Finally, we are getting some rain today! One of the local weathermen showed an early Summer, versus current picture of his lawn. The first picture was a lawn that was so lush and so green it was almost blue. The second picture was yellow brown and sparse. He said he had even done some watering. After receiving a $300 water bill, we stopped watering the yard. Ours isn’t quite as bad as the weatherman’s yard, but I have noticed some bare patches. It was so nice waking up to rain this morning. So relaxing! It’s been so long …

While our rains finally started arriving a week or so ago, I can totally relate. The feeling of rain is almost always pleasant for me anyway, but after a long dry spell it's magical.
I live a few blocks from the creek that feeds Minnehaha Falls, a state park and local attraction in the city. Most of the summer, the creek has had spots you could walk across without getting your feet wet (despite often being 5-10 yards across and during wetter summers, something people canoe and kayak in), and the falls were often more like your tap water faucet than a roaring waterfall. Lawns--except those who watered--were pretty uniformly brown.
But I'm always amazed how quickly they can come back. Mine is now back to that forest green color already. And I didn't water at all, as I just can't see the sense in that.

I just mowed my lawn. Its probably greener now than its been since Mid June, but I still have a big patch of dead lawn near where one of my trees used to be. But, I just noticed some green sprouting through, so hopefully thats a good sign.

Labor Day Weekend is over, and it feels somewhat appropriate that we're getting a day long rain today after the unofficial ending of summertime.
We had our last summer trip to Ocean City this past weekend, returning home yesterday. I try not to lose perspective of how fortunate we are to have a place to stay down there. When I was a kid, we got one long weekend down there per summer, and one summer, we didn't even have that. It wasn't until the summer after my 3rd grade year (1989) that we got a full week long vacation, a tradition we carried throughout my childhood, but it was still that one annual trip.
In 2004, my folks got a really good deal on a second house down there, since their primary residence in Baltimore was paid off. So, now, we go to Ocean City 5-6 times in the calendar year, usually three times in summer. But, even with that, it sometimes doesn't feel like enough.
Sunday was our last full day down there, and I was hoping to have a night of my son riding his beloved rides on the Boardwalk. But, I think we wore him out. By 7pm, he was done with the rides. I have to admit, I was a little bummed, because at the rate he's growing, he might be too big for some of the kiddie rides next summer. But, it was his choice. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he can stay under four feet in height for one more summer, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.
For now, with our summer Ocean City trips in the rearview and my son back in school, we're in that "kneeling on the football" portion of summer. Summer officially comes to an end in just over two weeks, so I plan to just enjoy it as much as possible.

I know it's still summer, but today won't feel like it. The high was right at midnight, when it was still 78. Right now it's 71, but the temps are going to drop into the low 60s throughout the day! I guess it being a Friday (meaning I need to work regardless), it's not that big a deal either way. But it'll definitely have the feel of autumn.

To be fair it was 90 yesterday. So it's not as if it's been too autumnal...

It's going to be almost 90 here again today. The cold front is going to brush us this weekend, then it's back up into the upper 80's by Tuesday. So ready to sit by the firepit and actually need the heat of the fire!

Looking at the Baltimore area forecast, we're looking at highs in the low 80s straight on through the official end of Summer.

We had a nice late summer Saturday this past weekend.
We got some pit beef sandwiches for lunch before going to the State Fair. We could've waited to eat at the Fair, but I know our son would want to ride rides the whole time, so this way, my wife and I didn't have to take turns running to the food stands. Plus, Fair food is pretty darned expensive.
But, it was a beautiful sunny day, in the mid 80s. And, it was still surprisingly warm after the sun went down, which made it easier to enjoy the last few beers from my Sam Adams Summer Sampler.

While we had a cool weekend, it was very nice: still in the low 70s, sunny, etc. Now we're looking at high 70s and low 80s for a week or more, after which I assume we'll see fewer and fewer (if any) days that hot. This might be our last hurrah of the year.
Obviously we're seeing less daylight, too, with sunrise now around 6:45 and sunset before 7:30. I don't mind earlier sunsets, but the later sunrises do make it difficult to get out of bed in the mornings.

We're looking at highs in the low 80s, upper 70s for the next two weeks or so.
This Saturday is the last Summer Saturday, so I'm going to see if I can locate any seasonal summer beers and grill some food in the sunshine (in the forecast so far). It'll also be the last weekend, I play my Spotify Summer lists, so even though summer doesn't officially end until next Thursday, the 22nd, Saturday will serve as my ceremonial send off.
I'm actually the opposite in that I'd prefer to have more light in the evening. That's why if we ever ditch the concept of Daylight Saving Time, I'd prefer that we stay in DST permanently. Although, I also don't really feel like changing the clocks twice a year is nearly as much of a struggle as it's made out to be.

In the home stretch. Tonight, I'm listening to my Buffett Ballads playlist for the last time this summer.

This summer was kind of a waste for me. Even my vacation feels like it didn't even happen. I was always working on the house and worried about various things with it that have all been thankfully resolved as of yesterday. Still have to paint the house and seal the driveway. After that I can start relaxing and work on building a fire pit back in the woods.

After that I can start relaxing and work on building a fire pit back in the woods. Sorry to hear that. Vacations are funny like that, aren't they? They come and go so darn fast, its easy to wonder if it was a dream. I actually got a new fire pit for Father's Day. My previous one rusted out. We hadn't used it in a couple years. But, knock on wood, since my son seems to be sleeping a little better these days, I'm looking forward to some fall nights by the fire.

I felt like summer flew by, too, with the first half of it seeing me covering two jobs while looking to hire someone. It was pleasant anyway, and I did get plenty of opportunities to enjoy it even during those busy months. And now I'm one week from kicking off my "summer" vacation, even though it'll go into the first few days of October! I work next week, then have off the following week and the first Monday of October.
It still feels more or less like summer outside, but the signs are there: later sunrises and earlier sunsets; cooler nights; of course football in full swing. Despite a few hot days yet in the forecast, it actually looks like real fall weather will kick in right around the start of my vacation: next weekend has highs in the 60s and I see our first overnight low as being in the high 40s! We have not had that cold a temp since last spring sometime.
Odds are I'll only have to mow one more time this season, which is funny considering I probably mowed four times total all year. It was just so dry most of the summer... I'd do it today, but we had sprinkles on and off yesterday and already in the wee hours overnight, so it's too wet right now.
