If Bruce retires, will Mike try to bring back David or Alan?

Scott Totten has left The Beach Boys. This was posted on his Facebook page: A NEW CHAPTER Well friends after nearly 23 years I have performed my last shows with The Beach Boys. It has been a dream come true for me to play those amazing songs night after night, year after year for all the great fans out there. I’m very proud of the work I did to honor the musical legacy of The Beach Boys – with the help of my bandmates Brian Eichenberger, Tim Bonhomme, Keith Hubacher, Randy Leago, Christian Love and especially John Cowsill. Also the great BB crew - Swifty, Tara Ricart, Mike Czaszwicz, John Bracken and Adam Richter. I want to thank Mike Love and Jacquelyne Love for the many opportunities and experiences my family and I have had during my tenure. Many of you don’t know that I actually started touring in 1993 with the show TOMMY, so after 30 years I’m looking forward to being a bigger part of my family’s lives, and for my next adventure, big or small. I hope we cross paths again.
There is also a rumor that John Cowsill has left the band but I am unable to find any confirmation on that.

Wow, big news.
SJS, would that have affected your decision to buy tickets for the Beach Boys show in September?

Wow, big news. SJS, would that have affected your decision to buy tickets for the Beach Boys show in September? Thanks for asking, B.E. At first, yes, I was bummed. I always enjoyed Scott and John's contributions. But, upon further thought, I'm now intrigued as to who the "new" members are, and more importantly, how they sound and fit in with the blend.
I should mention that the last few years I've been going to see The Beach Boys and Brian Wilson, it's also been an excuse to see the "Beach Boys gang" - people who I've known since high school - again for a nice dinner, good conversation, and some bad singing in the car to and from the show.

Tough news. Scott is who made the shows as great as they've been over the years and John brought a lot of energy to the show. They'll be missed for sure. I wonder if there's any chance someone from Brian's band would come over.

I wonder if there's any chance someone from Brian's band would come over. Considering the likelihood that there is no longer any real need for a Brian Wilson Band, that is an interesting thought. Yet the politics are always of interest. The drumming equivalent is Mike D'Amico? He's been pretty Team Brian, as a Wondermint. And there really isn't even an equivalent to Totten. The bandleader sort of role could be considered something like Darian Sahanaja had, but he has been in and out anyway, and obviously as a keyboardist versus guitarist, it's not quite equivalent. But the guitarist equivalent might be Rob Bonfliglio, and it's hard imagining Carnie's husband joining Mike Love's Beach Boys. It could be a very interesting near future.

This is very disappointing, but it doesn't appear the group is coming to my area this year, so I will stand on the sidelines and wait for reports. It's not encouraging, though. I wonder if Mike will try to bring David back? I would welcome that.

I wonder if Mike will try to bring David back? I would welcome that. I don't think that would fulfill the musical hole that Totten's absence leaves. Guitarwise, yes, but vocally, no. And in terms of being a bandleader, also no. I would think that despite playing different instruments, Marks would be more likely a replacement if Bruce should retire, for authenticity purposes. Not musical ones.

As I was thinking of a possible replacement for Scott, I thought about The Eagles after Glenn Frey passed away. They did recruit Glenn's son, Deacon, for touring, but he left shortly thereafter to pursue a solo career. Then they went high profile by recruiting Vince Gill on guitar and vocals. That really added a lot to the live shows.
I know it's a long shot, but I'd like to see The Beach Boys go a little high(er) profile, too. They probably won't do it because of the money (though Scott was probably paid more than the a typical sideman), and it probably wouldn't significantly affect ticket sales. But, it would give the band a shot in the arm (not that they necessarily need it; just ask Mike ), and it would give them some versatility...and free publicity. How about Christopher Cross?

Brian Eichenberger's LinkedIn profile now says musical director for the Beach Boys. There's also a rumor that Jon Bolton will be on the drums. jonbolton.net/

So glad I got to see John drum with the boys twice in the past year. I’d love to see him play with his family in the future. I’d pay and travel to see that. In my case it is his absence more than Scott Totten’s that will make me think twice in the future about purchasing Beach Boys tickets. Scott did an swesome job however, running a very tight band. I get it though. Heck, at my age, I’m wondering how much longer I can keep doing my job, and John is 6 years older than me and Scott is surely older than me.I don’t know how Mike and Bruce do it.

John is a great drummer and musician, but I think it's worth noting how much the band improved under Scott's leadership. He raised the bar to the point that this band was at least competitive with Brian's then-far-more lauded band. Ike is a great musician, too. But it'll be interesting to see how a new group coalesces. (Making Ike new musical director doesn't replace Scott as a guitarist and singer, after all.)
If I were Mike, I can't really imagine semi-starting over in my 80s. But he has made clear he plans to keep at it while he can, so...I guess we'll see how it goes.
