AUGUST 2 Home alone, five musical hopefuls put all their food money into renting instruments to rehearse in 1961 I'm still looking for that elusive photo of the 1961 Beach Boys with Al Jardine (before David Marks joining).

I know that's how things went in those days before bands broke big, but can you imagine having had the Beach Boys performing at your prom? (Or during prom week, anyway.) Or along the same lines 10 years later, Van Halen playing your backyard party?

AUGUST 2 Home alone, five musical hopefuls put all their food money into renting instruments to rehearse in 1961 Say no more! I've been reliably informed that this date is way off! I suppose you shouldn't believe everything you read in a diary. I've changed it accordingly.

I saw it the night it aired. I loved it but was also perplexed by it. I was still very much a newbie and this was the first extensive visual exposure I had of the band. Obviously parts were jarring, especially the scenes with Brian in them. But, oh, how it fueled my enthusiasm and made me even more curious.
I have asked this question a few times on a few message boards, and I never got an answer, not even a speculation. On the band's performance of "It's OK" (an excellent version btw), they reversed/transposed the lines "gotta go to it, gotta go through it, gotta get with it" to "gotta get with it, gotta go to it, gotta go through it". The question? Simply, why? I never heard it performed that way before or since.

AUGUST 7 This day declared as "Al Jardine Day" by Lima, Ohio, Alan's birth place, in 1991 The curious thing is that I can only find this information on AGD's Bellagio site. That said, I wasn't looking for confirmation anywhere else, just a possible picture to post here.

In this August 7, 1991, photo from the Lima News, Al Jardine of the Beach Boys takes a break with his family while touring the Lima Locomotive Works on South Main Street, where his father once worked as a photographer. With Jardine were his wife, Mary Ann (left), twins Robbie and Drew, who were 5 years old at the time, and child-care worker Laura Brannon. The Beach Boys performed a benefit concert later that day at the Allen County Fairgrounds.

Wow -- nice find, Sheriff! No mention of 7 August as Al Jardine Day though...

That "child-care worker" (for some reason that term in this situation, as opposed to "nanny" or "babysitter," strikes me as unnatural and funny) does not seem particularly impressed by the Lima Locomotive Works!

Simply one of the most underrated songs in the catalogue. Not performed, didn't appear on (many?) comps, rarely discussed...but it's a classic! Not many Brian Wilson vocals possessed the emotion of his vocal on "She Knows Me Too Well". The track is ALL Beach Boys. And, it should've closed the Today! album.

I ask because The Beach Boys' performance on the show was actually in (October?) 1965.
