Yesterday at the grocery store: Halloween candy displays. How does that make you feel, KDS? Aug. 31... I wish the stores near me had such restraint. I've been seeing Halloween displays for six weeks. It almost feels Halloweeny this morning. About 62 degrees with a breeze. But, we have a bit of a heat wave coming Monday. We're doing our last summer Ocean City trip this weekend. Its weird that it could be too cool to swim tomorrow (high is 75), but we'll be coming home to the high 90s on Labor Day, the unofficial last day of summertime.

We're back from our Labor Day Weekend beach trip.
This trip marks the end of an era as my son's about to outgrow the Kiddie Rides at the Ocean City Boardwalk Amusement Park.
We're now in the "kneeling on the football" portion of summer.
Right now, its nearly 9pm, 84 and very humid. We're due to be in the high 90s this week before cooling to the low 80s for the weekend.

Today we're (hopefully) in the last day of a mini-heat wave that lasted just a bit longer than Labor Day weekend, with the days up just below 100 and the nights staying in the mid 70s. Yesterday was a record for Sept. 4, 98 degrees, and right now it's 78. Not the most pleasant way to spend a long weekend, honestly, mostly indoors with air conditioning.
A lot of kids start school today, and it'll be in the 90s for hopefully the last time. I feel bad for those whose schools don't have air conditioning, as is true of many of the older schools.

Maybe worse than the heat in those old schools is the general stickiness on most things you touch. I always felt like I needed to wash my hands after touching the stair railing or door. Of course a few years after I graduated, they finally installed air conditioning. Being further east, we still have a couple days to go on our heat wave. Then mostly mid to uppers 70s for at least the next two weeks. My favorite kind of weather.

Looks like it’s going to be 98 here today, then the temperature drops into the mid to upper 80’s the rest of the week. Still, no rain in the forecast until next Monday. I don’t want to see our water bill.
KCMO schools let out early all last week because of the heat. I think most of the schools are air conditioned, but the buses are not.
I remember that sticky feeling in my old grade schools. We called time and temperature as often as we could around 11:00 in the morning, because if it was 83 by then, we got out of school early.

My school--a depression-era building--didn't have air conditioning, but I don't recall it ever being that bad.
It was football practice, which began in mid-August, that was the killer in terms of heat. A week of 4.5-hour practices, then a week of two 2.5-hour practices before school began, at which point it went to the single, after-school practice. Those August practices were the worst. (This was the tail end of the "water breaks are for weaklings" era...)
But I don't recall school itself being that hot--though it must have been. Guess I was young and oblivious.

I never experienced AC in a classroom until college.
I do remember some warm days towards the end of the school year. I can't recall any at the beginning. Although, we went back after Labor Day. And, I could be misremembering, but I don't recall it being hot and humid most Septembers.

Our heat wave finally broke: the temps are actually dropping this morning, from 66 when I woke up to 64 now and 61 or so being the forecasted low this morning. It feels wonderful after the past 4-5 days! I was able to open the windows and give the AC a break. Beautiful (though dry) weather throughout the 10-day forecast.
I wonder if our days of 90+ are through. Sometimes we still get those days into September and October, but if we have a 10-day stretch mostly in the 70s, I don't know how likely that is. I'd be more than OK with those warm, not hot, days from here on out.

Looking at the long range forecast, I think we're in the midst of our last blast of summer heat and humidity. After Thursday, the next week and a half sees highs in the high 70s to mid 80s.
As much as I love heat and humidity, I like more typical September weather. Still warm enough to wear shorts, but not so hot that my Year 20 AC is running continuously.

Went out on the deck tonight right at 8p. It was still very humid. Mid 80s. Now, there's a cool breeze blowing, and some lightning in the distance.

Tonight we're supposed to get down to about 45 degrees. As hot as it has been lately (and we're supposed to be up over 80 by tomorrow afternoon), once we're below 50 overnight, that's when it does seem like fall. This thread may be approaching its end!

In Baltimore, especially in recent years, summer often does not go gently into that good night.
This year has been no exception. After a fairly mild summer by out standards, we had our hottest days after Labor Day. Even though the highs are down to the mid 80s, the humidity has remained.
We're actually having a pretty busy thunderstorm right now. And this storm could break the trend of humid weather.
Highs will be in the high 70s / low 80s for the official rest of summer, but the nights will be cooler. And it looks like the highs in the high 70s / low 80s will last at least into the first days of fall next weekend.

Despite our cool night--and sure enough, it's 45 degrees right now--we're not quite done with summer either. We'll be back into the 80s tomorrow, and the mid 80s early next week. But the downward temp trend seems to be begun.
