I've since located videos shot by AvenueQGirl during "California Girls" and "Hawaii". This source (presumably Eric Aniversario's wonderful site) states that this "was the first show with the newly modified band lineup. Brett Simons makes his debut here, and Mike D'Amico makes a permanent return. Bob Lizik and Jim Hines retired from the band prior to this portion of the tour." It adds that the backup band included [sic] the following: Jeffrey Foskett Darian Sahanaja Scott Bennett Probyn Gregory Nik Walusko Taylor Mills Paul Mertens Nelson Bragg Mike D'Amico Brett Simons For completeness' sake, this was my ticket:

In April 2008, my son's birthday present to me was two tickets to Brian's Kenwood House "picnic" concert out on the lawn on June 28. I remember there was an intermission (after "Do It Again"?) and everyone tucked into the drinks supplied by that day's sponsor, J@cques C!der with Fru!t. It was p!ss but it was free. When they all came back, Brian did what I can only describe as an ultra-brief dance routine. He looked very ill at ease, which fits in with the story that he had to be coaxed back on, bribed, threatened, whatever it took. Indeed, Foskett later complained that Brian might just as well not have been there that day! (With thanks to AGD at the old Capitol BB MB.) All this aside, it's one of my all-time favourite concerts -- I'd seen one of my idols in the flesh and what more can one wish for in life? -- although I must confess it felt a little odd bellowing "in the nude" together with a bunch of complete strangers. There was this Japanese guy sitting next to us, a self-confessed massive Wild Honey fan. The expression on his face when they launched into "I'd Love Just Once To See You" was worth the price of admission alone. I was knocked out by the incredible musicianship -- it's been my only solo BW concert, with a slight change in lineup since the SMiLE gigs. A fellow poster (actually a lady) at the old Cap Board was there -- we never met -- and she later uploaded some videos. I hope to present them (and some by another uploader) in chronological order over the coming days/weeks. This, it transpires, was the setlist (there was also "Row, Row, Row Your Boat", sung as a canon between different sections of the audience as instructed by BW, but I have yet to discover where that fits in): California Girls Then I Kissed Her Dance, Dance, Dance Surfer Girl Hawaii Drive-In You're So Good to Me When I Grow Up (to Be a Man) Salt Lake City Do You Wanna Dance? Don't Worry Baby I Get Around Do It Again [Intermission here? — may need checking] All Summer Long Catch a Wave Girl Don't Tell Me In My Room Please Let Me Wonder I'd Love Just Once to See You The Little Girl I Once Knew Breakaway Heroes and Villains Add Some Music to Your Day Sloop John B God Only Knows Sail On, Sailor Marcella Good Vibrations Encore: Johnny B. Goode Help Me, Rhonda Barbara Ann Surfin' U.S.A. Fun, Fun, Fun Southern California Excuse my ignorance, but what was so notable about this show? It looks like just another greatest hits show to me.

Excuse my ignorance, but what was so notable about this show? It looks like just another greatest hits show to me. It's the only BW concert I've ever attended. I'd seen one of my idols onstage, and that made it more than notable for me! I thought it would be cool to find as many videos of it as I could, something you don't see often on websites for a single show.

I don't accept that this was "just another greatest hits show" in terms of its set list. I'm not saying it was a particularly special show (it being jk's only live show notwithstanding). But "just...greatest hits shows" don't typically include songs like:
Then I Kissed Her Dance, Dance, Dance Hawaii Drive-In You're So Good to Me When I Grow Up (to Be a Man) Salt Lake City Catch a Wave Girl Don't Tell Me Please Let Me Wonder I'd Love Just Once to See You The Little Girl I Once Knew Breakaway Heroes and Villains Add Some Music to Your Day Marcella Southern California
That's quite a few tunes beyond the "Fun Fun Fun" and "Surfer Girl" variety ... a large percentage of the full show. It's exactly that kind of set list that had people very excited about Brian Wilson's band over the Beach Boys beginning in the late 90s.

A lot of those you singled out were part of the "Beach Boys traveling jukebox" over the years...Dance Dance Dance, You're So Good to Me, Catch a Wave, Please Let Me Wonder, Hawaii...you know, the shows they were criticized for by many hardcore fans and Brianistas.

Yeah, but don't forget the very important point of jk's post, the part that was absolutely necessary to correct - Bob Lizik and Jim Hines did not retire from the band prior to the show; they were sacked. That point was so important, so relevant, so necessary to correct. Don't let that happen again, jk.

I checked setlist.fm after reading your post, since I do admit I'm not exactly intimately familiar with 80s and 90s BBs set lists especially. And it does seem specificallyt he ones you mentioned were played to some extent at different times. (Though some, not really so much during that era you mention, assuming "traveling jukebox" means 80s and 90s.) There is still an important point about it, though--beyond the fact that several of these absolutely were not performed regularly by the Beach Boys--which is that a single concert included this many relatively under-the-radar songs. You've got some that the BBs would very rarely or never do (I'd Love Just Once to See You, Girl Don't Tell Me, etc.), but then also not just one or two of those others that they might do, but a dozen of them in the same set list. That was my point. Now, I'm not saying this is a "Brian Good, Beach Boys Bad" thing at all. We all know Brian's shows at times veered toward more of the hits and fewer rarities, too. I'm just saying you can't realistically call that setlist "just another greatest hits show." That's just not true.

I sense just a bit of sarcasm... And you would be correct. Rather than end this thread on a sarcastic note, I have just been informed that Nelson Bragg has confirmed on Facebook that he will be there in Lutterworth on 20 April for "The Final Wave". The original FB announcement is as follows: *The Final Wave…The Beach Boys Fans Ultimate Get Together* "Let’s Get Together And Do It Again"… Isn't it time we were all together again? We'd like to invite you to The Final Wave, on Saturday April 20th 2024 at The Wycliffe Rooms, Lutterworth, Leics, LE17 4ED. The final line-up is still being worked on, but artists who have indicated their intention to be with us – either in person or via Zoom – include David Leaf, Probyn Gregory, Nelson Bragg, Scott Bennett, Alan Boyd, Stevie Kalinich, Al Gomes, John Cowsill… plus many more band members, family and friends. With surprises during the day!I rather think I'll be the only BBT member to attend. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

I hope they'll both be around long enough to sign my copy of That Lucky Old Sun.

Now I wish I had been at the Kenwood House concert. Sounds like it was a special show.
