"Good Timin'" was not unanimous! That'll happen with mediocre songs. It made my list, but not by much. It's really overrated, imo.

I didn’t “discover” Dennis’ talent until the release of Feel Flows, which was after I joined this board. I think His melodies are as divine as Carl’s voice. Carl is the only one of the two who I dream about though. Okay, I didn't realize you were so new to "the Dennis thing". So would it be fair to say you prefer Dennis as a writer, and Carl as a singer? Exactly - though I love “Long Promised Road” and “Feel Flows”. Dennis may not have always finished songs, but he had a way with melodies. I will often just play “Mexico” over and over in my car. Just gorgeous. My first big foray into the Boys started with the purchase of the Good Vibrations box set in 2015 and discs two and three were sort of an obsession for several years. Not a ton of Dennis stuff on there. I received Feel Flows the day it was released and it was a revelation to me. I immediately found a copy of the 30th Anniversary Edition of Pacific Ocean Blue and went on a quest to obtain a 45 of “Sound of Free” (I have two now) and “River Song”. I don’t own any solo Carl stuff, though I can always listen to it on Apple Music. Still - If I’m watching random videos on You Tube, I seek out the one’s with Carl, more than Dennis. Truly the voice and the face of an angel.

I think Good Timin' sounds absolutely wonderful, but IMO, there's really not much of a song to it. That said, I would rate it more highly than Angel Come Home, which I'm a little surprised is the sole unanimous selection so far.

That is exactly how I feel about "Good Timin." Where's the song?
"Angel Come Home" took me years, but I like it more and more.

I don't understand the (mild) criticism of "Good Timin'". It has a verse and a chorus. There's a lot of songs that only have a verse and a chorus. Now, I will admit that I wish the song had some kind of intro, though it wasn't essential. And, I suppose a bridge might've been nice, too, though that wasn't essential either. The song is relatively short (2:12) for a late 70s single and that might've hurt it as a single.
All of that being said, what IS there is tremendous, and I think there is more than enough for a great Beach Boys' song. "Good Timin'" has that undeniable Brian Wilson stamp, and you can just feel it without even knowing anything about the credits. The magic was still there. Actually, it was one of the last BW songs that contained his magic, IMO of course. Carl's vocal is crystal clear and perfectly fine. The lyrics, while simple, are also fine. They effectively get that "celebrating the joy of every day life" message across to the listener. You might also find the lyrics a little deeper ("you need good timin'") in the context of the Beach Boys' story. But, the shining moments are the guys' harmonies. They're back and I give Bruce credit where credit is due. He got that Beach Boys' sound back again after a few albums where the group struggled to get that feel. "Good Timin'" reached No. 40 on Billboard (No. 33 on Cash Box) which wasn't too shabby at a time when the group was frustrated in getting more hits after "Rock And Roll Music". I have no problem designating "Good Timin'" as an all-timer.
I find "Angel Come Home" to be overrated. The song, especially the verses, drag slightly. Dennis is very hoarse. He's not terrible (and some might find his vocal emotional) but I don't find it as effective as his Pacific Ocean Blue vocals. The lyrics or song concept is fine; I like that. As I mentioned in my comments above, I think better production and maybe another/a better lead vocal would've helped. Like most of the songs on L.A. (Light Album), the song could've used more LIFE! It drags in places, and the tag, which could be a real highlight needs to rock more. It just feels like it wants to break loose but never really does. It's kind of a frustrating recording actually.

On "Good Timin," I just don't hear it. I read your explanations, but I just don't hear it or agree. The best part is probably just the falsetto melody in the group vocals, and it just sounds like a variation on "Surfer Girl." It's funny that you're wanting life and rock from "Angel Come Home" (and LA) when a person could just as well be said about "Good Timin." I don't think "Angel Come Home" requires more oompf, because that's just not the song it is. It's a slow, hungover kind of funk about somebody left alone. It's not going to be "I Get Around"!

If “Good Timin’” had been released in 1971, it wouldn’t even have sniffed the top ten. I do like it, and I don’t skip it, but it’s not on the level of earlier stuff. “Angel Come Home” sounds better live because it picks up more energy live. One of the reasons I love disco “HCTN” is because that song has a lot of energy and makes me want to dance. L.A. is kind of mellow, like Friends, but half as good. It’s still good though, unlike M.I.U. Not sure what The Boys were thinking there. I do remember some 50’s nostalgia push just after 1976. I remember wearing a poodle skirt to school. I think that was over by 1978 though.

I think both Angel Come Home and Good Timin' are a little overrated to a certain extent. I like them both, but I really don't listen to either all that much.

If Carl had sung Angel Come Home, it might have sounded more like this. Well, Carl wrote it, not Dennis, so it was a little odd that Carl didn't sing it. Carl already sang lead on 6 of the 10 songs on L.A. (Light Album) and maybe Carl/Bruce/the group thought that 6 was enough. 7 might've put it over the top and made it sound more like a CW solo album. Keepin' The Summer Alive has a similar feel in this area.
