I just woke up to big NFL news. After a nine year NFL career, a great receiver announced his retirement. Yes, Ex-Philadelphia Eagle Jeremy Maclin is hanging up his spikes!
Oh, and so is Rob Gronkowski.

It has been a somewhat quiet offseason so far for MN, mostly resigning some key contributors and losing a few others...but not much in the way of new acquisitions. Maybe the draft will help. Our OL is embarrassing.

I wish the Eagles would've picked up Latavius Murray. I think he's pretty good. I was surprised he went to the Saints who already have Alvin Kamara. The Vikings better hope Dalvin Cook stays healthy.

Oh, and so is Rob Gronkowski. Maclin was still active? He seemed to quit halfway though his stint in Baltimore.

Murray was a godsend for us, especially two seasons ago. I liked him quite a bit, especially in the context of a one-two punch of complements. Big, strong, and with enough burst to pick up some 15-20 yard runs now and again even though he's no Cook. I also don't know that he's an every-down, full-time back, which might make the Saints signing make more sense.

The Eagles traded for Chicago RB Jordan Howard for a 6th (that could turn into a 5th Round) 2020 draft pick. Yes! I love it. A perfect fit.

Good. He has averaged 90.8 ypg on 4.7 ypc against the Vikings...

Happy Trails to the AAF! We hardly knew ya. I tried watching it. It was pretty awful. I just channel-surfed right past it; never stopped to watch it. I have a friend who said it wasn't that bad, but his standards are probably lower than mine. I just don't think another professional football league can survive on TV. The AAF tried to market their league (partly) as "the NFL's minor league", but hey, who wants to watch/follow a minor league? There is no national TV coverage for the NBA's developmental league or MLB's minor league.

There is no national TV coverage for the NBA's developmental league or MLB's minor league. It was on a couple Saturday nights, so I gave it a shot. Personally, I think the overall talent level in the 32 team NFL is sort of thin, so it's to be expected that the talent for the AAF wouldn't be very good, but I thought that maybe when an even playing field that the games would at least be entertaining. They were not. And I'd expect the same when the XFL Version 2.0 comes around next year.

Any Kansas City Chiefs' fans out there? The NFL is going to have some very difficult decisions to make, as are the Chiefs.

Not a Chiefs fan, but I read a story on the issue. Yikes. Honestly I wished the Vikings would have cut Adrian Peterson when his child abuse allegations came out. He never did really appropriately respond, in my book: basically just said that what he did is what his parents did, and so it was fine. (It involved hitting his kid with tree branches hard enough to break the skin, including his kid's scrotum and butt. Not OK in my opinion--and I'm not necessarily opposed to some spanking.)
In happier news, the Vikes drafted an offensive lineman! Thank goodness. It has only been a glaring need for, oh, about half a decade.

I don't really want to comment on the job NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is doing, or his $40+ million dollar per year salary , but how would you like to have his job? Every morning he comes into his office, meets with his top assistant, and gets the following rundown: this player was arrested for beating his wife, this player pled not guilty to slapping somebody at a nightclub, this player was arrested yesterday for child abuse, this player tested positive for the third time for using PEDs, this player was stopped for a DUI and resisting arrest, and on and on.
The league has taken steps, significant steps to address these types of issues. But that's just the start. Things are going to get very complicated with the Players' Association, the lawyers, the owners - and the fans.

"and the fans." That's one very interesting development: I think that a big part of this crackdown is coming because the NFL has put forth a lot of effort in the past 10 years or so to market to women. It has worked, with "Sunday funday" being a part of many young women's vocabularies (at least around my office); they incorporate brunches, fantasy football, and friend-group get-togethers into the football experience at a rate that astounds me when I think of my childhood or even young adulthood.
But I think the combination of more female fans' attention plus the general societal changes have made us more aware of those off-the-field issues, and less tolerant of them.
Honestly I am never quite sure how much of it the league should get into, versus just referring everything to law enforcement. If it were my league, I'd prefer to let the authorities handle things at that level.
