And that's about it. Unless we finally get that documentary. I propose they title it "Long Promised Doc."

I was thinking that this year marks the 50th anniversary of Endless Summer.
I know Sounds of Summer has somewhat rendered it obsolete, but given that ES plays a pretty significant role in Beach Boys history, I wonder if it will get some sort of reissue this year.

I'm sure Endless Summer will be commemorated in some way. I'm sure Mike thanks God every day for ES reviving his career. Maybe they can re-release it with the "proper" versions of Be True to Your School and Help Me, Rhonda included as bonus tracks.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they're already working on photos/graphics highlighting Endless Summer for the large screen at Mike & Bruce's 2024 concerts. They won't even have to tweak their setlist!
I agree with switching versions of "Help Me R(h)onda", but I wouldn't change "Be True To Your School". I'm probably in the minority but I prefer the less-busy, album version of "Be True To Your School" with the longer tag. And speaking of longer tags, what about "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "California Girls"? Endless Summer used the album versions of those two songs with the shorter - and I think inferior - fades/tags. Do you swap them out, too?
But, that raises a question. If you make too many changes, even if they are considered improvements, when does it stop becoming Endless Summer? They already added "Good Vibrations" to the CD version of Endless Summer (a great move by the way). The Endless Summer CD clocks in at 49:56. That leaves room for multiple bonus tracks. However, if you fill out Endless Summer with regular "summer" bonus tracks, does it become an alternate version of Sounds Of Summer? You would have competing CDs. I guess Capitol Records wouldn't care. Two top-selling comps are better than one.
This is just an oddball idea... by me. I don't know how many people are still buying Endless Summer. Probably much less are still buying Spirit If America. Maybe they could package the two in some kind of anniversary version/package at a budget price. But then you have to ask the question again: What's the point? I don't think they'll do it, but it wouldn't surprise me if they did.

I'm not even sure if ES is in print anymore.
I like the idea of adding the single versions as bonus tracks, but I'd keep the original running order intact.
I said this back when I mentioned Jimmy Buffett's original hits comp. These comps are throwbacks to when compilations were meant to be an intro to a band. They were usually album length, and thought was put into the running order. It wasn't cramming as many tracks as possible in chronological order.

Good Vibrations doesn't belong there - the original album only featured tracks from 1962-1965. 1966 and onwards was owned by Warner/Reprise/Brother at that point. Save GV for an anniversary release of Good Vibrations - Best of the Beach Boys in 2025, along with Spirit of America.

Save GV for an anniversary release of Good Vibrations - Best of the Beach Boys in 2025, along with Spirit of America. Capitol could - could - put out some expanded, 50th Anniversary, colored vinyl edition of Endless Summer for collectors, completists, and/or newbies with money to spend. They could keep the existing Endless Summer album (2 records/4 sides) and add a third record (6 sides total). They could also market a single, expanded CD version, too. With some strategy and creativity, they could stick with the pre-1966 material (except for "Good Vibrations"), bypass Pet Sounds again, and stay away from the Spirit Of America songs just in case they want to do something with that album. How about something like this:
The Beach Boys - Endless Summer (Expanded 50th Anniversary Edition)
Side 1 1. Surfin' Safari 2. Surfer Girl 3. Catch A Wave 4. The Warmth Of The Sun 5. Surfin' U.S.A.
Side 2 1. Be True To Your School 2. Little Deuce Coupe 3. In My Room 4. Shut Down 5. Fun, Fun, Fun
Side 3 1. I Get Around 2. Girls On The Beach 3. Wendy 4. Let Him Run Wild 5. Don't Worry Baby
Side 4 1. California Girls 2. Girl Don't Tell Me 3. Help Me Ronda 4. You're So Good To Me 5. All Summer Long
Side 5 1. Good Vibrations 2. Devoted To You
3. Car Crazy Cutie
4. In The Parking Lot 5. Your Summer Dream
Side 6 1. Surfer's Rule 2. Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow (Beach Boys' Party version)
3. Lonely Sea 4. Keep An Eye On Summer 5. Surfin'

I think anything they put out would be aimed at collectors and vinyl, because otherwise I don't think the costs of manufacturing and shipping would make much sense compared to likely sales. We have to keep in mind, streaming is king, with vinyl being the next biggest thing...and vinyl is currently expensive with presses apparently hard to come by.
That's also why I am not so sure they'd reissue Endless Summer, even though it was a monumental success. They've put out intended replacements for it within the past decade or so with MiC and 50 Big Ones, and then Sounds of Summer reissued less than two years ago. Is the market screaming "we need another [physical] Beach Boys hits compilation" right now? It would be so, so niche...

Is the market screaming "we need another [physical] Beach Boys hits compilation" right now? It would be so, so niche... I agree with you. The manufacturing costs, the popularity of streaming, and just basic demand (or lack of) for new Beach Boys' product would work against the idea. An expanded, anniversary Endless Summer certainly isn't necessary. There's too many comps out there anyway. I was just having fun with it (you know I'm obsessed with assembling comps ) - but I still wouldn't put it past Capitol, though we're already in 2024 and there hasn't been any news.

We sometimes give Mike's Beach Boys a hard time, either for not being the Beach Boys, or for Mike's habit of putting his foot in his mouth or just coming off as a bit of a jerk. But one thing I think deserves more appreciation is, I regularly see stories about the charity work the band does. Just this morning I saw that the band played at the "A Night For Sight" fundraiser for the Vision of Children Foundation (which aims to raise funds to cure hereditary blindness and genetic vision disorders in children). They raised $700,00 at the event. This is just one of many such things I stumble across every year. While I have a lot of gripes with Mike and that band, kudos for their charitable work. www.sandiegouniontribune.com/lifestyle/style-society/story/2024-01-04/the-vision-of-children-foundation

I love the idea of a year celebrating Endless Summer. Lots of cool things you could do to celebrate. I think a set that included the original running order with the mixes presented on the original release, as well as an expanded version with Atmos & stereo remixes and additional tracks. Or I would also be in favor of reissuing ES, Spirit of America, and Sunshine Dream all in one set. Yes this is definitely one theme for a tour that doesn’t require them to change the setlist all that much, or at all. I love the idea of the stage being dressed up to look the like the ES cover, or something along those lines… imagine if Mike & Bruce sported long hair bearded ‘ES looks’ again for this 😂😂 I’m excited. Should be a fun year. I think It also would be a good idea to release the new documentary in a tie in with the 50th anniversary of ES. The BBs’ summer still seems endless.

Or I would also be in favor of reissuing ES, Spirit of America, and Sunshine Dream all in one set. Considering the recent expanded version of Sounds of Summer, I can't really imagine any release happening beyond a straight reissue of Endless Summer, but this would be cool and not completely farfetched. It's pretty surprising that it didn't happen in the 80s or 90s. That said, I don't think there'll even be a reissue.

The Beach Boys FB Page just posted that the book The Beach Boys by The Beach Boys is available for preorder. The book, featuring the story told by Brian, Mike, Al, Bruce, and David, will be released in early April. The preorder price is $65 - far, far more reasonable than the autographed copy that was made available last year.

I still might hold out. Last fall, I snagged a copy of the Get Back coffee table book for $15 at Ollies.
