Personally, I have sufficient memories.
I do, too. I won't say I wanted him to retire, but I will say I didn't plan to see him again even if he came through town. The last time I saw him was 2016 and that was pretty awkward already. I didn't feel good being in that audience when Brian was singing. It was much worse than the decades of "oh, he's just not a great live performer; he's nervous and awkward on stage; he hears voices; and of course his voice has deteriorated with age!" sort of thing. This was really just flat-out not good at all. It made it hard to be there (for me). Those clips from more recent shows did nothing to change my mind. So, I saw him put on some really good shows between 2001 and 2016. I forget how many, but half a dozen or more. I wasn't necessarily thinking he SHOULD retire, but I was retiring from seeing him anyway.

Hi all, Brian and Mike will decide when it is time to retire. We have all enjoyed their music. When someone asks if it is time for Brian, Mike, or any singer to retire it seems as though that person wants them to retire. I ope that Brian and Mike continue to perform for as long as they are able. More power to them that they are still singing on stage. Hi Mary, nice to see you here at Beach Boys Today. I hope you're doing well. I agree with this assessment. As long as they're still able, I have no issue with the remaining Beach Boys still touring.

This thread is relatively recent, and look at the changes since it started! I think it's safe to say that Brian Wilson is retired. If we do get another single/recording, I'm thinking it was probably recorded a while ago with questionable participation from Brian. And, while they aren't retired professionally, Scott Totten and John Cowsill leaving The Beach Boys' band is huge. Changes, changes, changes...
Regarding Kapitan's point about fans who wished Brian would retire then missing him and his band, I am one of those fans. I think because Brian was touring for so long and we had the opportunity to see him almost annually, because the bulk of his setlist became somewhat repetitive, and because the guy got every last ounce out of his talent, it will be easier to "let go" and NOT feel that we missed an opportunity. Personally, I have sufficient memories.
That's probably a pretty safe assumption, especially considering we're now into summertime, and there's been no news about any Brian Wilson tour, or shows, or festival appearances, etc. It's still a tad odd to me that no explanation was ever given for the abrupt ending to Brian's tour schedule last year. I don't think any major details are needed or anything like that, but it was never even addressed.

How's this for an old cliche' - Brian's non-actions in concert spoke louder than words.
There is one way I will miss seeing Brian and eventually the Beach Boys, and I mean no disrespect toward them. I've posted several times in the past that going to BW/BB concerts has become almost a social event, a night out with the old Beach Boys' gang. I will miss that. Because most of my favorite artists are either dead or retired, I don't go to many concerts. The last decade or so, I would go to see Brian almost out of obligation and as an excuse to spend time with my buddies. The thrill and curiosity with Brian was still there, but in diminishing returns. I'm going to see The Beach Boys in September and the feeling will be similar. Other than the two new band members, I know what to expect.
On another personal note, one of our Beach Boys' gang recently passed away. He was 72, a little older than most of us, and was late in becoming a Beach Boys' fan. His favorite album was Surf's Up. He suffered a stroke and didn't recover. I'll miss him.

I met her after that summer of 2012 when I first did a deep dive into The Beach Boys after seeing a reunion show. And, we bonded over their music, and wound up seeing Brian, Mike & Bruce, and Al several times over the years. We also saw Love and Mercy in theaters. It's probably unlikely at this point that we'll attend another BB related show, but they were fun.

Sorry to hear that, Sheriff John Stone. Like kds, I don't have a "Beach Boys gang," not really ... other than online. I've had a few real-life friends I could cajole into attending shows with me, but it's almost depressing knowing that they're really not getting out of it anything close to what I am. I do have one friend who is more into them--though still not REALLY into them--but he moved overseas for work well over a decade ago. So it's not as if we can go to shows together. Point being, your experience of having a gang to get together for shows sounds really fun, and is something I've missed out on. (Heck, I attended my first relevant show--Brian Wilson opening for Paul Simon in 2001--alone.)

I also attended my first BB related show alone. I made a last second decision to see them in 2012, and wasn't able to convince anyone to go see the band that June night. But, that's the breaks when you're born in 1980, and heavily into a lot of 60s and 70s artists. I've attended several shows over the years by myself, from Roger Waters, The Who, Iron Maiden, Blue Oyster Cult, etc.
I really don't mind it for the most part, but I'll admit now that it's harder for me to get motivated to buy a single ticket for a show anymore.
