Here from 3:09: Oh, and thanks, Sheriff John Stone , for the information about Alan in Lima. jk, just for clarification, was that Andy Williams Show episode only broadcast in the UK in 1967? I ask because The Beach Boys' performance on the show was actually in (October?) 1965. Yes, 22 October 1965 according to AGD's site, which presumably means the date it was recorded. I checked Badman and that's where the 1967 UK date came from: "broadcast in colour NBC May 2nd 1966, 9:00–10:00pm, BBC-2 (UK) August 11th 1967, 9:05–9:55pm". I've scoured the net from end to end for confirmation, to no avail -- nothing at all about a UK broadcast in 1967 or any other year. But I did find confirmation of Badman's US broadcast ( here). I'll leave the calendar entry in place for the time being...

I love "Look" aka "I Ran" aka "Song For Children".
It's not one of the big bombers on SMiLE, but if there were a 2nd Tier, "Look" would be up near the top of it. For years, I toyed with where to place it in my mix. Its placement in-between "Wonderful" and "Child Is Father Of The Man" is one of the only things I like about BWPS, and who knows if it was originally intended to be there.

I do prefer Al's mix/version but I think, overall, The Beach Boys' "Cotton Fields" is overrated. I've always been surprised, out of all the songs that could've been covered by the group, "Cotton Fields" was approved. What's even more perplexing is that "Cotton Fields" peaked at #103 in the U.S. but reached #5 in the U.K.
Trivia..."Cotton Fields" was the last Beach Boys' single released on Capitol Records (at the time) and the last Beach Boys' single released in mono.

AUGUST 19 Stack-o-Tracks, a pre-karaoke-era sing-and-play-it-yourself package, released in 1968 "Salt Lake City" in particular was a real ear-opener for me in the early 2000s:

AUGUST 22 David Lee Marks born 1948 in Erie, Pennsylvania; "Wipeout" (a surprise UK #2) enters the UK charts in 1987
Two events marking two eras in Beach Boys history... Happy 75th Birthday to David, whose finest hour in my book was his guitar work with Carl on Surfin' U.S.A..

Two events marking two eras in Beach Boys history... Happy 75th Birthday to David, whose finest hour in my book was his guitar work with Carl on Surfin' U.S.A.. I always found it interesting that, despite the numerous changes in the Beach Boys' band and Brian Wilson's band over the last 50+ years, David Marks never returned on a more permanent basis. Also, I never knew David was born in Erie, Pennsylvania!

AUGUST 23 Blondie gives "Wild Honey" his all on Boston Common in 1972 Not Boston Common perhaps but the rest is certainly true:

AUGUST 23 Blondie gives "Wild Honey" his all on Boston Common in 1972 I've always found it interesting that they/Carl turned over the lead vocal to Blondie in concert. Other than Brian's lead vocals (for obvious reasons), that didn't happen often. Oh, and I have no problem with Blondie singing it. He does a great job.

Oh, and I have no problem with Blondie singing it. He does a great job. By all accounts, Carl had an amazing time with those high notes during the recording session but may well have thought "okay, enough's enough". So I don't blame him for passing it on to someone who was very much at home in those upper reaches.

So I don't blame him for passing it on to someone who was very much at home in those upper reaches. Not only is it very high, but Carl had a lot of other heavy lifting (vocally speaking, not to mention as musical director for the band) throughout the shows. So I can understand it. The guy would also have been doing Darlin, GOK, parts of Good Vibrations, Wonderful, and whatever-else during shows in that era. I totally get not wanting to overdo it on a very taxing song.

AUGUST 27 "God Only Knows" peaks at #2 in the UK; it would get no higher than #39 in the US a month later Kept from #1 by "Yellow Submarine"/"Eleanor Rigby". The roles would be reversed in the UK's end-of-year NME Awards, when the Boys took over from The Beatles as #1 in the World Vocal Group category.

Why didn't someone--Mike Love, perhaps?--ever mention this through these past 55+ years!?

AUGUST 27 "God Only Knows" peaks at #2 in the UK; it would get no higher than #39 in the US a month later I really didn't remember "God Only Knows" back in the day, on the radio or otherwise. I mean, I...vaguely recognized it...when I heard it, but it certainly wasn't ingrained like a lot of other hits from that era. It was only when I became a newbie in the mid/late 1970s did I realize its greatness.
