Apropos of nothing, it just popped into my head: remember the great new documentary that was to be a part of the big 60th anniversary? Yeah, me, too. I wonder when we're going to see or hear something concrete about its release ... perhaps in time for the 75th? I hope the anthology style book isn't what we're getting instead of a doc.

Would the documentary production be impacted by the current US TV/film writer's strike?

Would the documentary production be impacted by the current US TV/film writer's strike? I would think depending on where it was in the process, and when. But that only began this past late spring/early summer, right? So if it were still in the stages requiring writers' participation (or earlier than those stages). You'd hope that if it were intended for 2022, it would be past that by now, and more about distribution or something. But maybe?

Ha, I saw that yesterday and thought about posting it. But like you said, it's nothing earth-shattering (or even definitive, other than that it's still apparently on the way), so I didn't.
Maybe it is finished, though: Love says he doesn't know when it's going to air, but he doesn't say it's not done. (Contrast to when Al said some time ago that he hadn't even been interviewed yet.) So maybe it'll be sooner than later? It would be nice if it were before the 65th anniversary, anyway...

Definitely nothing groundbreaking, but its nice to hear the doc get a mention, and know it still exists.
I just hope this doesn't turn into a repeat of the 50th Anniversary doc that just wound up being - Doin It Again.

In the Forbes' article, Mike Love says, "There's a documentary coming out on The Beach Boys. I don't know when it's set to air. But we're definitely getting together for that." Can somebody please interpret that statement for me?
Mike says, "There's a documentary coming out on The Beach Boys." Does that mean it's finished and "coming out"? Then Mike says, "I don't know when it's set to air." Does that mean it's already finished because he's already talking about when it will air? Finally, Mike says "But we're definitely getting together for that." What does that mean? So, they didn't get together yet, but they're definitely going to, for the documentary? Or, they will be getting together... after the documentary is finished? Why? And when exactly? I'm confused.

Exactly. The one thing that might help the new doc is, unlike when Doin It Again was released, there's nothing new to promote.

I interpreted the first two sentences as being ambiguous. I think they might mean the documentary is complete, or they might mean the project is still ongoing. But as I mentioned above, I did think that the "set to air" comment implied it is completed. It seems like something you think about once a project is completed--but to be fair, it might just mean that it's not done and so (obviously) he doesn't know when it will air. As for the getting together, I'm sure it's going to be something like a premiere ceremony or something, some P.R. for the project. The kind of "reunion" this band has been mostly known for the past couple decades, the kind of reunion that doesn't require a (musical) reunion. Just go somewhere fancy, sit alongside one another, pretend to be close friends, answer a few questions with well-rehearsed lines about being family, the harmony that goes along with it, and so on.

If that's what they decide on, it will be a major disappointment and a disaster. We already know what they'll say...and not say.

I'm not expecting anything now. The 60th came and went. The next big anniversary is the 60th anniversary of Pet Sounds. I'm sure we'll get another box set to mark that occasion.

I'm still moderately optimstistic about the documentary itself. No, I don't have any expectations whatsoever for whatever "getting together" Mike is talking about in that interview. But I'm hopeful that the documentary will be a quality piece of work, hopefully a longer, multipart thing like some of the other major band/artist docs we've seen since the streaming era began and things weren't confined mostly to network television. (Now watch, it'll be a one-hour doc made for network TV--so true running time will be 42 minutes or so--and it will be mostly old footage!)
