I have to mow today. Mowing this morning, grilling in the evening.
I usually keep cutting the grass into late October. Two years ago, I mowed the lawn on Thanksgiving weekend. That was weird.

I usually keep cutting the grass into late October. I just go based on what the grass is telling me. But usually in fall growth really slows or stops. Considering how little it grew all summer, I'm just guessing it might not be necessary. But who knows, if we start getting more rain (we're well over 6" below normal YTD) and happen to get warmer than average temps, I might have to mow more in fall than I did all summer!

Mine usually doesn't stop growing until mid October at the earliest.

Going into the 4th Of July, my yard looked great. And it was all downhill from there. The drought took over and that was it. I couldn't keep up with watering things every day which was necessary. My annuals died a quick or quicker death than usual. The grass went from a glorious green to a crisp brown. I think I went over three weeks without mowing it.
Now, today actually, I'm going outside to cut back/off whatever is left of the annuals and perennials. I cut the grass last night (finished in the dark at 7:30 PM). We had some rain last week and it's making a bit of a comeback. I hope we get rain this week while the temps are still warm. I want it to look nice and green and full before Thanksgiving comes along.

Considering the dry spell we had last month, my lawn looks ok.
I mowed a few hours ago. Now, sitting on the deck. The charcoal is lit. The sun's hanging low in the sky. I'm on my third Summer Lager. I have my summer music on. It's 79, with little to no humidity and an occasional breeze. Life is good.
I'm trying to soak it all in and savor it because...this is it.

It seems that our summer has a hard out: Tuesday overnight. Today we'll be above normal, up around 80; and tomorrow could be 90. But tomorrow night into Wednesday we'll drop into the low 50s and by the looks of things, at least in the coming 10 days, we're not likely to see summer temperatures again. It's a lot of daytime highs in the upper 60s and lows getting even as low as the high 40s.
And let's be real: in Minnesota, once you get into October and have had some cooler temps, you're not all that likely to see 80s again.
I won't mind. The 60s are almost my ideal temps. I just hope we get a couple months of it, not an early winter.

The forecast for today is 97 and tomorrow 98. The heat index was 102 yesterday. Just miserable. I love temps in the 60’s as well, but it always seems that we get very little of that sort of weather. We get a lot of 50’s once the heat recedes. We do have one day this week with a high in the 60’s, but that’s because of rain. Then back into the 80’s. I always forget how warm September can be here. I also forget how cold February and March can get. We will always get one or two days in the 70’s though - like a little tease.

I'm actually amazing at how punctual the forecast will be here. We're going to be in the mid 80s all week until Thursday.
But, even though we still technically have a few days left, Saturday was my summer send off. I played my usual summer ending songs
Summer's Almost Gone - The Doors Boys of Summer - Don Henley When the Coast is Clear - Buffett Summer's Gone - Beach Boys
The last summer ale has been enjoyed.

Similar to Kapitan, we're going to hit 90 by Wednesday, but that appears to be the end of summer as well. After that, it's highs in the upper 60s to low 70s for the foreseeable future. As I look out the window in my backyard, I see a few trees starting to turn color with a leaf or two falling every few minutes. Fall is almost here.

You know, I hadn't put together the pieces to realize just how perfect our forecasted change in the weather will be! While we're apparently going to approach the all-time record high of 91 today, as I noted earlier, we're looking at a sudden, dramatic shift to cooler weather beginning overnight and into tomorrow.
The first day of summer is officially Thursday. It's so close to perfect! I almost want the cool front to hold off one day...

Well, all good things come to an end. Autumn officially begins this evening at a few minutes after 9 p.m. ET. It was 45 degrees when I woke up, so it certainly feels like summer has ended. This was our first temp below 50 degrees in 118 days, according to MPR. (We had 92 degrees on Tuesday!) I'm looking out my window and seeing a neighbor's tree is maybe 25% reddish-orange leaves.
As much as I can enjoy summer, I can enjoy autumn at least as much: it's more a matter of how short it usually seems. I'm hoping it'll stay until after Thanksgiving before the snows begin, but we'll see.

Yep, summer official ends in a few hours
The summer of 2022 was a fun one. We went out and did a lot of fun things, but not to the point of exhaustion, which can be tricky to balance sometimes.
Made it to the beach three times. Had great weather. Finally made it to a few concerts - Jimmy Buffett and Ringo Starr - after getting COVID prevented me from seeing Paul McCartney in mid June.
I also managed to find some time to just sit outside and enjoy the summer air. I've been doing that more and more in recent years, during all seasons really. There's something very calming about it.
Despite summer being my favorite season, I welcome Fall, and the four weeks of good fall weather we usually get.

This is what I have increasingly found in the past five years or so, too. Usually I'm out there with a book, or a drink, or both. Other times I'll be out there with the laptop or a notebook. Sometimes just nothing at all, and I just find myself watching squirrels chasing one another around tree trunks, birds swooping here and there, or clouds shifting in and out of almost recognizable shapes.
Regardless, I actually feel it is recreation in the literal sense of the word: it is very restorative, like it builds me up for the rest of life. Great for the spirit, I'd say if I were the sort to think there was such a thing as a spirit. Instead I guess I'll say great for mental health.

It's hard for me to do it in the daytime, but my typical outdoor times are Friday and Saturday nights, after my son is in bed, usually around 8pm. I used to do between 30-60 minutes, but lately my wife has been using the time to binge watch TV shows. So, on any given night, depending on our moods, I can be outside for up to two hours. Not that we don't love spending time together, but we also each value some time alone too. I mentioned this before on here, but summer gives me the chance to have my deck time in the sunlight, which I love. But, now that summer is over, I do look forward to my deck nights that will not require insect repellant.
