We're coming home from the beach today. Last night, it actually got fairly cool, for late August at least, with temps dipping into the mid 60s. Those cool breezes and the upcoming week's back to school duties (school starts the week of the 28th, but my wife always starts a week early for class prep, and my son has two back to school events) really makes it feel like summer in waning. We're looking at two weeks of temps mostly in the mid to high 90s, sometimes teasing the 100s, and with a handful of nights not going to drop below 75. So it's going to feel as much like summer in the latter third of August as it has all season long. But with the shorter days and falling acorns (and even leaves), not to mention teacher-friends getting back to work and school sales all full swing, it definitely is also feeling like fall in a way.

Now that I have a son in school, there are extra layers to summer ending.
Prior to his starting PreK two years ago, the start of the school year really didn't affect me too much. And, I didn't feel that "summer's coming to an end" feeling so much on August 21. As I alluded to before, I used to vacation in mid September, so late August was met with excitement (and I swear back then, stores weren't so fast to go into Halloween / Fall mode). And, even after I stopped doing that trip, I really didn't feel that "summer ending" feeling until mid September.
But, now, this week, my wife returns to her class to set up. We have two Back to School events this week to attend at my son's school.
Next Monday, my son starts Kindergarten, and since I handle drop off duty, I have to amend my work schedule. My wife's students also return to class.
Then, we'll do our last summertime beach trip for Labor Day Weekend.
After that, we still get a few more weeks of summer technically, but those late summer September days just don't have the same vibe as June, July, and the first 2/3 of August.

We're looking at triple-digit temps today, or at least the very high 90s. (We'll have to see.) It's already 75 and 93% humidity, and it only gets worse from here. Similar day tomorrow and hotter temps overnight--I've seen an overnight low of 80!
I'll be thanking my lucky stars for air conditioning the next few days.

The feel like temp has been between 120 and 130 here the last few days. I was watering my plants at 5 AM this morning and was already sweating within a couple of minutes as it was 80 with 97% humidity. When you step outside, it feels like you are stepping into an oven. The actual temperature for the next few days is predicted to be between 101 and 103, with dew points in the 80’s. I don’t ever remember feeling weather hotter than this.

Sounds similar to--but slightly worse than--us. And this is one time I definitely don't feel the need to win! I had a very similar experience this morning: 80 degrees at 5:30 a.m., very humid. My glasses fogged up badly the second I stepped outside to water the plants. I saw 99 officially yesterday, not sure whether we topped 100, but the heat index was certainly above 100. Today is supposed to be similar, and tomorrow just a little better (low to mid 90s). Then we get some relief with more typical summer temps. I'd rather have it be 30 below zero (though not in August!) than 100, myself. Well, maybe. That's lose-lose.

It will be 101, but the dew point will drop to 65, so the heat index will “only” be 105 to 115. 🥵 Unlike you, I still prefer this to below zero weather.

We had a hot one today. Got into the low 90s. Sometimes late August will drop a day or two on us just to remind us that its still summer.
Tomorrow and Sunday will be in the mid to high 80s. I'm meeting some old friends (SB and RB if you followed by Sounds of Summer thread) for lunch tomorrow, then grilling dinner later.

OK, kds, I think it was a couple of weeks later than on your end, but today I saw the first Oktoberfest beer on the shelves. Didn't seem like they were all stocked yet, but at least one brand was up on display. And actually, with just a breezy 69-degree, partly sunny morning, it almost feels like fall--especially considering we're coming off a week of ~100-degree highs! (It sure is nice having the windows open and AC resting.)

I was happy to see a Sam Adams Summer Sampler pack when I went to the liquor store yesterday. I cracked that open as I sit on the deck, waiting to light the grill to make burgers and hot dogs one last time.

A brisk walk in 55-degree temps was just the way to kick off the day. Downright chilly, by some people's reckoning. I can't ask for more than cool mornings and warm (around 80 is the forecast) afternoons.
Well, OK, I could ask for a little more rain...but let's not be greedy. For nice weather to fall on a weekend is a treat.

Just finished cutting the grass. I'm finishing up my Sam Adams summer sampler. In all likelihood, I'm currently drinking my last summer seasonal of 2023.

We're into the big topic of late summer around here: the Minnesota State Fair. (Yes, I think this is a very Midwestern sort of thing.) It takes place in St. Paul, and for most Minnesotans, it's a big deal. City dwellers, out-staters, out-of-staters, huge numbers of people attend every year. (More than 200,000 people attended just on Saturday.)
And me?
I never go. I don't enjoy anything about it, except theoretically some musical performances. (They do get surprisingly good acts for a state fair. This year includes the Black Keys, the [ex-Dixie] Chicks, Keith Urban, Chaka Khan, the Happy Together tour, Brandi Carlile, Yung Gravy, Duran Duran, the Jonas Bros, and the Hold Steady.) Heat. Crowds. Parkin hassles. Overpriced gimmicky foods (everything on a stick and/or deep fried!). No thank you.
But it's on everyone's lips. I went for a haircut Saturday. My stylist--of course--asked if I'd yet been or was going, and was a little shocked when I said no. Then she and the rest of the place all got into one big discussion about what they like about the fair. When they go, what they eat, what they like to see, etc. I swear, I am the one person in this state who doesn't go and doesn't care. It seems everyone else in this state cares about nothing else the last week or so of August up through Labor Day.

The Maryland State Fair is going on too. It used to start the weekend prior to Labor Day, and run each day until Labor Day.
But, with kids in school the week before Labor Day, it now runs on weekends, the weekend before Labor Day, Labor Day Weekend, and the weekend after.
I have probably gone three times in my life. Twice since my son was born as he likes the rides. Other than the live music by big name acts (not included with fair admission BTW), there's not a ton that we can't get from a smaller carnival. Our fair doesn't even have a ton of that gimmicky over the top fair food.

Yesterday at the grocery store: Halloween candy displays. How does that make you feel, KDS? Aug. 31...
