Pepe Cardona died on July 28th from pancreatic cancer at the age of 72. You probably never heard of Pepe. He was a member of a group called Alive N Kickin'. In the summer of 1970, Alive N Kickin' released a song called "Tighter, Tighter", written and produced by Tommy James (of The Shondells fame). It reached No. 7 on the Billboard charts and sold over a million copies. Alive N Kickin' were a "one-hit wonder" but what a song! Sandy Toder sang the female lead, Pepe sang the male part. Thanks for the song and the music, Pepe, and R.I.P.

For my money, I don't think anyone ever made metal sound as good as Martin Birch did. Those first two Dio era Sabbath albums and the ones he produced for Maiden are impossible to beat.

Justin Townes Earle, the singer-songwriter son of fellow singer-songwriter Steve Earle, died last night. He was 38. Justin had a history of serious drug abuse, though he had reportedly been sober in recent years.

I don't know either artist but that's incredibly sad news.

The great writer and jazz critic (which is what gets him into this thread) Stanley Crouch died Wednesday at age 74 following years of poor health. His insights into music were interesting, but he was a far bigger thinker than that. From the linked NPR obit:

And, R.I.P. to Helen Reddy, who also passed away on September 29th at the age of 78, the same age as Mac Davis. Mac had a nice list of songs he had written, and for a few years in the early 1970's, Helen Reddy was a staple on AM radio.
