Did any of our football fans happen to check out any of the weekend's XFL action? If so, thoughts?

I tuned in briefly, and was surprised to see Jerry Glanville coaching for the NY team.
I just can't get into it.

Jerry Glanville! Wow, how old is he!?
Although I was about the same: noticed it was on, tuned in ... and turned it. In my younger days I got excited for offseason leagues--I watched a TON of the WLAF in the early 90s, and was a big fan of the Orlando Thunder for some reason in particular--but now I think my standards are just much higher. It either needs to be really high level football (which this isn't) or I need a rooting interest. So I think I'll be passing on the XFL.

77 according to the broadcasters. That's where I am too. The talent level can't match the NFL, and without a Baltimore team, it's very "meh." Plus, this time of year tends to me by sports down time. Football's over, and baseball is still a little less than two months away.

Yeah, I think my football fix will come from U of MN spring camp and the NFL draft. I don't need year-round football anymore, and especially not from a bunch of not-quite-good-enough players.

Same as you guys. I knew it was on. Tuned in. Lasted about one series. And ended up watching Lethal Weapon on cable. I don't need the NFL twelve months of the year. Now is the time for basketball.

The NFLPA will soon be voting for the proposed new CBA, which included a 17 week regular reason and an additional playoff team in each conference. The NFL has a perfect format, and they're looking to screw it up.

Adding games in the most violent team sport, a sport in which we're already often losing guys to injuries, is insane. And adding playoff teams when we already have mediocre teams making it almost every season... I don't like it.

You gotta love the league that preaches "player safety" yet promotes Thursday Night Football and an expanded season. This will dilute the product.

I feel like somewhat of a hypocrite when I discuss this issue. Do I think it's a good idea to eliminate one preseason game? Sure. Do you want to give me an extra regular season game - more football? Sure again. Do you want to give more teams - maybe MY TEAM - a better chance at making the playoffs? OK. And, do you want to extend the season through more of February, prime time for watching sports on TV? Yes!
So what's the problem? I agree with you guys ^. This goes against everything the league has been preaching about "player safety". Head trauma is only going to get more concerning. Check out the injury lists on some of these teams; it reaches double digits in some cases. Yes, it will dilute the quality of the playoff teams/season. And, I agree with what Mark Cuban was saying a few years ago. The NFL is moving toward overexposure. Thursday games, Saturday games (in December), Sunday morning games (overseas), Sunday night games. Monday night games.
I also read that they were toying with these special rules where each player has to sit out one game, or something like that. That would be a clown-like rule. A joke. Tell Patrick Mahomes that a back-up left tackle will be protecting his back while the starting left tackle is sitting out a game because he has to.
Again, you wanna give me more football? Sure, what fan wouldn't. But I think the overriding factor for me is the old cliche' - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Especially since we know--from basketball--what the response from teams is going to be: more players sitting out more games to either nurse minor injuries or even prevent wear and tear. Another game, great! Oh, Kirk Cousins, Adam Thielen, Danielle Hunter, and Dalvin Cook are sitting out? Great...

I think the product is getting diluted. We already have TNF, which is a pretty awful product with players on short rest. I also believe you can have too much of a good thing. One of the things I like about the NFL is its the only league that really leaves you wanting more. The season is very brisk. I like that. Also, we've seen plenty of 7-9, 8-8, and 9-7 teams make the postseason in the current format. Do we really want to open the door for an extra team per conference?

I think the product is getting diluted. We already have TNF, which is a pretty awful product with players on short rest. With Thursday Night Football, regardless of the product being diluted and the players performing on short rest, the worst part or the riskiest part is, because of the lack of sufficient time to rest and recover, the players are at even more risk of being injured, or re-injured.
