What the heck - another big dose of love for Love You. What am I missing? What tracks should I love from that album, because I can’t find any. Wikipedia I think described it as The Beach Boys “Punk” album and I was like - I’m going to love it! Then I was like - yeah - not so much. Yes for Friends in the A tier though! Sunflower and Wild Honey B tier? Ok - maybe a few weak tracks, but dang Sunflower has “This Whole World” and “All I Wanna Do” and dang those are some of my favorite Beach Boys songs. Overall though - Really good rankings. I don't think you're missing anything, really. It's just personal taste. Personally, I find the songs good, the goofy lyrics endearing, and the arrangements spectacular. (The vocals? Not so much. Bad to atrocious.)
Sunflower, along with Today, is almost certainly the one I'm most out of step with many fans about. "This Whole World" is one of my very favorite BBs songs ever, but there's a big drop off after that. I think most of the album is fine, solid, good...not great. It sounds better than it is. (Meaning cool engineering/production, great performances, but just not songs I much like.)

If you have 12-13 minutes to spare, cue up these five Love You songs as a kind of sampler:
1. Let Us Go On This Way 2. Roller Skating Child 3. The Night Was So Young 4. I'll Bet He's Nice 5. Airplane This is funny in that Airplane is one I'd never recommend to win someone over. And I'd have Good Time and Mona in there for sure, certainly above the first two you mentioned. She can get "Good Time" from Feel Flows. And, as much as we agree on Love You, we'll probably always disagree on "Mona".

That's almost my list, except for SS being at the bottom, and Wild Honey and LA being near the bottom. I was waffling about Wild Honey and LA, but I just don't think I enjoy those two albums as much as the ones I put in my B tier.

If people are finished pillorying poor Sheriff John Stone , I'll volunteer for the bullseye next. Go ahead, tell me what I did wrong (and I'll tell you why you're mistaken)!

I've read / heard it described as "punk" / "alternative" / "new wave", which I guess would make sense since, for the most part, that kind of music just isn't really for me.

I think it’s kind of awful. Full of very cringey lyrics. What the heck was going on in Brian’s head when he wrote those songs? “Ding Dang” is actually my favorite thing on the album and it’s way to short. I think I played it about 6 times. “Good Time” and “The Night Was So Young” are ok. “Good Time” was recorded many years earlier, correct? Having heard it on Feel Flows many times, probably helped, though I thought it was one of the weaker tracks in the box. I do love Marilyn’s voice. Kind of makes me want to listen to some American Spring. “Let’s Put Our Hearts Together” isn’t a great song though. I definitely prefer her voice to Brian’s on the song. At least I figured out why I hadn’t listened to the album in a very long time. I will probably play “Ding Dang” a couple of more times today though. It’s dang catchy! 🤣

Yeah, "Good Time" was initially recorded during sessions before Sunflower, but it didn't make the cut. Then it was on American Spring's 1972 album, from which it was actually a single. And then it resurfaced yet again for Love You. In a lot of ways--the more arrangement with natural instruments instead of all those synths; the younger, better voices--it sticks out like a sore thumb. But in terms of goofiness, it fits in.
(Nobody could take old music off the shelves and use or reuse it quite like the Beach Boys... After all, "When Girls Get Together" didn't appear for another few years after Love You, and that was also from the Sunflower sessions. And of course other material also from that era didn't appear for decades more, even when it was [mostly] done!)
As far as the album's lyrics, they are at best bizarre. I really like a lot of them, if not the ones that come across as child molester songs... For a funny take on that album, sometime look up the "Why I Hate This Album" podcast on the subject. It isn't by people who are particularly geeky about the Beach Boys, so they don't quite get all their history right, but it is funny.

What’s really strange is that Love You is so awful - I kind of want to listen to it a couple of more times today 🤷♀️

carllove , after listening numerous times today, do you think you ranked Love You too high? I believe you had it in the middle of the 'C' tier. Which had me thinking, I really should have explained in my initial post what I consider each tier to represent. It actually worked out pretty neatly once I added the 'F' tier. The following compares the tiers to 1-10 rankings and traditional school grades: Tier S = 10/10 = A+ or 100 Tier A = 9/10 = A Tier B = 8/10 = B Tier C = 7/10 = C Tier D = 5-6/10 = D Tier F = 1-4/10 = F

I could see that happening. Now, I’m going to have to brave me some M.I.U. Pretty sure I won’t want to listen to that album more than once or twice if I remember it right.

Well now I have “Good Time” and “Ding Dang” stuck in my head. The album is oddly charming, which I am pretty sure M.I.U. is not, as I recall. I think my mid C tier still stands for Love You.
Love You is Minnie Pearl and M.I.U. Is David Sedaris. For the love of God, could CBS Sunday Morning please bring back Jim Gaffigan?

OK, folks, if we've all agreed that my rankings are beyond reproach and perfect just as they are, is someone else ready to take their spot in the bullseye?
