The previous single, "Ten Little Indians", clocked in at 1:30, and "Shut Down" at 1:50. That's back-to-back singles that barely cracked three minutes...combined! Those were the days.

A fine little song, but I have to admit that if this were the path they stayed on, I wouldn't really even be a fan. They'd just be among the hundreds of songs I would recognize and kinda like.

JUNE 27 Bruce Johnston born 1942; Pet Sounds released in the UK where it will reach #2 Happy 81st Birthday to Bruce Johnston! And seeing which album was released this day in 1966, this track fits the bill rather nicely (wait for the tag!):

Was that it? Just a three-hour session? "Sloop" is one of my favorite tracks. Love the instruments Brian used and the overall sound he produced.

JULY 20 Brian achieves his first chart-topping composition in 1963 with Jan & Dean's "Surf City", much to Murry's chagrin
I'd only known Jan & Dean from the gloriously off-key "Heart And Soul" and was bowled over by this new sound: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surf_City_(song)

Oh, I'm sure Murry was...chagrinned. Do you think he was the only one? Maybe Capitol Records, maybe another Beach Boy or two. I mean, it's not every day one rock & roll star hands over a No. 1 song to another (soon-to-be) rock & roll star, their competition - and sings on it, too! A different time indeed.

That's fascinating and completely escaped me. I've never seen it discussed on a Beach Boys' message board - or anywhere!
