In April 2008, my son's birthday present to me was two tickets to Brian's Kenwood House "picnic" concert out on the lawn on June 28.
I remember there was an intermission (after "Do It Again"?) and everyone tucked into the drinks supplied by that day's sponsor, J@cques C!der with Fru!t. It was p!ss but it was free. When they all came back, Brian did what I can only describe as an ultra-brief dance routine. He looked very ill at ease, which fits in with the story that he had to be coaxed back on, bribed, threatened, whatever it took. Indeed, Foskett later complained that Brian might just as well not have been there that day! (With thanks to AGD at the old Capitol BB MB.)
All this aside, it's one of my all-time favourite concerts -- I'd seen one of my idols in the flesh and what more can one wish for in life? -- although I must confess it felt a little odd bellowing "in the nude" together with a bunch of complete strangers. There was this Japanese guy sitting next to us, a self-confessed massive Wild Honey fan. The expression on his face when they launched into "I'd Love Just Once To See You" was worth the price of admission alone.
I was knocked out by the incredible musicianship -- it's been my only solo BW concert, with a slight change in lineup since the SMiLE gigs. A fellow poster (actually a lady) at the old Cap Board was there -- we never met -- and she later uploaded some videos. I hope to present them (and some by another uploader) in chronological order over the coming days/weeks.
This, it transpires, was the setlist (there was also "Row, Row, Row Your Boat", sung as a canon between different sections of the audience as instructed by BW, but I have yet to discover where that fits in):
California Girls
Then I Kissed Her
Dance, Dance, Dance
Surfer Girl
Hawaii
Drive-In
You're So Good to Me
When I Grow Up (to Be a Man)
Salt Lake City
Do You Wanna Dance?
Don't Worry Baby
I Get Around
Do It Again
[Intermission here? — may need checking]
All Summer Long
Catch a Wave
Girl Don't Tell Me
In My Room
Please Let Me Wonder
I'd Love Just Once to See You
The Little Girl I Once Knew
Breakaway
Heroes and Villains
Add Some Music to Your Day
Sloop John B
God Only Knows
Sail On, Sailor

Encore:
