kds , I think, for me, the two biggest surprises of your list are having Surf's Up that high, and above Holland, and also that you have Surfin' USA as high as you do. I guess I just don't recall you talking up those albums like you do others. I was about to say that that might be the 2nd highest ranking of Surfin' USA (after JK's 'A' tier, #2 overall) but looking back there's been a lot of love for Surfin' USA (which I think is pretty darn cool - and not what I'd have guessed based on other BBs message boards). As it turns out - you, AGD , carllove , and Emdeeh all rated it mid to high 'B' tier (and between #11-14 overall). I'm not sure how much I've talked about it here at BBT, but I really enjoy bother SUSA and Surf's Up. The second side of SU is particularly amazing. Surfin USA is really not an album I play super often, but everytime I do, I enjoy it front to back.

Heck - I even put Misirlou in my top 100. Also - I love the cover!

I regard it as their second-best album cover, after that of Surf's Up. It's also the one album where you can hear Carl and David's guitars to best advantage (despite Murry's efforts to keep David in the background), which is why I love the much-maligned "sea of instrumentals"! And "Finders Keepers" is surely unique in its exact copy during the chorus of the "lie" of The Four Seasons' opening harmonies on "Big Girls Don't Cry" (shhh... genius at work!):

AotW and current album ranking averages deleted for now!
I realized I'd made a few mistakes
I'm pulling this post for the time being. I'll correct it and post again later. Thank you for your patience.

Of course. What a labour of love! Have an extra stripe, sir. What does that make you -- Rear Admiral?

As previewed in the shoutbox, and following a false start that I deleted because of some errors, I compared our old Album of the Week ratings to our current individual rankings (averaged). A few notes to clarify first: This current rankings average includes nine people's rankings: BE, Carllove, Emdeeh, JK, Kapitan, KDS, Lonelysummer, Sheriff John Stone, and The Cincinnati Kid. That is roughly the same number of average votes in our old AotW threads, or maybe a bit more, though with several different people participating. I didn't include AGD's because a) he specified that each tier was arranged chronologically, not by preference; but also b) for some reason I can't see his rankings in his posts! Lonelysummer's rankings didn't include one album, Love You. I ranked it last based on that omission and my understanding that he doesn't like it, but can update that if he’d like. The AotW included solo albums, live albums, etc., which are all simply omitted in the rankings here: the rankings from that project only use the albums included in this new individual rankings thread. (So for example, SIP is probably 40th in the AotW threads, but we only had 29 albums here, so it's 29th). Biggest riser since AotW? Little Deuce Coupe +11 spots!Biggest fall since AotW? TWGMTR -7 spotsI've also added the person with the biggest discrepancy from the current rankings' average for each album (using red for higher than and blue for lower than the average). Where there are similarly or notably large discrepancies both ways, I've listed both ways. Occasionally I've also noted when there was surprisingly little variation from highest to lowest ranking. Current I.R. Album Position (I.R. Avg Pos.) AotW Pos. (AotW Avg. Score) (Biggest Disparity) 1. Pet Sounds (3.8) 1 (10) (Emdeeh -6.2)2. Today (4.0) 4 (8.8) (Carllove -5)3. Sunflower (5.4) 3 (8.8) (Kapitan -4.6)4. All Summer Long (6.4) 2 (8.8) (Carllove -7.6)5. SDSN (6.9) 5 (8.7) (JK -7.1)6. Surf’s Up (7.1) 10 (7.7) ( BE -9.9; JK +6.1) 7. Wild Honey (8.3) 11 (7.7) ( KDS & SJS -9.7; Emdeeh +7.3) 8. Holland (9.0) 7 (8.0) ( BE & SJS -3; Emdeeh & KDS +2 - remarkably little variation!) 9. Surfer Girl (9.8) 6 (8.4) ( JK +6.8; Kapitan -4.2) 10. Little Deuce Coupe (10.6) 21 (6.6) ( Kapitan -8.4; JK +6.6)

Surfin USA (14.9) 13 (7.5) ( JK +12.9; Kapitan -10.1) 15. CATP (15.4) 18 (7.0) (TCK -6.6)16. TWGMTR (15.6) 9 (7.8) ( TCK +9.6; BE -8.4) 17. Smiley Smile (17.6) 16 (7.2) ( JK +10.6; TCK -9.4) 18. Christmas (18.0) 15 (7.3) ( TCK +11; Emdeeh -9) 19. Party (18.5) 24 (5.9) ( BE +12.5; JK & SJS -6.5) 20. Love You (18.5) 17 (7.1) ( Kapitan & SJS +15.5; Lonelysummer -10.5)

Intersting! Looks like Surf's Up and Wild Honey climbed a few spots at the expense of Surfer Girl and Friends. Little Deuce Coupe (inexplicably?) shot up like a rocket! Holland is an interesting case of a highly ranked album where there's very little variation. By the way, it's very cool that you included each of our biggest discrepancies! Overall, though, the tiers are pretty consistent from the prior thread series to the current thread. Which you'd expect. You got some of those polarizing/tough-to-rank albums moving around a bit in the middle tier. I suppose you could say Surfin' Safari and MIU swapped positions in the bottom tier (and that, SJS, in both instances, fought a losing battle over it). I probably catapulted Party into the middle tier almost singlehandedly. Fun stuff!

Little Deuce Coupe (inexplicably?) shot up like a rocket! Holland is an interesting case of a highly ranked album where there's very little variation. These were two that really surprised me, LDC for its dramatic rise, and Holland for the lack of variation (only five spots from highest to lowest ranking!). It seems the latter is really an album that almost everyone enjoys, but nobody REALLY loves or hates enough to make it an outlier.
LDC really was surprising, too. Eleven spots is quite a climb. Sure, JK has it 4th on his list, but in my initial incarnation of this project, I hadn't seen and thus hadn't included JK's list, and it was still easily the biggest climber, though at 10 instead of 11 spots. In fact, if you removed my and JK's relative outliers, almost everyone else has it in that late single digits and early double digits range. So either opinion on it has shifted, or our shifting personnel just have different ideas about it.

Pretty sure I wasn’t on this board when you did “Little Deuce Coupe” and I had it at #11, which is one less than the recent ranking. I have a soft spot for the title track, because when I saw The Beach Boys in 1986 for the first time, the Boys rode out onto the stage in a 1932 Ford Model 18, before starting their car song set. “Little Deuce Coupe”, “The Little Old Lady From Pasadena”, “Hey Little Cobra”, “Shutdown”, “409” and “G.T.O.”. It was a pretty awesome set, even though I wasn’t a fan at the time. I will never forget it.

LDC was fairly recent on the Best / Worst thread. Maybe some fresh listens did its ranking some good.

The perfect length of time to be able to listen to each album at least once, if not more and not too long that we forget about the thread, or lose the excitement for it. So far, it’s been a great journey!

I sort of did once, but I didn't include the Xmas album then.

I listened to it at home, instead of work because I didn’t want people to think I was crazy! (Guess I could have used headphones - but I like to hear if someone is knocking on my door).

Although, I'm more concerned about reactions when it comes time for Smiley Smile.
