This morning I played the canonical Doors albums to remind myself of their music. In the end, I did a Top 15, along with an extra few songs that aren't far behind. The reality for me is that a lot of Doors music just blends together into a few types of songs, so before long it blends together to my ears.
Funny fact: I kept being drawn to the bass guitar parts and/or tone as being cool. Ironic considering there wasn't a bassist in the band.
I don't feel super strongly about this list's order, it's just a rough approximation.
1. People Are Strange 2. Break on Through 3. Alabama Song 4. LA Woman 5. Don’t You Love Her Madly
6. Hello, I Love You 7. Love Me Two Times 8. Light My Fire 9. Roadhouse Blues 10. Peace Frog
11. The Crystal Ship 12. Been Down So Long 13. Riders on the Storm 14. Easy Ride 15. Touch Me
Honorable Mention I Looked at You Runnin’ Blue Wintertime Love Strange Days Spanish Caravan Waiting For the Sun Tell All the People Hyacinth House
I like seeing some attention towards Wintertime Love.

The Doors - Top 25 01. Break On Through 02. Been Down So Long 03. The Changeling 04. Roadhouse Blues 05. Light My Fire 06. People Are Strange 07. Back Door Man 08. Touch Me 09. Love Her Madly 10. Hello, I Love You 11. Love Me Two Times 12. When The Music's Over 13. Cars Hiss By My Window 14. L.A. Woman 15. Twentieth Century Fox 16. You Make Me Real 17. You're Lost Little Girl 18. Moonlight Drive 19. Hyacinth House 20. Land Ho! 21. Soul Kitchen 22. My Eyes Have Seen You 23. Crawling King Snake 24. Wild Child 25. The Unknown Soldier The Doors: 5 Strange Days: 6 Waiting For The Sun: 2 The Soft Parade: 2 Morrison Hotel: 3 L.A. Woman: 7 Honorable mentions: "The Crystal Ship", "Strange Days", "Peace Frog", "Waiting For The Sun", "Ship of Fools", "Riders on the Storm" etc. Some interesting choices, B.E.! I think our lists have more in common...than not. However, I have some comments :
- Been Down So Long and The Changeling, #2 and #3 respectively...stunning. Oh, I love both songs, but I can't go that high, not with the other classics. - Back Door Man - #7 - there are better songs on that first album. - Cars Hiss By My Window - #13 - Again, I love it but I can't go that high. You have it ahead of L.A. Woman! - Hyacinth House - #19 - Yep, it was on my list until the final cut. One of the few underrated Doors' songs in the catalogue. It is so good.
- Twentieth Century Fox - #15 - Nice selection. - Land Ho! - #20 - It was between this one and Ship Of Fools for me. I went with the latter but I could go either way. Love Robby's guitar on Land Ho!. - My Eyes have Seen You - #22 - We agree...what a great song. More great Robby guitar. - Crawling King Snake - #23 - We don't agree on this one. Maybe the only weak song on L.A. Woman. It needed another take or something. I prefer all of the live versions much more, especially the Live In New York version. - It's interesting but ALL of your Honorable mentions MADE MY FINAL LIST!
B.E., it's obvious you know your Doors. Did you go with mostly your favorites? I can see by your album/song breakdown that we are pretty much in line with each other. L.A. Woman is my favorite Doors' album, but I couldn't go with seven songs. There were just too many other songs to include.

Very interesting, Kapitan. If I may comment...but since you "don't feel super strongly" about the order, I'll take it easy :
- People Are Strange - #1 - Really? Of all Doors' songs? It didn't even make my list, but it appears it made everybody else's, and rather highly. - Alabama Song - #3 - A little surprised. Just a little. - Hello, I Love You - #6 - See, now that's just the type of song I didn't think you'd like. - Easy Ride - #14 - Like Hello, I Love You, a little lightweight, not very adventurous, very pop-ish. - I Looked At You - Honorable Mention - Ahead of some of those other great songs from The Doors? - Wintertime Love - Honorable Mention - Yep, agree. It doesn't get enough respect. The Doors' only Christmas song (well, winter-y song ). - Spanish Caravan - Honorable Mention - Ooh. Interesting choice. Do you like the flamenco guitar, or the exciting second half, or both? - Tell All the People - Honorable Mention - Really? Well, it was single... - Hyacinth House - Honorable Mention - Yep. Damn, I should've stuck with it.
I'm still processing your statement on The Doors' music "blending together into a few types of songs, so before long it blends together to my ears." That's very interesting. I might be misunderstanding your point, but I always thought that each Doors' album was significantly different from the previous one, and that they rarely repeated musical ideas other than the occasional organ or guitar solo from Ray and Robby.

Funny, I was contemplating the same statement as I drove home from work today. I think I know what he means, and I might agree to an extent, but let’s wait to hear back from Kapitan.

I could do a Doors top 25, but the first album is the only one in my collection, so it would be mostly the hits. An oddball choice that would be on my list is the b-side of Love Her Madly, You Need Meet (Don't Go No Further). Ray sings it and vocally, he's no Morrison, but he's not bad.

I was thinking about stretching The Doors to a Top 50, but with only six albums (sorry, Sheriff, but despite my best efforts, I cannot get into those two post Jim albums), I'll probably stick to 25. I can't recall seeing any tracks from these albums (or the poetry one) in anyone's list. Or have I missed something?

In my opinion, some of those songs (In The Eye Of The Sun, Ships With Sails, Tightrope Ride, The Mosquito) were good enough for inclusion on the Morrison-led Doors' albums, but it's very questionable if any of them would reach the heights of the Top 25. I considered it, but...no.

I guess for all the "really?" or "this high?" all I can say is yeah.
As for "Hello, I Love You" it's exactly the type of song I wish they did more of. I mean, I love the Kinks... But really, it's tighter, a nice pop song. I would prefer that from them.
"Spanish Caravan," I like the whole thing.
As for the sameness, maybe its the number of semi-psychedelic minor-key vamps and blues rock tunes, maybe it's the use of (almost exclusively) just Jim Morrison's voice without backgrounds or harmonies or other singers, maybe it's the mostly uniform instrumentation (with exceptions like on The Soft Parade or pianos instead of organs sometimes). Maybe it's my lack of interest, since I believe pretty strongly that people who are less familiar with/interested in types of music almost always say "it all sounds the same."

Touch Me 21. Love Me Two Times 22. Back Door Man 23. You're Lost Little Girl 24. Moonlight Drive 25. LA Woman Very interesting list, kds, and a little surprising!
- People Are Strange - #1 - Whoa! Who knew... - End Of The Night - #4 - This one has grown on me; I'm glad it got recognized. Great Jim lyrics and, of course, Ray's organ. - Spanish Caravan - #10? - Wintertime Love - #14 - I don't think it has been recognized as an all-timer over the years; maybe time for a re-evaluation. I'm pushing for Christmas radio.
- Back Door Man - #22 - Another Back Door Man fan.
- L.A. Woman - #25 - I'm surprised at how low this is being ranked on your/some other lists.
Nice well-rounded list. 13 songs until L.A. Woman is represented (with Riders On the Storm at #13). Hmm...

Is People Are Strange not one of The Doors most renowned songs? I also love Robbie's solo in End of the Night. Yes, that's my ten. Wintertime Love might not be an all timer, but these are just personal favorites. I guess it would fit onto a Christmas playlist, but it's one that I gravitate too in the post Christmas winter months. And, I'm just not as into the LA Woman album as I am the first three.

Is People Are Strange not one of The Doors most renowned songs? Yes, I suppose that's my bias showing. While I don't remember it , "People Are Strange" did hit #12 in 1967, so I guess it was successful. But, I always thought of it as an underwhelming follow-up single to "Light My Fire", especially considering the other great songs on Strange Days. Maybe that's what The Doors were going for - a different style (cough...Kapitan ). I think "People Are Strange" is maybe the sixth best song on Strange Days behind "Strange Days", "My Eyes Have Seen You", "Moonlight Drive", "Love Me Two Times", and "When The Music's Over" - though I still like it very much. I like the concept of the song (with Jim's lyrics) and it is different than most Doors' songs. There was a Doors' documentary called When You're Strange. Yes, "People Are Strange was included on every Doors' comp (I think), so, yes, it is renowned.

I know I'm in the minority - actually it's almost blasphemy - but I would not have minded if "You Need Meat (Don't Go No Further)" replaced "Crawling King Snake" on L.A. Woman, unless they did a better take of the song.
